We are now in a 60-day comment period on Northwest Cascade Power's application to remove land from Pinecone Burke Provincial Park for a transmission line relating to its proposed power development in the Upper Pitt valley. This comment period will end around April 2.
Run of River Power Inc, is having a public meeting to disclose its application for a Provincial Park boundary adjustment and is graciously giving BC residents 60 days to respond. The Provincial Park boundary adjustment is required to provide for a 4.6 km long transmission line corridor across a mountain pass in Pinecone Burke Provincial Park. Recall the NDP in the 1990's creating the Lower Mainland Nature Legacy? Well Pinecone-Burke Provincial Park was created at this time and Run of River Power Inc, now wants an adjustment to the park so that its proposed 42 km long, 230kV power line, generating an anticipated $60 million per year in gross revenue can go ahead.
WHY DOES IT CONCERN ME?
Once a Park Boundary is adjusted for corporate profit, it will be adjusted again. It's the principal of the matter thats at stake and citizens are unaware of the behind doors robbery going on.Consider that Pinecone Burke Provincial Park is exceptional in that this wild and remote feeling landscape is in fact located very near to residents of the Lower Mainland of BC. The park extends from the boundary of Garibaldi Provincial Park in the north, to Burke Mountain in Coquitlam in the south. To the west lies Pitt Lake and the Pitt River. Run of River Power Inc, operates a hydroelectric power generation station at Brandywine Creek, and sells the power to BC Hydro on a long-term 20 year contract. It also has three development projects located within close proximity to one another in the Upper Mamquam watershed.
So if you care about where you live, if you love the scenery, the wild places, the quiet places, and want them to exist in perpetuity? Then sign here to let our government know you oppose this or show up and say no to private power interests and yes to preserving the legacy of our parks for public interest.

Thursday, Feb.28: Pitt Meadows, Ramada Inn, 19267 Lougheed Highway
Tuesday, March 4: Mission, Best Western Mission City Lodge, 32281 Lougheed Highway
Times: The open house sessions will be open from 4 to 9 pm. There will be presentations from 6:30- 8:30 pm by the proponent and BC Parks. We are told there will be an opportunity for questions and comments from the public during that time period.
