PeTA, Thy Name is Hypocrisy

Target:
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
In October PeTA decided to use the face and name of personality Dita von Teese to promote a spay and neuter program.  The hitch?  Von Teese wears fur and will not give it up.  Because PeTA has been rightly a hugely vocal opponent of fur in all its forms, this move to benefit from celebrity at any cost is seen as the final outrage in a long string of sexist, commercial and exploitive moves toward "animal liberation."

We, the undersigned, are tired of the hypocrisy of PeTA.  We animal activists feel as if PeTA, the best-known among the general public for its tactics and frequently offensive behavior (including sexism), has crossed a line that cannot be ignored.  By promoting Dita Von Teese, who refuses to stop wearing fur, PeTA has proclaimed its new status as an animal welfare group, an anti-animal rights group, and a celebrity-oriented organization that seems unable to understand how badly such hypocrisy affects local and grassroots groups.  Many of us have had to endure, during tabling or protests, "Are you with PeTA?" before being heard on important issues like the truth behind circuses or meat production.  Many of us know we will not be listened to because the general public associates us with PeTA.  And we have, in the name of movement unity, and perhaps laziness, stood by and said nothing.
But not this time.  The use of an unapologetic fur-wearer to promote something as basic as spay/neuter is not the act of an animal rights group.  It serves to confuse the public and may be seen as condoning the use and wearing of fur.  Animal rights is a tough enough cause to espouse and fight for without the mixed signals - fur is okay for some people - who just happen to be white celebrities - but not for others, those of us who are "regular" people?
We, the undersigned, do not understand this and ask that PeTA rethink its tactics, that PeTA use the services only of people whose actions are compatible with the ethics of animal rights.  We pledge to send no more money to peta, request no more free literature, or in any other way endorse or publicize or promote PeTA until this blatant hypocrisy is put to rest.
Thank you.

I am removing all PETA information from my web site. I have had some bad feelings lately about who PETA represents and puts on display. PETA is slowly becoming a joke! What a disappointment.

I'm a member of PETA and am not here to attack them (myself). I ask the head of PETA to fire Dita von Teese because she is an insult to animal rights. Anyone who wears fur is either amoral and unconsciously cruel (evil by default) or morally bankrupt--(clinically evil) and intentionally cruel for vanity and greed, therefore a monster. We activists must be 100% for animal rights, all or nothing, no middle ground and only allow celebrity spokespersons to represent us who have ethics and live with integrity. We cannot compromise our values and expect to create change. People will think animal rights are a joke or at the least, the lines will be blurred so there is no clear example of a compassionate lifestyle. We are leaders by example. -Fo'shizzle.

I am so glad people finally noticing the hypocrisy of Peta. What took them so long? Pro-peta's people would rationalize the murder of innocent cats and dog claiming Peta turned me into a vegan. Yes petas video changed me but that excuse does not work no more. Peta supports "happy" meat, murdered healthy animals, exploits women even to the point of using hard core porn star for her pleather add. I am so sick of peta and all the donation going to them is being wasted when it could go to other org that concentrate on veganism, anti-speciesm, and abolition and even direct action. Peta "supports" direct action yet I wonder how many of the animals saved from ALF was murdered by Ingrid ?

I don't get it. I trusted this organisation and have worn their slogans. What is the real truth on this? I never know who to believe. They appear to have done so much for animal welfare but seem to contradict themslves too.

Peta: Why don't you just pack up and go home. Your double standards are harming the cause of animal rights more than helping.
