Please fire David Letterman

Please fire David Letterman

Target:
CBS and David Letterman
Sponsored by:

Please boycott David Letterman show after he said that about Sarah Palin looking like a airplane stewardess slut and talking about her 14 year old daughter Willow Palin being knocked up by Alex Rodriguez. If David Letterman said that about Barack Obama's kids he would get a lot of backlash by celebrities, Today Show, CNN and other networks. What if somebody said that about David Letterman's child would he feel the same way Sarah Palin feels because I heard that he hates talking about his private life.

We the undersigned,

Please fire David Letterman for what he said about Sarah Palin looking like a slut and what he said about her 14 year old daughter Willow about being knocked up by Alex Rodriguez. He went too far with those comments. I know Sarah Palin is a public figure and you can talk about her but don't be mean to her children.

Letterman is rude and offensive. For a host of a comedic late night program he is not funny in the least. His rants are politically motivated. His unrelenting attacks on Sarah Palin are personal and vindictive. Time to introduce him to retirement.

Letterman should be fired. The interns were taken advantage of ! Letterman, the employer, should not have sex with his employees. Just because he is a celebrity, is it okay for him to take advantage of these employees? Even with their consent, it is plain wrong. There is a pattern of abuse. In all probability, some of the interns were and are still intimidated to stand up for their rights. As good human being, we must stand up for these women.

I stopped watching the Letterman show many years ago because he wasn't funny, just crude and crass but not funny. He seems to have gone downhill quite a bit more to a point of being an total embarrassment. CBS should drop him like a hot potato and give his open time slot to that very funny man Graig Furgeson.

Long time fan of David but his attacks on Palin have gone on too long. I can see a hit or two but he seems to be attacking her and using his show to do it. He is funny until he uses his show to attack those he does not like. Its time for him to go or stop using his show to attack people!

Why hasn't Letterman been fired by CBS? Imus was fired for much less. Imus just called some women names. Letterman actually abused these women and their employment relationship. He was their boss for God's sake. Don't the executives at this network have any common decency?

I was the biggest Letterman fan in highschool and college, and then I realized he was a total creep. He berated Mary Cheney on air for being --gasp--a lesbian AND a Republican (how dare she!). Didn't he call Palin a "slutty flight attendant"? Was that before or after he joked about her minor daughter having sex in a dugout with A-Rod? Mr. Midwest Holier than thou is a perv and a biggot (yes, hating on Republicans is still hating).

Dear Mr. Letterman, does your wife realize that you are infatuated with Sarah Palen. People who act and say the things about someone you really don't know or have never really met is really obsessed with that person. You must really feel rejected by her and so you are trying to get back at her because she does not have the same feelings for you as you do her. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!! Everyone is getting a little tired of you and your stupid humor. Are you really that afraid of her? She can't even leave the political areana without you continuing to harress her. I call this stalking, how about you. In my eyes you must really hate women, you couldn't even marry the mother of your son till he practically started school. WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU! GET OVER IT, and get on with your own life and leave her alone. I will never, never never watch your show again, or buy any products that sponsor you and I will tell everyone that I can that they shouldn't either. The best thing would be to retire, before they fire you.

I am truly disgusted with his "joke" and the horrendous way he continued to try to "joke" his way out of it. I am especially disgusted with him trying to say the comment wasn't about the 14 year old daughter but was actually about the 18 year old daughter - as if that made the "joke" more acceptable. I won't watch Letterman. I'm going to wean myself off of CBS as well and I'm going to write down the show's sponsors and discontinue any business I have with them as well. I am fed up with Letterman and his ilk...

I don't know how David Letterman feels he can make the remarks he did. He has a child and didn't feel ready to marry the mother until lately. He has the NY mentality and doesn't know how the rest of the country thinks. As a former Hoosier myself I know he's lost touch with his upbringing. I wouldn't lower myself to watch his show and CBS is also on my list of rejects.

The attacks on Sarah Palin are ludicrous at best. If she were a democrat, this would never have happened. To do this in the name of comedy is outlandish. Her children have been the subject of media attacks since her selection as McCain’s running mate. The media has attacked and portrayed her and her family as slutty and stupid uninformed. The truth is that most of the media is afraid of Sarah Palin. They fear and what she has to say and how she says it. They fear this female who is everything that the woman’s lib movement wants but does not represent their views. They fear a person like Sara Palin will open the eyes of the American people to what is really going on. The intent of David Letterman’s attack was to injure Sarah Palin and her family. This is not done in the as comedy, it was a personal attack. The media would not be accepting this if Sarah Palin were minority, or any other individual (for that matter). The things that concern me as an American by this kind of behavior are when you do not agree with the way things are presented you become a target. This is not freedom; it is slavery to the media and those who run it. I find That David Letterman is a scar to CBS's reputation. Perhaps Benjamin Franklin said it best when he said, “Glass, china, and reputation are easily cracked, and never mended well.” David Letterman has attempted to not only crack, but to shatter Sarah Palin’s reputation. What he (David Letterman) has accomplished is to further crack CBS’s reputation. I will not support David Letterman, CBS, or its advertisers till appropriate action is pursued. I Nathan Kangas ask that you please fire David Letterman.

If Letterman had said these things about Michelle Obama, and her daughters the station would have fired him in a heartbeat. So tell me, what is the difference? It was apauling to all women and what we stand for. He should be fired, and tonight he started on her again. Stop him and make him shut his ugly mouth.

