Orlando Health Diversity Initiative

Target:
Orlando Health
Sponsored by:
Several months ago a group of Orlando Health team members presented a proposal to key executive leaders of the organization calling for the development of a diversity initiative to benefit the organization, its team members, physicians and patients and the community at large. After several meetings with key leaders within the organization nothing has happened.

There are several disparities and inconsistencies within Orlando Health's team member and patient policies in regard to diversity/multicultural awareness.

Some examples include:

-Orlando Health does not allow team members to form groups to discuss diversity/multicultural awareness.

-Orlando Health does not educate its team members about the culturally competent way to treat its patients and team members in regard to important racial and ethnic differences.

-Orlando Health protects a team member's sexual orientation in its team member nondiscrimination policy, but does not do so in its patient's bill of rights.

-Orlando Health does not protect the gender identity of its team members or patients.

-Orlando Health does not provide domestic partner health benefits for its team members, regardless of sexual orientation.

-Orlando Health's mission is "to improve the health and quality of life of the individuals and communities we serve." Due to the above and the unknown number of opportunities for recruitment and advancement the organization has not yet explored, Orlando Health is behind other business leaders.

As the fifth largest employer in Central Florida, it is time Orlando Health lead like Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, SeaWorld Orlando and several other top employers in the market and develop a diversity/multicultural awareness initiative that will ultimately lead to the organization establishing a diversity/multicultural office to better achieve its mission.

Please join me in signing this petition to tell Orlando Health it is time to embrace positive change.

Sincerely,

Alan L. Bounville

We the undersigned encourage Orlando Health to develop a diversity/multicultural awareness initiative that will ultimately lead to the organization establishing a diversity/multicultural office to benefit the organization, its team members, physicians and patients and the greater community.

Orlando Health is the fifth largest employer in Central Florida and is responsible for the health care of thousands of patients each year. There are several inconsistencies within Orlando Health's team member and patient policies in regard to diversity/multicultural awareness. It is time Orlando Health join other community leaders like Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, SeaWorld Orlando and several others and become more culturally competent to better fulfill its mission "to improve the health and quality of life for the individuals and communities we serve."

Thank you Orlando Health for hearing our concern. We look forward to positive change in this area in the very near future.

Any organization truly committed to the care of human beings MUST do so in a way that is sensitive to the needs of all whom they serve. It's time to be a leader, Orlando Health, not just in the care and protection of your patients' and employees' health, but in their individual rights and liberties as well.

Hatred is not a family value!! Human rights are not something you vote on!! What really hits home with me, and especially in my "situation" being ill, is that apparently it is according to many religions "ethical" to deny same sex couples the same rights that others take for granted, the same rights that would allow me to be covered by my partners medical insurance, life insurance, pension when we grow old or God forbid ... See Moreone of us dies. If something were to happen to one of us the other "legally" could not make funeral arrangements, or technically be allowed to see the other in the hospital. When it effects everyday life it is a HUGE deal. And what really hits home is when you live in a neighborhood where a large number of neighbors during our last election actually had signs out in their front yards saying to "vote no" for these same rights that the majority of people are afforded. It is very sad to be driving into my home and see these signs advocating putting my human rights up to popular vote. What if the tables were turned and the populous was able to put up to vote which religion everyone had to be? It was not to long ago that some people were not allowed to sit in the front of a bus or drink from the same water fountain or eat at the same restaurant. Huge strides had been made to correct these wrongs; however, in America at least it is still socially acceptable and fully legal to discriminate against same sex couples and gay people. If people could only walk a mile in someone else shoes, its easy to think its ok when it does not effect that person directly. Unfortunately there are hundreds of thousands of people that these injustices effect every minute of every day.

This state and area needs business leaders to bring social concerns like civil rights into an appropriate 21st. century perspective, please sieze this opportunity to do so.

An organization such as this which employs and serves our diverse community should have policies and procedures that reflect and honor that diversity. Health organizations should be leading the way in this regard, especially in the provision of health benefits to all employees and their families, both traditional and non-traditional ones. Health Care is about human intervention not merely about medical attention. Health is about us as a society healing our wounds, taking care of the weakest among us as we all will be weak at some stage, and about honoring and respecting all life and all of our lives. Let go of outdated mentality! Lets move forward! move with the times! Advance, grow, thrive!

It took me over 10 years to get access to my partner's health benefits. During that time we spent an additional $100,000 on health insurance. It was unfair and a hardship.

This initiative is not an issue of gay rights or even minority rights, but an issue of human rights. All human beings deserve to be treated equally in the work place. Just 41 years ago, interracial marriage was considered taboo and was illegal in most states. My parents suffered these same kind of human rights violations then and people now look back that era with disgust. Now, its illegal for me to marry my partner in this state and most states and I am subject to the same inequalities. When people look back on this era of history with disgust, Orlando Health will be a part of that sordid history unless they change their policies.
