                Pois

Target:
To the Police General,Government of Indonesia and the Govenor of Bali:

As frequent visitors to the beautiful island of Bali and long-time Bali residents, we are very distressed by the ongoing situation of street dogs (and personally owned pets) being poisoned or stolen.  We understand that there are no laws against poisoning street dogs. There are several organizations (Yayasan Yudisthira Swarga. Yasasan B.A.W.A and The Bali Street Dog Fund, Australia) that desex street dogs to reduce the overall dog population responsibly, so there is no good reason to allow these dogs to be poisoned. It is shocking for Balinese and foreign people to find their pets poisoned and suffering a horrible death, and this is often also witnessed by tourists.

We read an article in an Australian newspaper (Friday,  November 30, 2007, Herald Sun),  stating that the Government  has a clean-up campaign to kill street dogs around Nusa Dua where the Climate Control Conference is being held to spare visitors the sight of these dogs.  If true, we feel this is inhumane, and most of the Conference visitors would be horrified to learn about it. Leaving potassium cyanide in the streets where animals, birds and children could find it is surely an environmental hazard!  We do not believe that the Indonesian Government would poison dogs, but we do know that some hotel owners, shop keepers and food stalls do commit this unacceptable practice, without thinking that children might also be harmed.

We ask the Governments of Bali and Indonesia to address this problem immediately by introducing laws to stop this unacceptable activity.  We also ask the Governments of Bali and Indonesia to introduce basic animal welfare rights as in other countries. All animals should have the right not to be harmed and it would reflect well on Indonesia if laws were in place to prevent people being from ill-treating or killing them. Many Balinese care for their dogs and are heartbroken when they are stolen for food or poisoned.

There are well-known food stalls in Bali (some called RW warungs) that specifically sell dog meat. Much of this meat is from street dogs that were killed by poisoning with potassium cyanide.   Also, many street dogs have been injected with a medicine called Ivermectin to control skin disease, which can cause serious health problems in humans if the dog meat is eaten.  In fact, people have become gravely ill and even died after eating dog meat.

We the undersigned urge you to create and enforce laws that ban the poisoning of any dogs and the stealing of companion animals.

I visited Bali and was stunned by the genuine kindness and immense humanity from the people of Bali--I hope this amazing outlook from the people of Bali can now extend to the Bali dogs which are shockingly unwell, neglected and frightening at times.

Please stop this cruelty and remember that Bali is known for its belief of peace & harmony towards all earthly beings, as much as its natural beauty.

I'm raised in a family who don't really care of animal, but recently my brother bought a puppy n my dad,me and my brother have to take care of it. He was sick when we first bought him, n I feel so grateful to God, for choosing instead of others, so thta he can be saved. Since then, I feel more concern about the welfare of animals, and through the petition I want to support all kinds of protection to animal. They have rights to live too!

It was tough to bury our all-time favourite dog Sumba, after he was poisoned near Ubud, Bali in 2006. His brother Tommy, living with neighbours, also died in agony within hours of Sumba. Several of their playmates have been taken the same way. Such cruelty and sadness! We still love Indonesia and the people, though. Hope this petition can help stop the wanton killing.

Anything I say would be too radical, as I really love dogs. Everything I wrote down I backspaced out, because I can't think of anything nice to say to these dog poisoners. Just please stop killing our children.

I am appalled to learn of this situation of the poisoning of street dogs by the government of Indonesia. As a veterinarian, I am compelled to speak up for living beings who cannot speak for themselves. This atrocity must be corrected.

i have been to bali and i am a dog lover. either way i didn't notice a huge amount of dogs running around nor did i find any tourists to be bothered by dogs. dogs are living beings and should be treated with the same respect as humans. i think those of the balinese government should be punished for poisoning the animals and then on top of it, selling the toxic meat for human consumption. isn't that murder x2?

I just returned from Bali, and while it is a beautiful country, I was saddened by the state of the many street dogs. The government of Bali needs stricter laws on animal welfare as well as educating the local people on how to properly care for dogs. There needs to be very strict laws prohibiting the poisoning of dogs. This is inhumane and unacceptable. I was relieved to know that there are organizations in Bali that are helping the Bali street dog. I urge the government to create laws that ban stealing or poisoning dogs. These dogs are beautiful and do not deserve to be harmed in any way.

I was a recent visitor/tourist to Bali and Java and although I enjoyed my visit, I was horrified and saddened by the treatment of the beautiful Balinese dogs. I strongly support BAWA's efforts to control the dog population and am shocked to hear of the poisoning of dogs and the regular "clean-up campaign" by killing street dogs. I strongly protest such inhumanity. The Indonesian and local governments should take action to stop such practice and publicly denounce it or else it will have adverse effects on the tourism in Bali.

We ARE regular visitors but have been deeply disturbed bythe lack of care for the street and beach dogs . Seeing them so unwell , wounded and neglected has spoiled much of the enjoyment of this beautiful island . Please listen to the words and emotion of this petition and take positive action. It is not the fault of the dog that it was born and each one deserves protection and respect. Thank you for your consideration Judith and Robert Hood [Rob has been visiting since 1974]

Especially Balinese, as believer in Reincarnation, should take care of these creatures. Or do they want to become a Balinese street dog in their next life?
