End Baby Turtle Release Shows in Mexico!

Petition to prohibit the massive capture and release of sea turtle hatchlings at the various Sea Turtle Festivals throughout Mexico.

We support the good intentions of the Sea Turtle Festivals carried out every year along the Mexican coast, in places such as Baja California, Michoacan, Oaxaca & Quintana Roo.  However, we believe that within these events, the unfortunate practice of massive hatchling releases for the benefit of the public is counterproductive to the conservation goals
with regard to these endangered species.  The reasons why we ask that this practice be stopped are the following:

1.       The release of hundreds or thousands of hatchlings implies that these were first captured and stockpiled in the days prior to the event in order to guarantee a plentiful supply of hatchlings to satisfy attendees, who can number in the thousands and whose number grows every year, when priority ought to properly be given to protecting these endangered species. 

2.      Hatchlings are born with energy reserves to begin their journey through the sea.  Keeping them in captivity, even for a few hours, taxes and can even deplete these stores, placing them at an even greater disadvantage before their natural predators.

3.      From a conservation standpoint, the ideal is to intervene in natural process to the least degree possible.  In the case of sea turtle hatchlings this means allowing them to hatch and head to the sea, without obstacles. Protection efforts should be limited to preventing predation and removing artificial obstacles such as lights and trash.

4.      In some of these events, hatchlings are handed out to the general public, while much of the environmental education work with regards to sea turtles involves trying to convince people not to touch them, to leave them alone.  Handing out hatchlings to the general public, to individuals without proper training, to people with hands dirty from soft-drinks and chips, insect repellent and sun-block, is counterproductive and nullifies the educational component of these festivals. 

We acknowledge the educational value these events can have.  And for that very reason, we believe that, these being endangered species, all activities at these festivals should be consistent with their conservation goals.  The capture, stockpiling and subsequent release of hatchlings is counterproductive to these objective, and is therefore an unnecessary and undesirable component of these festivals.

In response to the numerous complaints we have received with regard to the handling of hatchling releases at these festivals, Mexiconservacion and other co-signers call on the federal authorities to prohibit this type of release and establish regulations with regard to sea turtle protection efforts and sea turtle tourism, to determine once and for all what activities are permissible when dealing with these endangered species.

....ask the corresponding regional authorities to monitor the activities at these festivals to avoid the improper practice of hatchling releases particularly those handled by individuals not authorized to work with sea turtles.

....suggest that festival organizers set alternatives to the practice of holding releases for the public, for example, by holding concerts to benefit sea turtle protection efforts.

.....and we ask musicians and artists to support the regional sea turtle festivals, holding concerts and other cultural activities to benefit sea turtle protection efforts to replace the practice of massive sea turtle releases.

Solicitud para evitar la captura y liberación masiva de crías de tortugas marinas como parte de los diversos Festivales de Tortugas Marinas realizados en México.

Apoyamos las buenas intenciones de los festivales de la tortuga marina que se realizan cada año en diversas zonas costeras del país, entre ellas Baja California, Michoacán, Oaxaca y Quintana Roo.  Sin embargo consideramos que dentro de estos eventos, la mala práctica de liberación de de crías a manos del público en general, muchos de ellos turistas, resulta contraproducente al objetivo de conservación de estas especies en peligro de extinción.  Los motivos por los cuales solicitamos se ponga fin a las liberaciones masivas dentro de estos festivales son los siguientes:

1.      La liberación de cientos o miles de crías implica que primero tuvieron que ser capturadas y acaparadas durante días previos al evento para contar con el numero suficiente de crías para garantizar que los asistentes, que se presentan por miles y cada año son mas, puedan liberar de su propia mano una cría cuando lo prioritario debería ser la protección de la especie en peligro de extinción.

2.      Las crías nacen con las reservas energéticas justas para comenzar su travesía por el mar.  Manteniéndolas en cautiverio, aunque sea por unas horas, merma estas reservas, debilitándolas y poniéndolas en desventaja ante sus depredadores naturales.

3.      Desde un punto de vista de conservación, lo ideal es intervenir en los procesos naturales lo menos posible.  En el caso de las crías de tortugas marinas, esto implica permitir que eclosionen de sus nidos y se dirijan al mar sin obstáculos.  La labor de protección debe limitarse a prevenir la depredación y a remover obstáculos artificiales como son las luces y la basura.

4.      En algunos de estos eventos se reparten crías al público en general, cuando gran parte de la labor de educación ambiental con respecto a las tortugas marinas consiste en convencer a la gente de que no toque a las tortugas, que las deje en paz.  Repartir crías al publico en general de mano en mano, a gente sin la capacitación correspondiente, a personas con las manos sucias de refresco, papitas, repelente para insectos, cremas y demás, es contraproducente y hace nula la labor de concientización de estos festivales.

Reconocemos el valor didáctico que estos eventos pueden tener.  Y por lo mismo consideramos que, tratándose de especies en peligro de extinción, todas las actividades de los festivales de tortugas marinas deben ser congruentes con los objetivos de conservación.  La captura, acaparamiento y subsiguiente liberación de crías resulta contraproducente a estos objetivos y es por ello que consideramos esta práctica tan indeseable como innecesaria. 

En respuesta a las numerosas quejas que hemos recibido en torno al manejo de las liberaciones de crías en estos festivales, Mexiconservación, A.C. y los demás firmantes

....hacemos un llamado a las autoridades federales a prohibir este tipo de liberaciones y establecer una Norma Oficial con respecto a las labores de protección de tortugas marinas y el turismo tortuguero, para determinar de una vez las actividades permisibles con respecto a estas especies en peligro de extinción.

....solicitamos a las autoridades regionales correspondientes, vigilen las actividades en estos festivales para evitar la desacertada práctica de liberaciones de crías, particularmente a manos de quienes carecen de permisos para trabajar con tortugas marinas.

....sugerimos a los organizadores de estos festivales buscar alternativas a la práctica de realizar liberaciones, por ejemplo, conciertos a beneficio de las labores de protección de tortugas marinas.

....y pedimos a músicos y artistas a que apoyen los festivales de tortugas marinas, realizando conciertos y actividades culturales a beneficio de las labores de protección de tortugas marinas, buscando sustituir la liberación masiva de crías por este tipo de eventos.

Apoyamos las buenas intenciones de los festivales de la tortuga marina que se realizan cada año en diversas zonas costeras del país, entre ellas Baja California, Michoacán, Oaxaca y Quintana Roo.  Sin embargo consideramos que dentro de estos eventos, la mala práctica de liberación de de crías a manos del público en general, muchos de ellos turistas, resulta contraproducente al objetivo de conservación de estas especies en peligro de extinción.  Los motivos por los cuales solicitamos se ponga fin a las liberaciones masivas dentro de estos festivales son los siguientes:
