Oppose the Standardized Dress Code

Target:
Huntsville parents and students
When the Standardized Dress Code was proposed, HISD sent out 2000 surveys to parents. The majority was "strongly opposed" even when HISD was considering including blue jeans in the dress code. During meetings 100's of parents made their voices against the dress code heard, but it apparently fell on deaf ears. We only slightly relented when told that blue jeans would be included. Then the school board that we elected to represent the people of our great town went behind closed doors and voted for the Standardized Dress Code anyway. We must fight for our children and our way of life! We are not a metropolitin area riddled with crime nor are we a private school to mandate such a strict dress code. We are a proud and hard working rural community in which blue jeans are a staple of our culture. Pay attention to our children's pleas, jeans are the biggest issue, but not the only. They also want to take away acheivements that our children worked so hard for like the FFA/4-H jackets that the kids worked so hard to earn, the belt buckles kids win from putting so much effort, time, and money into raising an animal for fair, cubscout shirts, even the Huntsville Hornet shirts that they take so much pride in wearing. Independant studies have been done and contridicts what the HISD appointed committee has said. There are a lot of issues at hand! Sign this petition in protest against the Standardized dress code. The people who are supposed to represent us may finally listen: Mr. MontgomeryGlenn Green (or the person that elected in his place), Jimmy Langley, David Baker, David Stanlee, and Riley TilleyPatrick Antwi abstained but will hopefully vote for the majority if board will reconsider.

Yes I agree that we were really not ask to vote on this issue or I know that I was not. This is something that we all should have been involved in.Some of the clothing the girls were wearing actually showed a little more than I would let my daughters wear but that is no reason to punish all students. Talk to parents of the children and try to work a workable solution. These kids are here to learn ,not be punished for clothing not being appropriate. Please change this code they now have for a more reasonable solution.

They need to enforce what they already had if that had been done this would not have even been a problem, I am also opposed to the belts because if they wore the right size pants belts would not be an issue, this standardized dress code. It is very unfair to the thin or heavy person, only the "prefect" weighted person would look good in this dress code...try to be fair to all. The board is saying that enrollment is down and it will continue to go down especially with this code and parents being told if you don't like it go elsewhere.

I go to Huntsville High. Yes, there are problems, but this aweful dress code is not going to change it. The gangs will just wear a solid color shirt that is their "color". All you're doing is camoflauging crimininals! If some kid I don't know comes up and punches me in the back and all I see is a guy with brown hair, a blue polo shirt, and kaki pants- that's going to describe every other white male in our school! Alot of my friends are saying they will quit school b/c of it, yeah you're really solving problems that way!

One main reason HISD is attempting to change this dress code is to help eliminate competition and rivalry between students but this will not help the issue. Kids will find a way to compete with and outtrank each other no matter what you do, so why take away their freedom to dress themselves? What are we teacing children when we tell them they have to look like everyone else? We are telling them that individuality is a bad thing. Secondly, this "better" dress code is trying to be put into action to reduce the chance of weapons being brought into the schools but if you really compare the uniform clothes to the kids' everyday clothes it's just as easy to hide weapons in, if not easier. Another issue I have with the dress code being changed is the challenge this presents to the parents having to buy these clothes. Many families cannot afford to buy three or four sets of clothes especially if they have several children. Instead of putting so much effort into changing the dress code and mandating uniforms put those efforts into enforcing the dress code you already have in place. Enforcing the current dress code will allow students to express independence and won't force some parent into debt trying to buy clothes that their children will never wear outside school.

I have taught for 13 years in both MS, HS, & even collegic level. I have experience with dress code issues & safety needed for our children. Refusing to allow them to wear jeans will NOT solve the problem. Actually most public school who have gone to required dress find they have just as many issues as they did prior. I understand the spirit behind this is so that all students are equal (you can't tell who does or does not have money if all dress the same AND it's very easy to spot a student who does not belong on the campus). However, when you take a vote from your community and they do NOT support this and you do anyways? Does that NOT cause major ethical issues? Do you honestly think your parenst are going to support the adminstration in enforcing this? My question is why not simply ENFORCE the dress code you currently have?!? If you will just enforce what is SUPPOSED to already be in place you should not have any issues. I have NEVER seen any major violations when I have been able to visit my children at their school. WHY not do what other area districts do? If kids out of dress code = ISS until parents bring them a change of clothes & here in CISD that meena they will be in IIS until 4:3o when ASD gets out if the parents don't do so. Believe me it works, I've had 2 dress code violations all year in my class & both time parenst brought up change of clothes by 2nd period. My children WILL be wearing jeans to school, I can't afford on teachers salary to keep replacing kakhi pants that get ruined easily with stains & tears. They will continue to dress with in dress code as they have always done so. Please be forewarned REFUSING to listen to what your community needs is leaving yourself open for all kinds of legal & politcial problems. It doesn't take but a few upset & determined parents to make change happen. I am in this profession, I have seen & understand why you were thinking of doing this but COME ON we are rural & not down town Houston where we have to worry about gang affliation via colors, etc.... That's why some many of us live in Huntsville because it's a small town & better for our kids. PLEASE LISTEN to your COMMUNITY and NOT what a few people believe it should be. Imagine what would happen shoudl you need to pass a bond issue to raise funds for school remodeling. Do you think the community is going to back you, when you won't even listen to them? For example I NEVER receievd a survey via mail or email about this issue to start with! Is that NOT illegal? I have 2 children in HISD, I shoudl have recieved 2 vites. I pay enough in taxes & my vioce should be heard too.

We have been in Huntsville for 10 years. We moved from Houston where our children attended a private school. When our eldest daughter entered the junior high grades, the school board decided to impose a uniform on all the students from preK through 12. They saw it as a way to "fix" the dress code problems they were having with the students, in much the same way that the Huntsville school board does. Let me tell you -- it did not entirely fix the problems. The girls still bought shirts that were too small, thus exposing their mid-drift. The boys still bought pants that were too big and wouldn't wear a belt, thus exposing their underwear. Foturnately, the school kept a bunch of belts on hand that the boys would be given for the day to keep their pants up. A charge was placed on their school bill for the use of the belt. If the belt was not returned, another charged appeared on their school bill for having bought the belt. WHY NOT ENFORCE WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE!!!!!!!!! From what I have seen around the high school campus and the Mance Park campus, there are only a few dozen students who refuse to abide by the dress code. Granted, I don't see all the kids, but most of the kids I do see are abiding by the dress code. Have a form of punishment for those who do not abide by the dress code instead of continually changing it. If you do not enforce the dress code, even this new dress code will not work!!!!

I have four children in HISD and cannot afford to get these kind of cloths that my kids nor I even like! You lied to us about the jeans and it feels like you stabbed your community in the back. We elected you to represent us, not force unwanted policies on us and our children.
