People For The Use Of Methadone

Target:
HARMD
Sponsored by:
This petition is in direct response to the members of an organization called HARMD who are trying to eliminate take home doses of methadone.  Methadone is a wonder drug which has saved my life and the lives of thousands of other people as well.  It has given so many the power to take their lives back from opiate addiction.  This petition is for the responsible individuals who are on MMT that appreciate the hard earned take home dose and do not want to lose them because someone else thinks we should.  This petition is for everyone on MMT.  We are being accused of selling our take home doses and killing people on the roadways because most of us are supposedly high on a combination of methadone and benzodiazopines when we leave the clinic.  Let your voice be heard and sign this petition.  Tell everyone about the benefits of Methadone Maintenance Therapy and what it has done for you.  Join the fight against those who would persecute us for being recovering addicts.  Yes, we are drug addicts, but we are also human beings!

The clinics in my area give the patients a supervised urine drug screen once weekly. If you fail the test for benzo's (xanax, valium, klonopin) twice you are detoxed and forced to leave treatment. After three months of being illicit drug free (as verified by weekly drug screens), and attending all counseling sessions you earn one take home. At most you can earn three takes homes during the first year of treatment by passing ALL drug screens. Take home doses are EARNED. And are taken away after an infraction. They are an incentive for the patients to attend counseling and pass their drug screens. In my area of the state there is only two methadone clinics. They are located 45 minutes apart. A lot of people at my clinic drive over an hour a day before work to get treatment. Several even come from out of state. To require these people who have earned their take homes to begin driving that long distance every day is awful. If I had to make daily trips to the clinic again I would lose my job. Im an underground coal miner who has to start the 30 minute trip underground at 7am. Sometimes 6am. The clinic opens at 6am and is located over 40 minutes from the mines. The increased fuel expense alone would be outrageous. I have passed my urine drug screens and earned my take homes! My employer is unaware that I attend treatment. If I were to be punished and have my take homes revoked because someone at HARMD wants to persecute MMT patients I would have to inform my employer, violating my privacy. Which would result in me loosing my job because I would not be able to dose and get to work on time. If I got to work by 7a, it would takes 30 minutes for the mantrip to make it back outside and 30 more to get me underground. I would lose 2 hours of work a day. If the company were nice enough to keep me employed part-time I would lose my insurance and my equipment operating job. Do you see the hassle this would cause in my life? I may even be forced to leave MMT to keep my good paying job. Which WOULD result in me returning to illicit use.

Methadone has SAVED MY LIFE!!! I would not be signing this petition if it were not for this wondrous drug. Methadone is the most studied,(over 40 years!) highly regulated drug in existence today. I am also a diabetic. Would you make me go to a clinic to get my life saving insulin every day? I use needles to INJECT my insulin? Insulin can also kill. ONLY if it is abused! Abuse of Methadone is the problem, NOT Methadone itself!!! BTW, Alcohol KILLS more people every year than ALL ILLICIT DRUGS COMBINED! Lets get rid of alcohol before we get rid of Methadone. It makes more sense.

Methadone has saved my life. It has gotten me off of drugs and has made it so I no longer have to commit crimes in order to get enough money to supply my habit. I am now a funtioning member of society.

Methadone allows me to work and travel for my job. If take homes were not allowed I would be unable to work at my job and I would lose the ability to pay bills and send my 2 daughters to college. This would be helpful to me HOW? No Job ! No Home! No Education ! I don't understand how this would be good for anyone. People need to stop trying to manage the lives of others by passing rules and regulations to do so. My life has recently changed to a point that I was at when I started to use, and now I have regained that life and have slowly moved beyond that point. I honestly never dared to believe that I could have all those things back that I threw away. Now by taking methadone once a day and being allowed the take homes to travel for my job I am not restricted to only work that I can find daily in my community. Thanks for this forum to speak. Don't mess with my life

I never had problems with drugs or alcohol it is my fiancee. She is on a methadone program and doing so well that she only has to go twice a month. She holds down a job, she is trustworthy, and has regained her self respect back. I just see how well she is doing on the program and I stand behind her.

well, what can i say.... Methadone Maintenance has saved my life, just like the tens of thousands of other people out there whose life it has saved. The benefits of methadone greatly outweigh the negatives, plain and simple. If people only opened their minds enough to realize that methadone has saved far more lives than it has claimed... and even those people who overdose almost always have several other substances in their systems... "Methadone Works"!! if not for MMT, I would likely be in jail or dead, period.

