The primary focus of an Office of Special Assistant to the President for Population and Sustainability Issues would be the development a comprehensive strategy for achieving population stabilization and sustainable development both domestically and internationally. Immediate objectives the for office would be:
One... Compile information to create a shared understanding of the human population's impact on the environment on which humanity relies for its survival.Two... Develop Administration positions as to whether U.S. and global population growth are desirable or not.
It is clear that the United States perpetually growing human population cannot be sustained by our domestic bio-capacity; it is just as clear that the perpetually growing international population can not be sustained by the Earth, a planet already in severe ecological crisis. We cannot continue to add hundreds of millions to our nation and billions to the surface of our already over-taxed world and expect good results... not for the planet, nor for the people born into failing civilizations.
We the undersigned, appealing to your sense of duty to the United States of America, and likewise the obligation for her to act in strong and thoughtful leadership in the theatre of international relations, request of you, as elected representatives of our republic, to immediately pass legislation instituting an Office of Special Advisor to the President on Population and Sustainability.
It is clear that the United States perpetually growing human population cannot be sustained by our domestic bio-capacity; its just as clear that the perpetually growing international population can not be sustained by the Earth, a planet already in severe ecological crisis. We cannot continue to add hundreds of millions to our nation and billions to the surface of our already over-taxed world and expect good results... not for the planet, nor for the people born into failing civilizations.

The development of a comprehensive strategy for achieving population stabilization and sustainable development both domestically and internationally. Immediate objectives the for office would be:
One... Compile information to create a shared understanding of the human population's impact on the environment on which humanity relies for its survival.Two... Develop Administration positions as to whether U.S. and global population growth are desirable or not.
Once a position is established, the office should be charged with proposing actions and policies to pursue that decision. This would include promoting development of both domestic policies and the policies of governments around the world with regard to population, family planning, climate change, and other elements of global sustainability.
Second, the office should examine other policy proposals that come to the President to evaluate whether they help or hinder the pursuit of that position. This role would enable the office to intervene in key national debates, for example: foreign assistance policies, global warming, immigration policy, or labor policy.
With your help, exponential population growth can be stopped both at home and abroad. In addition to the dedicated efforts of so many admirable non-governmental organizations around the world, we need a full time effort coming from Washington DC .
What is at stake is nothing less than this: the livability of our nation and the planet, both for ourselves and the miraculous array of species with which we share them both. The future is too precious to trade away for a lack of common sense or fear of ideological and political confrontations.
