Save South March Highlands Old-Growth Forest

There is a rich old-growth forest with 18 species-at-risk, within the city of Ottawa, Canada's capital.  The City is building a road through the heart of this unique ecosystem, and on July 19 a developer plans to start clear-cutting trees to build a subdivision north of the Beaver Pond!  But the developer made an agreement with the City that it would fulfill 89 conditions for Site Plan approval, including a Tree Preservation Plan and an archaeological plan.  We are calling on the City to make sure all required conditions are met before a single tree is disturbed.  Ultimately we want to stop all construction and protect this pristine area.

Petition to the Mayor of Ottawa and City Council:

We, the undersigned, oppose the clear-cutting of the old growth forest and the destruction of at-risk plants and animals in the South March Highlands, which is being planned by Kanata Northlands (KNL) developers without having met the Plan of Subdivision conditions established by the City of Ottawa and the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB).

We request that the City of Ottawa instruct the developers to cease all development activity until the required conditions are satisfied and explicitly approved by the City.

We request that the City advise KNL that the City will seek an injunction to halt any clear-cutting that may be attempted prior to explicit City approval off all required conditions of construction.

We call on the City to ensure that the conditions of the site plan approval are satisfied in the most ecologically-responsible manner.

We also request that the City seriously negotiate with the National Capital Commission and developers to find an alternative to developing this ecologically-sensitive land.