MMT has saved the life of my grandson. My daughter was pregnant and an active opiate addict. Withdrawal from an opiate carries a high risk for baby to die. I learned this through all of my research. I was once very against methadone, but have done a 180 in my thinking. I am a nurse and have worked in a drug rehab. So, as you can see that I was very against it. Drug rehabs do not condone methadone for opiate addiction. However, I have done further research and they are VERY WRONG! I am so glad that I have been educated further on methadone. MY grandson is a beautiful healthy baby. Thanks to MMT. If I had forced my daughter to go into a rehab, there's a good chance that he would have died. MMT is actually helping people to live productive lives. They are not high from it, but actually are able to hold a job. Sure, there a few who may abuse it, but I believe the benefits of helping many others outweighs those. MMT should be available for those who want to get serious about recovery.

I have been on methadone for four months. I have not used any drugs, I am happy the way the methadone takes my cravings away, I have passed all my drug screens so I now can have my takeouts and I deserve them, I worked hard to stay clean and work my program honestly and committed to use the program as it should be.Methadone is no joke it has helped people who want help we should not be punished for the mistakes of others who take advantage of the program. So please dont take this away from us who need it and are willing to change our lives for the better.

MMT has saved my life my husbands life and hundrerds of people we know-lives. We have been on it for over 35 years. It has kept us out of jail and helped us lead a normal life/ have children/ own a home and everything else that is associated with being a non-addict. THE PEOPLE WHO ARE DYING FROM IT IS DUE TO THE INSURANCE COMPANIES NOT WILLING TO PAY FOR THE HIGHER PRICED PAIN DRUGS CAUSING DRS.UNEDUCATED ABOUT METHADONES EFFECTS TO PRESCRIBE IT BECAUSE IT IS SO CHEAP. pEOPLE WHO WANT TO GET HIGH ON NARCOTICS WILL ALWAYS FIND A WAY CURRENTLY METHADONE IS TAKING ALL OF THE 'HEAT' PRIOR TO THAT IT WAS OXYCOTIN & PRIOR TO THAT IT WAS FENTYNAL. METHADONE USED CORRECTLY IS `A LIFE SAVER.

Methadone saved my daughter's life and helped her become a functioning member of society again. She worked hard to earn her take home bottles, and needs her daily dose to survive. She works every day and it would be a terrible burden for her to have to go to the clinic on a daily basis. DO NOT punish the people that take methadone as it should be taken, they have worked hard for this privelege!

Methadone has saved my life and helped me to live with FM, CFS and many other pain problems. Please do not take away our rights because we work very hard to get where we are today. I have a life and am able to play with my grandkids. We know there is alot of diversion but not everyone is like that. Its no different than someone with HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, DIABETES, or CANCER ect. We still have to take our medicines or we will hurt or our blood pressure is off or we could go into a coma fom diabetes. Please everyone stand up for your RIGHTS. thank you

I have been on methadone now for over three years and my life is a miracle today. I get take homes which enables me to work and live my life as a woman living in recovery. I had tried several medication free detoxes, rehabs, recovery homes, etc. I followed the 12 step programs as suggested, and still I relapsed. Methadone was the one thing I hadnt really tried. I began MMT over three years ago and my life has improved dramatically. I have my daughter back, I have a decent job, relationships with my family, and I try and help others new to or considering methadone. I work with a website to try and educate not only those on MMT, also health care professionals, family and friends of those on MMT and the public about the TRUTH of methadone.

Iunderstand the peoplle from HARMD had family members die from methadone but I've had friends and family die from NOT taking it. This is a life saving medication when used correctly. What ever happened to personal responsibilty? It is not the medicine fault that they died it was thier own fault for mixing it with benzo's or taking it illegally or lying to the doctor at the d-tox. Accept this and move on!!

MMT has been a godsend to me and I would have lost everything, including my family, if I had not found this wonderful treatment. From the first day of treatment, I have been drug free, completely, and that was 7 years ago. I never would have been able to stay clean for 1 day, let alone 7 years if it weren't for methadone. And it does NOT make you "HIGH"...

I take methadone for pain and it has allowed me to be a wife and mother to my little boy. I was diagnosed with several disorders and autoimmune disease a few years ago which causes me debilitating pain. It wasnt until I got on methadone that my life became truly bearable. I was a mess before methadone. Thanks to METHADONE, I now have a life, can mother my son and be a good wife to my husband and not be in constant pain all the time.

MMT saved my life...it's as simple as that. After losing every material possession I had to addiction, as well as losing my dignity, self respect and the respect of my family, I thought my life was over...or at least, I thought it should be. MMT gave me a second chance to live and to want to be alive again. I have re-built my life and once again enjoy a relationship with my children and loved ones. They love me and respect me once again, and most importantly, they know they can believe in me again. Addiction is a vicious disease with no "cure" that destroys lives and MMT is a major weapon against this disease. How can anyone with a conscience try and take that weapon away from those of us who have worked so hard to re-build and re-establish our lives in spite of this disease? As an addict in recovery, I am not asking anyone to fight my battles...I am only asking that you don't take away one of the major weapons I have to fight this battle on my own. Thank you.

