She lives in a beautiful state, surrounded by nature and wildlife, and yet she chooses to use her status to encourage opening up the Alaskan Wildlife Refuge to drilling, and she promotes hunting. I think one of the most important qualities of character a leader must posses is COMPASSION, i see Mrs Palin's views and actions she has shown to have towards Alaska's wilflife brutal and a real indication of her character. To have a person with no compassion a hearbeat away from being president is scary. It has not been easy to make advances in the animal right movement and its been done by the efforts of very dedicated people. Is not right, is not fair and is not humane to have a VP who could possibly take us back not forward in this important issue.

I support Barack Obama/Joe Biden, and the Humane Society of the US does, too. This is fantastic because historically, the HSUS has *never* endorsed a presidential candidate. So, the fact they are now shows how passionately they support the Democratic presidential ticket, and how much they trust Obama/Biden to support animal rights and welfare in Washington. The Associated Press quoted Obama, "I think how we treat our animals reflects how we treat each other," he said. "And it's very important that we have a president who is mindful of the cruelty that is perpetrated on animals." Oddly enough, Mohandas Gandhi said, "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Now, I do not want to equate Obama with him, but I trust a man who shares the same line of thinking as such a peaceful, humane individual like Gandhi.

Do you trust Sarah Palin to treat animals well? Absolutely not. If Sarah Palin were to be propelled into the presidency and given the opportunity to run the United States like she has run Alaska--controlling the Departments of Interior, Agriculture, and Commerce, with wide-ranging authority over issues affecting pets, wildlife, farm animals, marine mammals, animals in research, and public lands--it would indeed be a terrible day for animals and for the country. She has bragged about killing over 400 caribou. Palin shoots wolves from helicopters using semi-automatic rifles and has authorized such aerial wolf hunts with no kill limits. Palin has even tried to pass legislation making it easier for state officials to gun down wolves and bears from the sky, and even offered a $150 bounty for the left foreleg of each dead wolf as an economic incentive for pilots and aerial gunners to kill more of the animals. A mega hunting avocate, Palin seems to own more horns/pelts/taxidermied animals than C.J. McElroy, the founder of Safari Club International, a world-wide exotic game hunting organization that is responsible for many canned hunts. She is also a close ally of this organization. Palin even wants to lift polar bears from the protected species list so that oil can be harvested all over Alaska. She even wants to dig for oil in the Alaskan Wildlife Reserve. She also supports the Canadian Seal Hunt which has killed 190,000 seals this year alone, most of which were baby harp seals.
