Please Designate 2012 the "International Year of the Ocean"

The last United Nations-designated International Year of the Ocean (YOTO) was in 1998 - the year after internationally-renowned ecologist and "oceanographic technician" Jacques-Yves Cousteau died. In the 15 years since then, it is arguable that the threats to our planet's oceans - from climate change, acidification, overfishing, the extinction of species, pollution & garbage accumulation, and many other dire problems - have never been more urgent than NOW. We need a NEW "International Year of the Ocean" - 2012, the 15th Anniversary of Cousteau's death. But because our oceans are SO vast (covering nearly 75% of the planet's surface) and SO vital to the future of every living plant and animal on Earth, we propose a TWO-YEAR celebration - 2012 to 2013 - when people, students, teachers, schools, scientists, environmental organizations, governments, and countries around the world - and the greatest international minds of our generation and our new century  - can focus on international education, clean-up, and conservation of our planet's oceans and ALL of the living things in it. Because the very survival of the human race and every single species of plant and animal may well depend upon it.

Dear Secretary-General Moon, President Obama, and Under Secretary Dr. Lubchenco:

We the undersigned have a request to make which we hope you%u2019ll find favorable.

Please Designate 2012 the NEW %u201CInternational Year of the Ocean.%u201D

The last United Nations-designated International Year of the Ocean (YOTO) was in 1998 - the year after internationally-renowned ecologist and "oceanographic technician" Jacques-Yves Cousteau died. In the 15 years since then, it is arguable that the threats to our planet's oceans - from climate change, acidification, overfishing, the extinction of species, pollution & garbage accumulation, and many other dire problems - have never been more urgent than NOW. We feel we need a NEW "International Year of the Ocean" - 2012, the 15th Anniversary of Cousteau's death %u2013 to again focus the world%u2019s attention on the dire threats to our planet%u2019s oceans and waterways. But because our oceans are SO vast (covering nearly 75% of the planet's surface), and SO vital to the future of every living plant and animal on Earth, we propose a TWO-YEAR celebration - 2012 to 2013 - when people, students, teachers, schools, scientists, environmental organizations, governments, and countries around the world - and the greatest international minds of our generation and our new century - can come together in a spirit of cooperation to focus on international education, clean-up, and conservation of our planet's oceans and ALL of the living things in it.

Because the very survival of the human race and every single species of plant and animal may well depend upon it.

Thank you all very much for your time and your consideration of this suggestion.

Sincerely,

Jack Colwell
