Pelosi shuts down resolution honoring Michael Jackson

Target:
UNITED STATES CONGRESS
Sponsored by:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi shut the door on a resolution honoring Michael Jackson because debate on the symbolic measure could raise "contrary views" about the pop star's life.
Lawmakers are free to use House speeches "to express their sympathy or their praise any time that they wish," said Pelosi, D-Calif. "I don't think it's necessary for us to have a resolution."
A resolution sponsored by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, cites some of the singer's charitable acts and proclaims him an American legend, musical icon and world humanitarian.
Even before Pelosi's comments, some Democrats said privately they did not support the resolution and a divisive debate would hurt House efforts to muster the votes for priorities such as health care and climate change.
Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., who posted a video on YouTube calling Michael Jackson a "pervert" and a "pedophile," has pledged to do all he could to block the resolution.
Michael Jackson was acquitted in 2005 of charges that he molested a 13-year-old boy. Those allegations, and his admission that children slept in his bed at his home but nothing sexual occurred, have led some members of Congress to put distance between themselves and any formal honor for the entertainer.
"A resolution, I think, would open up to contrary views to — that are not necessary at this time to be expressed in association with a resolution whose purpose is quite different," Pelosi said at a Capitol Hill news conference where she discussed various legislative matters.
Unbowed, Jackson Lee said she will seek support from colleagues who thanked her when she introduced the measure June 26, one day after Michael Jackson died. She said honorary resolutions don't often "pass the next day."
"On this floor we elevate people and doing that we have to work to tell your story," she said after a House vote. But she would need support from Democratic leadership for the resolution to advance to the full House from the committee where it is now.
When members of the Congressional Black Caucus held a moment of silence in the House after Jackson died June 25, some lawmakers walked out of the chamber.
Jackson Lee has pledged that the resolution, now before the House Foreign Affairs Committee where she is a member, would come to the full House for debate. Such honorary measures normally move quickly from committee to the full House and pass on a voice vote.
But Jackson Lee's resolution was in trouble early. It drew only one co-sponsor, Rep. Diane Watson, D-Calif., and was not endorsed by other black caucus members.
From the stage at Jackson's memorial Tuesday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Jackson Lee hoisted a framed copy of the resolution.

Honourable members, I am deeply disappointed to hear that this resolution is being blocked by fellow representatives on the basis of media fodder... Like other posts here have mentioned, as lawmakers, you, of all people in the country, should respect and honour the decisions of the Court and the People: after 5 months of trial, Michael Jackson was cleared of ALL charges and released! If you do not respect the justice system, then what is the point of it? Perhaps you need to pass a resolution to alter the justice system and bring back a system where the people in power decide someone's guilt or innocence - i.e, a dictatorship! For that is what you are doing! Shame on you! You call the country "Land of the Free", you claim you are a Democracy, and you desire the world to follow your example... What example are you showing in this case? That the media, especially the Tabloid media, is the true power?! That people will be judged and convicted by such money-grabbing vultures? Where is the justice in that?! Like another poster stated, ONE lie - PROVEN to be a lie - nothing more than an attempt at EXTORTION - is going to sink an entire lifetime of unmeasureable goodness?! Again, shameful! You wouldn't want the public at large to believe lies about you - make an entire judgement of your character based on tabloid sensationalism and false claims by one or two malicious individuals, would you? Again, HE WAS CLEARED OF ALL CHARGES!! How can you allow the media to have so much more power than the justice system?? How can you do this to someone as caring as Michael? His humanitarian and philanthropist record speaks for itself! Are those facts unimportant?! I guess that is the difference between Michael Jackson and many others: he put himself in others' shoes, and lived life based on this fundamental Christian principle - do unto others as you would have done to you. Sadly, America has lost its direction, and though it claims to be a Christian state, placing even the words, "In God We Trust" on the currency, it seems these are mere words.. old relics from a more moral era... Please, don't judge him based on the evil intents of a handful of money-grabbing opportunists. Judge him on what he has done for the world. Be honourable representatives of the People: Do your homework! There will be no controversy: stand behind your justice system and the facts! You will see, after you do, that no other American deserves this honour more than Michael Joseph Jackson ! All honour and glory to Michael - a man with an angel's heart. Honoring Mr. Michael Jackson and giving him the resolution which he deserves would show that the USA has learned from its history and accepting the work and humanitarian efforts of Mr. Michael Jackson as well as his meaning to the positive changes for integration and designing the USA like we can see it today. For example accepting all races and nationalities and giving them the same rights especially within its own borders! Mr. Michael Jackson was cleared of all charges by law and I think that especially politicians have to respect the law and its verdict. Mr. Michael Jackson might have been different from many of us but that made him very special and a loving and caring man. He showed and opened his heart to the world and he understood that giving is the most important thing you can do when you want to change something. He gave a lot to charity without making it public. Mr. Michael Jackson deserves the resolution and denying it would just show that especially some politicians do not accept their own law and just like splashing out lies in order to get attention and voters. This behavior is just disgusting and I do not think that these people themselves have ever done real charity from their bottom of their heart. (Well, they can proof the opposite if they can!) Mr Michael Jackson has done a lot for the world by sending out his messages via music and his humanitarian work. Just accept this fact and only facts and no lies!

