NEW YORK MILLS, Minn. -- A breeder in New York Mills, Minn., west of Brainerd, is charged with nine counts of felony animal cruelty, torture, and practicing veterinary medicine without a license. However, because of a loophole in the law, Kathy Bauck will get to keep her kennel of 1,000 dogs.

52-year-old Kathy Jo Bauck is licensed to sell animals at Pick of the Litter Kennels in New York Mills, Minn. But because she's licensed through the USDA, local animal investigators do not have the authority to get involved.

An employee at the kennel, Jason Smith, was a member of an animal rights group, and he observed and documented cruelty and violations of law at the kennel. Smith took undercover video, audio and pictures to the Sheriff's Office, which brought to light what was going on in the facility. Smith took field notes every day he worked there, highlighting cases of abuse and maltreatment.

Court documents state a scenario on May 5 that involved a bichon who was having puppies. The employee says when he saw the dog and her litter, one puppy was partially flattened and dead, a live puppy was hanging by the umbilical cord, and another one died a couple hours after birth.

Then, he says, Bauck and two other employees tried to pull a fourth puppy out of the womb with surgical clamps, only to rip off the puppy's tail and rear leg. That puppy also died.

Then, the employee says the mother dog sat in afterbirth for two days before dying herself. Bauck allegedly knew about the dog's condition, and did nothing.

The complaint illustrates dozens of cases of dogs suffering from wounds, swollen eyes, missing flesh, bloody sores, seizures, and emaciation while at the kennel -- and receiving either improper medical treatment or none at all.

Bauck has been accused of practicing veterinary medicine without a license before, and animal rights groups have accused her of abuse in the past.

Currently, Minnesota law does not allow local animal investigators access to facilities regulated by the USDA. However, legislation has been proposed that will change that. If the Breeder Bill passes, it will give investigators access to hold breeders accountable for their actions.

Kathy Bauck claims she is innocent and that it was just an animal rights group that was after her.

She is scheduled to appear in court on September 22

PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION, COMMENT & CROSS POST.  THIS SO-CALLED HUMAN "KATHY BAUCK" lSHOULD BE IN PRISON, JUST LIKE SHE DID TO THESE POOR ANIMALS.  SHE SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED TO HAVE ANOTHER ANIMAL IN HER LIFETIME.

THANK YOU FOR CARING & SPEAKING FOR THOSE WHO ARE NOT HEARD.

If she still has the puppy mill why was it not required for someone to monitor her 24/7. I would even quit my job to perform this duty and make sure she does not abuse these poor loving animals.

Pleas stop this woman. My dog came from Kathy, and she was so sick when we got her as a puppy. She was very dirty had an eye infections and kennel cough, she was supposed to be 12 weeks old and was only 2.8 lbs. She lied, gave us poor medical advise, that our vet said would kill our dog, she has a reputation built on her website by being registered with the USDA, she must be stopped. I never would have purchased from her, if the truth was available. She lied so much it was disgusting. SHE MUST BE STOPPED

I had bought a dog from Kathy that I picked out online from puppysonwheels.com. When I contacted her about it I insisted on going there to pick the puppy up. I was appauled at the conditions there. There was such a stench in the barn where my puppy was kept that my family one of my family members that went with could not stand it she had to leave and go sit in the car. There was a dog with a half chewed off face in the cage next to where my pup was, I asked if it was ok and she told me that the vet had just did surgery on it and it was resting, and there was another dog in the cage with it. I thought to myself no vet would put that dog back in that envoirnment. My pup was so dirty and smelled that when we go home from the 7 hour trip I had to bath her. And had to redo all the shots. My vet had never heard of the shot she said it had. The dog food she gave me to feed it and make a mush out of it and put garlic in it, when I told the vet this and showed her the food the vet said do not under no circumstances feed that to your puppy. I than called the ASPCA and near by humane society of Minnesota and reported her. They called back and said they would send someone out there but that there was not much they could do. I just wish I could have taken more puppies away that day so they didn't have to be in those conditions. It was -20 degrees with the windchill and puppies and dogs out in it without shelter. I am glad she may finally get her just dues. She should be locked up and the key thrown away.

Please stop this animal abuse, from ever happening again. This woman and her daughter are PURE EVIL. Those poor dogs. They should not have had to endure such torture. And the gov't needs to shut her down immediately and get all those dogs out of there. She is evil. To dunk those dogs in that solution is just evil. Just look at the video - it says it all. This woman and her daughter need to be imprisoned and have the same treatment. An eye for an eye. God bless the dogs.

I am appreciative to see newscasts increasing awareness of puppy mills and when such mills have been shut down. The more awareness individuals have, the more action that may be taken to shut down other puppy mills.

I think what Kathy is doing is uncalled for. I think she needs to be put away and maybe treated like how she is treating the dogs. I have two dogs that mean the world to me and they are just like my kids. If I found out anyong was treating my dogs that way you are damn right something would be done about it. I do not see how people can stand by and let her get away with this. Just put it this way would you let someone treat your children the way she is treating the animals on her property. I do hope that they find her guilty and send her away for a long time. Also i do believe that family members that have been involed in these crimes along with her like her daughter should be looking at charges also. I better stop typing cause I could go on telling you how I feel and what should be done to people like Kathy.