Full Transcript of Letterman’s Apology Posted By Greta Van Susteren On June 15, 2009 @ 10:27 pm In OTR @ 10p ET | 231 Comments We were able to only show you a portion of David Letterman's apology to the Palins on ON THE RECORD, but here is the full transcript below: David Letterman: "All right, here -- I've been thinking about this situation with Governor Palin and her family now for about a week He had to think about it for a week? After there were complaints. -- it was a week ago tonight, and maybe you know about it, maybe you don’t know about it. But there was a joke that I told, and I thought I was telling it about the older daughter Don’t they do research? being at Yankee Stadium. And it was kind of a coarse joke. “Course joke”? That is a rationalization to delude himself and other as to what the “joke” really was defamatory, insulting, offensive, and slanderous. There’s no getting around it, but I never thought it was anybody other than the older daughter, and before the show, I checked to make sure in fact that she is of legal age, 18. Yeah." He fact checked that she was 18 but NOT the daughter at the game. Of course it is OK to insult her since she is 18. "But the joke really, in and of itself, can't be defended. The next day, people are outraged. They're angry at me because they said, 'How could you make a lousy joke like that about the 14-year-old girl who was at the ball game?’ And I had, honestly, no idea that the 14-year-old girl, I had no idea that anybody was at the ball game except the Governor and I was told at the time she was there with Rudy Giuliani ... And I really should have made the joke about Rudy..." (audience applauds) David Letterman is rationalizing his but off. Again he can fact check one thing but not others. How could what David Letterman “joke” could possibly have anything to do with Rudy Giuliani? "But I didn't, and now people are getting angry and they're saying, 'Well, how can you say something like that about a 14-year-old girl, and does that make you feel good to make those horrible jokes about a kid who’s completely innocent, minding her own business,' and, turns out, she was at the ball game. I had no idea she was there. David had NO IDEA then why didn’t he fact check it? Because this is a rationalization to delude himself and his audience. So she’s now at the ball game and people think that I made the joke about her. “So she’s now at the ball game” another rationalization. She, the 14 year old, was always the one at the ball game. And, but still, I'm wondering, 'Well, what can I do to help people understand that I would never make a joke like this?' He would “never make a joke like this.” Yet he did. This is denial about what he actually DID! I've never made jokes like this as long as we've been on the air, 30 long years, and you can't really be doing jokes like that. He continues to rationalize, to delude himself and the audience with his denial of what he in fact did. “You can’t really be doing jokes like that” as if someone else told the joke and not him. This seems to be some dissociative reaction. This is very common with the abusive person. Abusive husbands, etc. And I understand, of course, why people are upset. I would be upset myself." He would be upset but he wasn’t, until the complaints came in. "And then I was watching the Jim Lehrer 'Newshour' -- this commentator, the columnist Mark Shields, was talking about how I had made this indefensible joke about the 14-year-old girl, and I thought, 'Oh, boy, now I'm beginning to understand what the problem is here. Again he defends his “joke” if it were about someone other than a 14 year old. It’s the perception rather than the intent.' “It’s the perception.” Here he is blaming those of use who found it offensive. We were the ones that got it wrong. This is very common with that abusive person. We are being over sensitive, taking it personally, etc. (read “The Secret of Overcoming Verbal Abuse” by Marcia Grad Powers and Albert Ellis, Ph.D.) It doesn't make any difference what my intent was, it's the perception. Again he refuses to take responsibility for what he said and blames others. Something is wrong with them but not him. And, as they say about jokes, if you have to explain the joke, it's not a very good joke. And I'm certainly --" (audience applause) "--thank you. Well, my responsibility – I take full blame for that. I told a bad joke. He claims to take responsibility but only for telling a bad joke. He doesn’t take responsibility for what the joke was about but just that it was a “bad joke.” I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception. In one breath he claims to take responsibility, “I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception.” in the next he blames others for it. He neither takes responsibility for his actions or accountability for his actions. Responsibility is meaningless with out being accountable for your actions. And since it was a joke I told, I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke. It's not your fault that it was misunderstood, it's my fault. That it was misunderstood." (audience applauds) David Letterman continues to rationalize and blames others for HIS actions. "Thank you. So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the Governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke. I'm sorry about it and I'll try to do better in the future. Thank you very much." (audience applause) With all the denial I can not find his “apology” very sincere. Gary AA, MI

I am sick of this miserable person and needs to be fired. A double standard in this country!! He is NOT funny. Filthy mind, filthy mouth. I find all this appalling that he is not gone as was Imus,Senator Packwood. Please get this no-talent idiot off of National TV. His remarks were so much worse than Don Imus and look what happened to him. I for one will not buy a single product that sponsors his show. I have already boycotted ABC because of the idiotic anchor Peter Jennings and have not watched ABC since 9-11-2001. I now have added a boycott to CBS. I keep thinking about my 5 granddaughters and shutter to think of what I would be forced to do to that idiot David Letterman if he said any of these same things about any of my girls. This jerk needs the same treatment that was given to Imus. This insult was so much worse. He needs to be accountable for it so that it doesn't keep happening. Maybe Letterman should start insulting himself since he is now in the trend for insulting people and getting away with it.

It is not surprising that Letterman would stoop so low to make a joke that was poorly worded by the staff of paid writers that are only looking to boost the ratings for the television show. Letterman instead of going as planned with the teleprompter as it showed the monologue he should have stopped the show and say that he would not go with the joke and say that the statement has crossed the line for any comedian. It would be as if someone had made a statement about Letterman or a member of his family, joking or not would have emphasized would have stated that it should not be taken seriously and that it is only a joke.