I have been on MMT for 26 months. Before, I was a bad I.V. drug user. I was on the brink of losing everything. My life, my family, people who cared about me. People were fed up with my countless lies and stealing. Where I live, Washington County, Maine, we have a HUGE prescription drug problem. I have worked very hard for my 6 take home doses. For me they mean a lot, but I live 5 miles from my clinic. I know a lot of other people that have to drive literally over a hundred miles round trip just to dose every day. Trying to earn their take homes! If take home dose are stopped a lot of people are not going to be able to make that drive every day. So, some will go back to their drug of choice and the criminal activity in that area WILL rise!! We are NOT getting "high" of this medication. If people would do their research about it, they would understand that. It's a lifesaver for SO many people. Me being one of those people.....

I think if we pass all rules and regulations,we should be allowed are takes homes. The ones who do not follow the rules deserve what they get.If they get caught selling a take home, they should automatically be booted out.End of story. Thanks

My husband and I have been on MMT for over six years now. It has been a blessing. We tried abstinance for about wo years. THis was after almost 20 years of prescripted opiod use. We never felt normal after all of those years of using/abusing opiates. Our brain chemistry had definatly changed. Methadone has 'fixed' what we brok with our addiction. we don't abuse our medication now, we have no desire to. We now can live normal productive lives, just as our sons who are almost 20 years old. They can both tell you that parents on MMT are BETTER than before MMT, and which they would RATHER have and why. They were in their early teens when we started, so they know better than ANYONE the true benefits of what MMT can do for whole family not just the person addicted.

Methadone is a medication sent from Heaven! I got addicted to pain meds after a car accident, and I don't know where (or what) I'd be without methadone. If our takehomes are stopped, I know I would have to go back to street drugs, and I wouldn't want to live! I now have my Family back, a job, and can finally live a normal life, Thanks to Methadone!

I have just earned my weeklie takehomes and it would destroy my family that I was able to build thanks to finally getting on methadone a little over a year ago. It saved my life and I would not be able to make it without it. I pray that these people will stop blaming everyone else for there losses and relize that there are people lives you are ruining because of your actions.

I am a 34 mother of 2 and also a nurse who works in private duty taking care of a trach patient who is also on a ventilator..I couldnt do any of those things and definately not as well as I do them without MMT..I have been a MMT patient for over 3.5yrs now.During this time I have never once taken any sort of benzodiazapam with my methadone or any other narcotics with it..I currently get 2weeks worth of takehome medication(I can get more if I need/want it) and have never once sold so much as a tiny piece off one of the diskets given as my dose.MMT saved my life,my family,my marriage and my carreer..I couldnt/wouldnt be all I am today without it...Ppl need to get real and realize that the media doesnt like to have stories about people like me..The ones who get up,dose, get their kids to school then go to work, come home and go to bed only to start over the next day with the same deal..They dont show this stuff because well its rather boring if I do have to say so myself.Though I wouldnt trade it for all the excitement and drama available anywhere else..They show, write and talk about the ones that are messing up and acting crazy because well its "good" tv or sells newspapers.I personally think people should leave well enough alone and think about the people that would be "HARMD" by doing away with MMT..Lord knows I would probably not survive another bout of active addiction...Thanks..

I, was on methadone for a long time 6 years to be exact. It saved my life and then by getting take outs it made me feel that I was earning something because I was staying clean, do not take this away from people it is an important part of recovery. I am a student and methadone enabled me to change my lifestyle and be a productive citizen. I am now off methadone with the use of buprenorphine, that was a stepping stone in my recovery and I continue to respect how Methadone saves lives and how the importance of take outs save people from number one giving them a freedom, number two treating people with the respect that they deserve, and not having to go to a clinic everyday so they can live there lives, and not be chained to a clinic and our free to travel, work, and become productive members of society. Thank you for listening-

I am an RN who got hooked on painkillers after a back injury. I was on them for about 7 yrs. and tried everything to stop. Many people do not know that after many years of opiate use there is a change in brain chemistry where if you stop taking the opiates,a dibilitating depression and anxiety sets in making it impossible to work or be a productive member of society. Methadone has changed all of that for me. I have been on maintenance for 4 and a half yrs. I do not get "high" on my dose. Methadone dose not cause the euphoria that pain meds do. It just stops the craving, and alliviates the mental depression and anxiety called PAWS (post accute withdrawal syndrome) which can last for many years. I pick up my medication monthly now and if I were to lose this privaledge it would affect my job prospects greatly. Many of us have to travel many miles to get treatment so take home meds are a must if we need to work to survive.

I would look into office based perscription of methadone. This is where most of your divertion comes from. Not clinic methadone. Most people in clinics would not sell the methadone for fear of getting sick. However people who are given methadone for pain by a doctor can sell or give their methadone and take something other for pain.
