Prevent Drilling in the Arctic Ocean

When I read about the possibility of shell drilling for oil in the Arctic Ocean, I was appalled. This area is home to several species of whale and seals. There is no reason why we should begin drilling for oil. We have the technology to change our ways. We need to stop doing things that obviously don't work, and switch to energies that are more sustainable. It's as if they have learned nothing from oil spills in the past. These occurences are tragic and absolutely devestating to the environment. Oil travels faster than whales can swim. If they choose to drill here, and there is an accident, the majority of these whales will die. The bowhead, beluga and gray whales are all on the endangered species list. While their numbers are still high, if something were to happen just think what this would do to their population. We need to understand that we are not the only things that are alive on this planet. It is home to so many creatures, and we were once able to live with them peacefully. It baffles me that we see no problem with destroying their homes to make way for fancy cabinets and useless junk. The planet cannot sustain our way of living, and this is only becoming more clear with each passing year. We are destroying it! I cannot sit back, and let the actions of the few determine the fate of our entire planet. This drilling is just one more step in the wrong direction. If Shell really wants to be a successful business, they need to get out of the oil trade, and start producing something more sustainable. Pave the way for a cleaner and healthier world, not just for the animals, but for people too.

I hope you agree with at least some of the things I am saying. It is so important for us to respect our planet, and take care of it. There is no backup for us to go to. We have to clean the messes that we have made, and prevent future devastation. Thank you for taking the time to read this, I hope you will stand by me on this issue.

We, the undersigned, would like to address concerns about the possibility of drilling for oil in the Arctic Ocean north of Alaska. We fail to see how it could have a "negligible impact" on the local wildlife. It is home to endangered species of whales and seals, and any human influence could impact these creatures in a negative way. We fear what would happen in the event of an oil spill in this area especially. This would devastate the population of these beautiful creatures, and the place they have called home for many generations. It is time to learn from our mistakes, and to take a step towards creating a sustainable alternative to oil. We ask Shell to use the money they would have spent on this drilling project to produce a new and innovative product that could change the way our society works. We have the technology to make sustainability possible, but it will never happen if someone doesn't take the first step. Shell has the means to create this, and be a pioneer company for a new way of human living. One that is cleaner, and respects the environment for the good of all the creatures on the planet - including humans. We thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and hope that you will consider our request.
