Preserve Visual Arts in Glen Cove Schools

With appreciation of the challenges the Glen Cove school district faces in addressing the current funding crisis, we are requesting that no cuts in staff be made to the visual arts department for the following reasons:
  • The visual arts department has been downsized already over the past few years through attrition. Compared to other departments it is already sparsely staffed.
  • Cuts to staff in the visual arts ultimately means eliminating all of the young teaching talent, which the district has made an investment in developing.
  • The district invested substantial resources in offering 3 levels of digital photography classes. A skilled photographer was hired to develop the program and acquire the technology needed to properly instruct students. If this staff position is eliminated, these classes will be offered without an experienced photographer who can effectively teach composition, content, and use of photographic accessories that exist outside the computer.
If we truly see the arts as the crown jewel of our district, we need to preserve the valuable assets that we have developed in the Glen Cove School District.

Dear Dr. Laria and Glen Cove Board of Education Members,

With appreciation of the challenges the Glen Cove school district faces in addressing the current funding crisis, we are requesting that no cuts in staff be made to the visual arts department for the following reasons:

The visual arts department has been downsized already over the past few years through attrition. Compared to other departments it is already sparsely staffed.

Cuts to staff in the visual arts ultimately means eliminating all of the young teaching talent, which the district has made an investment in developing.

The district invested substantial resources in offering 3 levels of digital photography classes. A skilled photographer was hired to develop the program and acquire the technology needed to properly instruct students. If this staff position is eliminated, these classes will be offered without an experienced photographer who can effectively teach composition, content, and use of photographic accessories that exist outside the computer.

Visual literacy, both the ability to analyze images and create presentations that effectively communicate content, is an increasingly important skill that good visual arts instruction provides students with.  If we truly see the arts as the crown jewel of our district, we need to preserve the valuable assets that we have developed in the Glen Cove School District.

Sincerely,