To Whom it may concern in congress...Remember we are the ones who put you in office, voted for you so it is time to earn your pay...We want Resolution 600 passed unilaterally because come election time it would be just as easy to vote you OUT... Michael Jackson is a true humanitarian. Can any of you say the same? He donated constantly to 32 different charities and provided beds and medical supplies to hospitals globally as well as raising help for 9/11 victims (Remember them? Terror on our own soil?)Yes, it was Michael Jackson who held a fundraiser of his celebrity friends to help the families and survivors. Yes it was Michael Jackson who again stepped up to the plate and help Katrina victims. Did any of you? Did any of you do it because it was the right thing to do or use it as a political stepping stone? We all believe it was for political gain, and by you treating Michael Jackson as you are confirms our beliefs. It is time to put up or shut up..Be the people you claim to be and do the right thing by honoring Michael Jackson for the Humanitarian he is and was.

After all those lies and hate and humiliation Michael still stood strong, was forgiving, kept his faith and never gave up believing in the good of mankind. He was one of the most amazing man that has ever walked on this earth. How blessed we should feel to have known him! This world is so blind! God speaks: "You will be hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. For this people´s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them." Mt, 13,14+15 Michael was a gift straight from heaven. We will never be able to thank Michael enough and to honour him enough!

Michael Jackson, whom the world likes to call an icon, was cleared of all charges, because he had been innocent from the very beginning. Michael should be remembered with honor and warmth, because his greatness reflects itself not only in his wonderful and inspiring musical talent, but also in his selfless humanitarian work and his efforts to change the world. He was a wonderful human being we all should aspire to become.

After everything that this man has done for the world, after everything that he's given to us, after all the love he's shown us, ONE rumor, ONE headline, ONE lie, and half the world hates him. It scares me and makes me very upset to think about the idea that Michael will not be honored in the way that he deserves to be honored. He was AQUITTED of all charges, controversy or not, and he was, is, and will ALWAYS BE INNOCENT!!!! I love you Michael

Michael deserves this recognition. People need to remember that Michael was acquitted of all charges. Michael was much more then a gifted entertainer. He cared about this world and tried to make things better. His charitable contributions are many; so many that his record of contributions landed in the Guinness Book of World Records. I wish people would just check their preconceived opinions and egos at the door and really research the good that Michael did for the entertainment industry and for humanity. Please reconsider this. Thank you.

He deserves more than we could ever give him, this would be wonderful. But what I think he needed the most was a life without judgement. What he wanted was a world without hate, and I believe we can give him that if we are up for it. We should make a day dedicated to him, where we all do something to help make the world a better place. :)

Michael Jackson should be recognized for his tremendous accomplishments. He's the best selling artist of all time. But more importantly, he's the most charitable artist to this day. He always put others before himself. This man is undoubtedly is an american icon/legend...He deserves it!

After reading all the information supplied to you in this petition those of you that receive it should be proud of this one of a kind caring human being. He was innocent of those disgusting allegations and also deserved a public apology( that never happened ) for the treatment he recieved. you should be honored... You should be so very proud that you had someone like Michael who thought and cared about others....how many of you in high places would be willing to have everyday people in your home and be willing to help finance all the charities Michael did out of your OWN pocket and ask for nothing in return......NONE! give this to Michael

More importantly that Michael's fame was his humantarian's efforts that span his entire life and all of the time, effort, and money he so unselfishly gave to others in need. He should be honored as he gave unconditionally from his heart, not expecting anything in the world in return -- like Michael said in the "This is It" movie -- it's all about LOVE....L-O-V-E. It seems to me that Michael Jackson just wanted TO love unconditionally and BE loved unconditionally! We need to honor Michael Jackson and depict the right message to everyone that it is good to give and send the message of love around the world! Listen to his songs....that is all he wanted is no suffering, peace, and LOVE....L-O-V-E!!!

