PROTECT MAUI FROM SUPERSTORES
The Maui County Council is currently considering a bill prohibiting new or expanded Superstores on Maui.
These stores are an economic disaster most places, but in a place like Maui they are especially destructive to the economy, environment, infrastructure, and island way of life that makes Maui the paradise it is. Big-box stores would force more local businesses to close, and prevent others from opening. In these tough economic times we need to protect our people and businesses and find more sustainable ways to look at development, and there is nothing "Sustainable" about a Superstore.
We hope that all Maui residents, small business owners, and those who love Maui will sign our petition and let the Council know that they are in support of a BAN ON SUPERSTORES on Maui, Molokai, and Lanai.
The Council will be discussing and voting on this bill at their March 20th meeting. We do not have much time, so please:

We the undersigned residents, small business owners, and lovers of Maui are very concerned about the effects any new or expanded Superstores will have on our local businesses, ohana, environment, traffic, and community.
We know you are considering the passage of a prohibition on new Superstores and the expansion of current ones, and I just want to let you know that I support this ban, and hope you will do everything you can to enact it.
These stores are harmful to our economy, environment and island way of life. We need to be focusing on development that is sustainable for the long-term, and I hope you will do everything you can to pass the bill banning them from our islands. We need you to protect our local business. We need you to approve the Ban on Superstores!
Your leadership on this issue has been impressive so far, and hope you will continue protecting Maui by passing this bill as soon as possible. There are a lot of us who need the help.

We need fairer trade -- free and fair trade is acceptable but unfair trade agreements that are free are unacceptable. I have already signed a petition about unfair trade between U.S. and China considering China has had no labor unions; workers are forced to often work in sweat shops, are underpaid, not provided sufficient health benefits, and are forced to work in workplaces with poor working conditions that are unsafe and unhealthy to be in. The fact that in China also child labor is not illegal and children can be exploited and forced to work is wrong -- we cannot ignore our values and accept products from a country with a government that does not respect human rights or democracy. Also the fact the Chinese government is unfairly manipulating that nation's currency is a concern. We need fair trade and that includes protecting Maui also from super stores. |

PLEASE KEEP MAUI AS UNIYQUE AS IT IS! WE ALL KNOW WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PLACES GET COMMERCIALIZED,THEY LOOSE THEIR CHARME & NATIVES OFTEN THEIR RURAL COUNTRYSIDE!
Maui is way too powerful and beautiful to be ruined by these massive corporations. We cannot allow it!!
As a visitor to Maui I would be appalled to see a Big Box superstore on the island. Don't ruin tourism, keep these types of stores off the island.
We don't need any more superstores. We need to stop super sizing everything or we will end up like our supersize cousins on the mainland. Please don't destroy the beautiful environment in Maui, pull back on on this urban sprawl and don't pave over our island paradise.
I love buying in small locally owned shops; I like supporting my friend's and our community economy. Much rather give my money to someone I know than some big mega corporation who's practices I know nothing about and may in fact be quite detrimental to World economy and environment!
Super stores are not healthy for Maui and it's people. I am a frequent visitor to Maui and would much rather see local culture and local people make it in business. Big Box stores are not conducive to that.
Please, no more box stores on Maui. Keep it rural and simple way of life.
Please keep Maui the unique destination and cultural treat that it has been. Superstores are not part of that good feeling that makes Maui the #1 island in the world again with Conde Naste's survey. They did it to Hawaii Kai, Oahu when Hawaii Kai was a farm land, they are doing it to Waianae, Oahu right now today as we speak. Dont let it happen to you Maui. Maui Nokaoi. Aloha, Bradda Mel:-)
Although I live on O'ahu now, I was born and raised on Maui and many of my family and friends still live on Maui. It is my hope that Maui doesn't develop to the level of O'ahu and it's urban sprawl. Keep Maui pa'a!

Enough is enough! We need to look beyond our noses and quit searching for short term fixes.
The more development, the more trash we are going to have in our beaches. For most kikies, our beaches are sanctuary. A place away from drugs and violence. Aloha

It is imperatively wrong to take away the spirit and revenues of mom & pop stores and homogenize the traditional, old style Hawaiian culture with Superstores that take away and transfer to the Mainland most of the revenues from the Maui-based Superstores.

Large corporations will never have enough of your money. Allow them into your neighborhood, and most or all your local business owner friends will soon be out of business. We should be allowed to create our OWN jobs, and not depend on huge, greedy corporations for our living.
I've moved off island to Kaua'i due to all the over building. Maui was once beautiful and we need to protect this. Keep the country country!!!
