Parking Garage at TTU

Target:
Tennessee Tech University
Sponsored by:
Parking at TTU            Parking at TTU could become much easier by simply building a parking garage. As seen below, a 145,00 square foot, 5 story garage can be built for a little over 5 million dollars. With a tuition raise of only $20 a year at our current enrollment of 10,800 students, this building could be paid off in less than 30 years. I can%u2019t speak for other students but I would be glad to pay $10 more a semester to get a garage similar to this. I realize I would never reap the benefits, as I will hopefully be gone before it would be completed, but I believe it would greatly benefit the university. If you agree, I urge you to sign this petition and pass it along.Kelly Laycockkhlaycock21@tntech.edu   Construction Cost Estimate for a Parking Garage

RSMeans Quick Cost Estimates

The following analysis estimates the cost to build a parking garage with reinforced concrete / r/conc. frame using US National Average costs from 2008 RSMeans cost data. Costs are derived from a building model that assumes basic components, using open shop labor for a 145000 square foot building.

Scope differences and market conditions can cause costs to vary significantly. To see an estimate of the costs to build a parking garage in a specific city or metropolitan area, go to our index of parking garage models by state.

NOTE: This cost estimate uses 2008 RSMeans data. A more accurate estimate using current RSMeans cost data is available on Means CostWorks - our online cost estimating tool.

I agree with this petition. There are far more communting students than resident students. And the students in residence have a tendency to park in the communter lot taking valuable parking spaces.

I plan on being a student at TTU hopefully until I finish graduate school and parking right now is a hassle. Hopefully, by building a parking garage it will allow for better usage of available space and allow for more students to enroll via on campus living or commuter. I highly support the idea of a parking garage on campus!!!!

With the current explosion of growth that Tennessee Tech has been experiencing over the few years, it is imperative that we begin developing a better parking situation for students on campus. This will help alleiviate stress on the hospital and local business parking lots as well. If the school looked into doing an underground parking garage as well, this would give us ample parking space without detracting from the look of the campus.

Parking is absolutely ridiculous on campus. I leave ATLEAST 30 minutes early to find a parking spot before my classes. They really need to accomodate for every single person who attends Tech because eventually no one is going to want to go to school there due to the parking issue.

I agree with Kelly. Parking is ridiculous on campus. I live less than 2 minutes away but I have to leave my house almost half an hour early just to find a parking place in the back of the parking lot! This garage would make the campus safer, by reducing some of the chaotic traffic on campus.

There is obviously not enough parking spots. It is unfair to punish students with tickets when there is no where else to park. The parking lots are also hazardous because people drive crazy to get to a spot first.
# 22:

I really believe the school needs to do SOMETHING about parking. There isn't enough spots to allow the students who have 8:00 classes to get a parking spot, let alone the ones who come in at say 11:00. I personally spent at least 30 minutes one day searching for a spot. The parking situation could be viewed as a danger to students because of all the cars zooming around following students to their cars and trying to be the first one to an open spot.

We obviously need more parking since Tech police have nothing better to do than drive around and give pointless parking tickets. If they don't have a reason to give tickets maybe they can do something a bit more productive.

Parking is ridiculous. I get a ticket every time I turn around. Tennessee Tech Police is the worst organization on campus.

We need this badly. Parking is insane plus if we had enough spots we wouldnt need to pay a bunch of parking cops because there would be enough spaces.

I am a commuting student from McMinnville, which is an hour from campus. Parking at TTU is a nightmare. I agree with A. Watts. This person has perfectly summarized my feelings on the issue in his/her statements.

Currently, in the commuter lot across from Pennebaker hall, nearly a fourth of the available parking spots are taken up regularly by residents as overflow parking from the dorm lot nearby. The university is only going to continue to grow, and installing small gravel lots just isn't accommodating that growth. The installation of a multi-level parking garage somewhere on campus would better manage a designated parking area by creating additional spaces vertically, instead of the current movement towards paving or gravelling all of the green spaces on campus.