I think Michael Jackson deserves this resolution. He has done so much in the world for so many people. He was acquitted on all of the charges he faced. He hasn't done anything to anybody and when the truth comes out it will prove that people in the world who believed in what the media said about Michael will see that they are wrong, stupid, ignorant, and evil people who would have rather believed in magazines and television. Congress is disgusting and i am so glad that i am not born in the US because if i was i think i would have thought like a lot of Americans who treated Michael bad during his trials. The US was not fair to him and treated him like dirt after everything he has done for everybody. This is the way how Congress treats a Legend, a humanitarian, an amazing and kind human being who only tried to help the world. Wow this world is truly messed up and so many of the people in it are disgustingly ignorant and evil. I truly hope from the bottom of my heart that every single one of the people that treated him like badly when he was alive to when he died have eternal pain and suffering.

Michael was a genius and was progressive in his art and in his humanitarian work. As such he existed in our imagination as much as in everyday live. He challenged us to confront prejudice and to love to the edge of our emotional and spiritual comfort. As he was also very human he held dichotomy and evoked fear and prejudice in others by the very nature of this progressive journey. Others who similarly exist in this way, challenge us to move out of our comfortable lives to confront social inequity whether it is based on colour, economy or ideology. Let us be each take a brave stand, venture into the unknown and dare to celebrate the life of a good and decent man.

Michael Jackson gave more of himself than a lot of people in this world, he gave so much and he was hurt, he was made fun of and ridiculed, just like Jesus Christ came to this world and gave his all and was then later crucified by this human race, full of evil, sin and envy. He showed us how to love and heal the world he taught us that we need to be like children full of innocence and love for all, never judging for that is only God's duty to do. He will forever live in our hearts and we will cherish his legacy till we meet again in Heaven.

Why are people so afraid to hnour and praise a person who gave so much to the world. Do the words "ACQUITTED ON ALL COUNTS" not mean anything to some people? If they don't then what does that say for your justice system in general? The Peter King's and Martin Bashir's of this world need to stop trying to make a name for themselves and understand that the common man/woman is in the majority and we know what we want. For Michael to be properly honoured.

Michael Jackson was and was found innocent in a court of law, and America still spit all over him. Meanwhile the vast majority of sex offenders are never brought to any kind of justice for their crimes. This resolution is the least we should do.

Micheal was one of a kind, he brought hope and love into the lifes of various children. Unfortunately he was criticised by people for sharing his bed to his visitors. What more can a man do then share his own bed to someone else less fortunate then himself? He brought a new hope into people lifes something that has been missing for some time.

Speaker Pelosi... MICHAEL JOSEPH JACKSON was declared INNOCENT!! INNOCENT, in a court of LAW. Doesn't that stand for something?? You cannot sit there and judge him based on hearsay from the "media" who in my opinion doesn't stand for squat anymore. Please, you cannot deny based on his record of true humanitarianism that Michael was indeed an extraordinary Man who used his popularity to its fullest potential! He CARED about this WORLD. He CARED about the well being of EVERYONE in it! He was a rare and gifted individual. Someone with a heart of GOLD. You cannot deny that, No ONE on Capitol Hill or even the WHITE HOUSE can deny that! I know you can plainly see that He gave from his heart, and he belived in his heart that we, as ONE could change our fate. It is a beautiful dream, and one that should never be shunned or forgotten. Michael deserves this. And from my heart I ask that he be honored. Thank you.

I think Michael Jackson should and deserves be honored in our country (USA). After all he set a very good example and a world's record for giving to the poor, needy, and the very ill children dying different diseases, which is more than I can say for you rich people that take money out of us every year. Speaker Peloshi, now we Michael Jackson fans will raise controversy until you pass this "resolution" in honoring Michael Jackson and a lot more petitions in other areas that were against Michael Jackson
