PUERTO RICO'S NEXT KILLING SPREE

Target:
State Veterinarian Carlos Carazo Gilot and the PR Health Department
Puerto Rico is planning another of their infamous "removals", this time of the cat colonies of Old San Juan.
With animal rights organizations like Save a Gato dramatically decreasing the number of strays in the area, and vastly improving the lives and health of the strays that exist, the stray cat problem has diminished in the past few years. Even the most notorious colony area is down to less than 100 cats.

Instead of being grateful for the volunteer efforts of the citizens of this very community-based city the State Veterinarian Carlos Carazo Gilot, names these organizations "part of the problem" in the June 4th, 2008 edition of the San Juan Star, announcing it is his decision that the "removal" of these cats is legitimate due to the risk of public health problems, such as fleas, ticks, fungi and itch mites.
Unfortunately our government has managed to overlook the severe drug problem of our city, where Hepatitis is in epidemic proportions and people living on the street are stricken with severe infections and gangrene, and instead decided to blame their problems on a few cats that keep the city free of rats and other animals that cause actual health risks.

We the undersigned are appalled  of your recent decision to "remove" the cat colonies from Old San Juan. These cats are very much a part of our community, and keep other animals out (like rats and mice) that would cause a real health threat to our population.
Instead of disregarding the trap and release program of Save A Gato, please assist them in caring for these cats and having their numbers decrease a humane way, not just finding a reason to go on yet another killing spree.
We are disgusted with the processes our government is employing for animal issues. Killing everything you see is NOT the way to educate the people, and  will NOT be tolerated by the people of this fine city. We are not barbarians who choose massacres to solve our problems. Puerto Rican people are a wonderful, caring people who do not like to see our government act like animals themselves.
Please update your views on animal issues and choose other methods. We do not want to see you come into our town and mass murder the animals we greet every morning with food and love.

I find it unconscionable that the Puerto Rican government would condone the extermination of the cat population in San Juan, when it has been proven in many communities around the country that Spay and Release programs are effective and humane. I ask you to reflect on the quote of Mahatma Ghandi: “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”. How do you want Puerto Rico and in particular, the government of Puerto Rico to be judged?

Please use the trap/neuter/return policy for all stray animals. As with humans, these are God's creatures as well and deserve kind and humane treatment. Thank you.

I believe these animals should be saved. This is not the fault of the animals, so why should they pay for it. This is the mess created by your people themselves. We need to be responsible, fix the, and let them be. The are not harm to anyone.

There is no reason to destroy these sweet and harmless animals. They are not feral, disease stricken, or a menace in any capacity. If the appeal to human decency is not compelling enough, think of the potential impact to puerto RICO's reputation and the subsequent impact to tourism.

IS A CRIME THE WAY THIS ANIMAL ARE TREATED, THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO LIVE AND TO BE PROTECTED. THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD FIND A FAIR SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM AND ACT WITH MERCY TO THIS ANIMALS ANYWAY THEY ARE HERE AND ARE PART OF OUR SOCIETY. IS OUR AND THE GOVERNMENT RESPONSABILITY TO TAKE CARE OF THEM.

I have been to puerto rico and have seen all of the stray cats and dogs it is horrible and very sad. All of those animals deserve a great home not to be thrown of bridges or beaten to death that is just ridiculous. Have some love and compassion don't harm these poor animals send them the mainland where they will be loved and taken care of. STOP KILLING THEM

I am writing to encourage that the trap/neuter/return (TNR) program be used to solve the homeless cats problem rather than the horrible cruel ineffective method of killing cats. Please reconsider and use the effective humane method of TNR.

I was amazed by the general heaalth and well being of all the cats I saw.( I spent several hours "visiting" with them along the fortress walk. Feral seems an inappropriate term for these gentle animals. Removal of this colony should have a serious impact on tourism. I will do all I can to spread the word.

Spaying and neutering cats and leaving them in their colonies would be the most humane way to deal with them and reduce the number and increase of the health of the cats.

Sarasota, Florida almost made the wrong decision 7 years ago. The Florida Fish and Wildlife was taped and broadcast to the public with crude and tasteless banter about the feral cat population. The public is eager to assist with the proven effective TNR program. We have one such member of a colony, added to our household from Casey Key. "Casey" is a very loving member of our family now thanks to caring individuals.

I have long decided to never go to the PR islands because of their inhumane treatment of dogs and cats. The cruelty to both sato's and gato's destroy any enjoyment the island can offer.

i now consider puerto rico a third world country.such an uncivilized country should never be considered suitable as an american state. and certainly not a tourist destination.

The treatment of animals in Puerto Rico is inhumane. The lack of education on the treatment of animals here is close to none.

I also agree with this petion due to the fact all of the politcals care about is what makes them look good. killing these cats is not the answers if you take a look you will notice that these animals are in the condition they are in because of heartless human beings and all they want is some love, attention and appreciation.

The government should support these organizations that are doing something with few or no resources by funding them and helping them with different alternatives to impove the life of puertoricans and the life of our animals and pets.

Please work with the Save a Gato volunteers to reach a compromise regarding the fate of these cats. There is no need to euthanize or remove the cats; the best course of action is to continue practicing TNR and finding homes for adoptable cats. In addition, studies have shown that when feral cats are removed, especially from islands, the mouse and rat populations explode; which can be detrimental to ground-nesting birds and raises numerous health concerns for humans. Again, the most practical solution to the situation is to continue the implementation of a TNR program.
