Protected Bicycle Lanes on the Upper West Side

Protected Bicycle Lanes on the Upper West Side

Target:
NYC Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan

We, the people signing this petition, urge the Department of Transportation to build protected bicycle lanes on the streets of the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Protected bike lanes corral cyclists into a designated area, which makes their cycling behavior more predictable. The result is safer streets for bicyclists, pedestrians, and car drivers. Additionally, as cycling becomes safer, more people will cycle. As more people cycle, cycling becomes safer. It is a virtuous circle, where cars and bicyclists learn to slow down, follow the rules, and respect one another and pedestrians.

We need to make the streets of the Upper West Side truly democratic places that are safe for all users. Protected lanes will encourage more people to take up cycling and will force drivers to slow down and acknowledge other users.

I commute by bike roughly 12 miles a day, every day of the year. While I've been extremely impressed by the progress that has been made in terms of safer streets, there is still more to be done. Quite simply, having physically separated bike lanes would literally save both lives and limbs. In addition, I believe the prohibition against cars that park/idle in the bike lanes should be more strictly enforced. I believe I'm more likely to get a ticket for riding on a bicycle on a sidewalk than if I were to idle a car in a bike lane; yet the latter poses a much greater threat to neighborhood safety. Please install protected bike lanes, which would truly benefit the entire community.

Biking is good for the environment and good for public health. Reclaiming the streets from polluting, noisy and dangerous motor vehicles is the way of the future. Embrace progress!

We need to encourage more people to bicycle. What better way than to make it safer and easier for them. Plus, it increases safety for those on the sidewalks. Bring protected bike lanes to our neighborhood!

I understand the need to accommodate delivery and service trucks. Also, for everyone's safety, I would suggest rule/enforcement of several items: For cars: turn signals, blocking intersections, yield to pedestrians. For bicycles: lights at night (esp. delivery bikes), turn signals (can't we at least try and teach these?), yield to pedestrians. Although it may be out of scope, let me also put a plug in for traffic-free Central Park.

I'm a bike-rider because I prefer to commute on the ground-surface (subway), save energy and pollution (of cars) for a better and more healthy environment! Please make it safe and easy for me and others to ride this beautiful Upper West side neighborhood which could be greener and even more pleasant if more people would ride bikes instead of cars.

New Yorkers of all stripes deserve protected bike lanes, and as an Upper West Sider, I want to see them here as soon as possible. Painted bike lanes are simply not sufficient to curb dangerous driver behavior or encourage law-abiding cycling among those brave enough to ride in current traffic conditions. Many more people would ride, and ride more predictably, in protected bicycle lanes that are safe, designed for bike traffic, and remind other vehicles that bikes are entitled to take a lane.

Somehow the UWS seems to lag behind most other neighborhoods when it comes to bike lanes. And as someone who has been doored often enough, a protected bike lane would be deluxe.

I would go all the way up the west side to Inwood. We need a Dyckman St protected greenway to connect the northern termini of the Hudson greenway to the Harlem greenway. Dyckman St is a nightmare for bikes. Doubleparking is horrific, and we have a proposal http://www.geography.hunter.cuny.edu/~mclarke/DyckmanGreenwayHandout-2-4-08.pdf that Community Board 12 asked for NYC DOT to evaluate.

Most recent census reports that the number of children living in the Upper West side has doubled within the past decade. We need safe routes for them to bicycle.

Making cycling safer is one of the best ways to decrease noxious emissions and make mobility safer for all street users.

I have been riding religiously since for the past year to reduce my carbon footprint. I ride on the west side bike path and rely on the bike paths to get around.

As an upper West Sider for many decades, and as an active bicycle rider, I would love for the city to create more protected bike lanes on the crowded streets of my neighborhood.

My wife and I commute to work every day on our bikes and would greatly appreciate the added safety of a protected bike lane. The one on lower 9th Ave (part of my daily ride) is a real treat that should be extended to other parts of the city.

As a bicycle commuter living on the UWS, I am keenly aware of how we need safe passageways for those living a green existence. And away from the erratic, speeding motorized vehicles. Help me do that! Thank you. pc

I am a strong advocate of walking, scootering, and bicycling as a healthful and sustainable modes of transportation and believe our city should be doing everything possible to support and encourage these activities.
