City of Lyons, Georgia Animal Shelter

See letter to District Attorney Dennis Sanders for petition specifics.
District Attorney Dennis Sanders,

On January 20, 2011, 77 dogs at they Lyons Georgia Animal Shelter were put to sleep in what is being described by the animal rescue world as a heinous and inhumane act. The  decision to put down 77 dogs in one day appears to have been a last minute, rash decision intended to teach a lesson to those who so fiercely fight to save every single dog's life as possible.

As you can imagine, fingers are pointing in every direction.  Public Works Director Darel Corley stated to a reporter that the shelter was full and the only choice was to kill all the dogs and start over. Clearly, this was a mistake.  All the dogs did not need to be euthanized in such a frenzied act of cruelty.  He also stated this would be the process on a monthly basis.  The local rescue group (SOAPS) had taken a number of dogs to be rescued just days prior to this event and came back to move more dogs to rescue the day after this event took place. Only to find all the dogs were dead.  The shelter knew this rescue group was coming back for more dogs.  This was uncalled for.

Attorney Sanders,  we the undersigned respectfully request an investigation be opened to reveal the truth in this matter.  On your Government website you speak of compassion and what happens when you loose your compassion. Clearly Director Darel Corley has lost his compassion and can no longer function in this capacity. At a minimum, he needs to be replaced.

Please request an investigation into the details, at a minimum of the following:
* Veterinarian License Expired -   we believe the license of Dr. Charles Chris McRae was expired at the time he administered the drugs used to perform these euthanizations.
* Dogs Buried Alive - There appear to be witnesses willing to come forth to advise that some of the dogs that were buried in the mass grave that held these 77 dogs behind the shelter were indeed buried alive.
* Puppies Not Sedated-  Many of the puppies were not sedated prior to be euthanized by method of heart stick. And treatment of all dogs during euthanization process.

These are just  a few of the many concerns that the undersigned would like your office to investigate.  I can put your office in contact with individuals that can give you more information regarding this issue.  My email address is tew16319@gmail.com.

As you can understand the rescue world is heartbroken and grieving over the loss if so many lives.  People from around the world work day and night to try to place dogs that are in danger in these kill shelters in the United States.  Please do not let the lives of these animals, some of which never had the chance to know companionship, go in vain.

You are in the position to reveal the truth of what happened on January 20, 2011 at The Lyons, Georgia Animal Shelter.   And why it had to happen in such a cruel and inhumane way.

We implore you to please expose those that may have broken the law and help relieve the heavy hearts of so many.  An investigation would do so much to calm the fears of those who are so angered and defeated by this event.  Please use your powers as District Attorney for Toombs County, Georgia to put everyone's minds to rest and to let those of us who work so hard to find homes for these dogs have closure and move on with confidence that this will not happen again.

Respectfully yours,
