Queensland Rail expects commuters on the Sunshine Coast to use platforms infected with wood rotting fungi. Although academics have indicated that there is a strong possibility that the infected platforms will give way, Queensland Rail has deemed them safe for use.
The fungi infect temporary platforms along the Sunshine Coast rail line. These temporary platforms cost eight hundred dollars a week to maintain, however, the continuing presence of the fungi indicates that the maintenance is insufficient. Crews have attempted to repair some of the platforms, however, the fungi persists. The platforms are only intended to have a twelve to eighteen month lifespan and it appears that they are due for replacement.
Queensland Rail claims that safety is their number one priority. If that is truly the case, they must replace the fungi-infested platforms before any injury occurs.
Passengers on the Sunshine Coast train line deserve to be safe. Demand that Queensland Rail replace the affected platforms immediately.
