We, the undersigned CFISD residents, would like you to reinstate public recognition of valedictorians and salutatorians during graduation ceremonies and offer them the option of presenting a speech. We strongly believe that the many years of hard work and dedication these students have given the school district deserve public acknowledgment from the district, their families, and their peers.

I know that I probably won't become valedictorian when I graduate in 2012, but I know I'm still going to work at it. In the end, I want to know who had enough dedication to overcome me. Yeah, I'll be upset, but I'll get over it. I believe it was Nneka Ogwumike from our very own Cy-Fair High School who had a 6.8/7.0 GPA and got into Stanford. She wasn't Number 1, but to accomplish such a feat is incredible and she's probably very proud of herself. GPA doesn't prove who you are or even how smart you are (it's really just strategically choosing your classes) and I think most people know that. Dr. Anthony, please, if you are worried about hurting feelings, don't. We are growing to be mature adults, meaning we can think just like you. And if that is the case, then ask yourself, could you get over it?

I think students who work hard should be recognized. They deserve to be honored. Sorry about the kids who didn't make it and who feel bad. There is still college. To the students who didn't earn it, sorry about your luck. Do the work. It is not fair to hold kids back because it might hurt under achievers feelings.

As the valedictorian of a Cy-Fair high school in 2007, I personally understand the importance of resolving this issue. I worked extremelly hard throughout my four years in high school to earn the recognition that I did not receive, and I was extremelly hurt when I learned that I would not be recognized let alone allowed to speak to my peers on graduation day. The letter they slipped in my envelope was all that I had receive to let me know that I was the valedictorian. It seems like the school is sending the wrong message by allowing two students that were both chosen based on popularity rather than scholarly achievement speak on one of the most important days of our lives. Although I have heard the administration say that recognizing the valedictorian increasing competition and makes other students feel bad, I do not see the difference between this and recognizing all the sports players through daily announcements, letter jackets (and yes, Cy-Fair is also one of the only schools in which you cannot letter for academics), and many other situations. Increasing competition in academics is not a bad thing, and we cannot just let the dissapointment of a few students stop us from recognizing the accomplishments of others.
That said, I urge the district officials to recognize the valedictorian and salutatorians for all of their hard work and accomplishments throughout high school.

I'm so tired of only hearing the negative news about the horrible events teens get involved in. It time to stand up and honor the successes of the 12 years of dedication and hard work of our youth, even if only for a few moments during their graduation ceremony. Let's promote the positive and not the negative.

These students deserve peer, family, and school recognition on their graduation day. They have worked very hard for this achievement and they have brought recognition to the district, as well. They should have their moment in the spotlight. They have definitely earned it.

LET THEM BE RECOGNIZED AND THEN KEEP TRACK OF THEM TO SEE HOW THEIR FUTURE AFTER GRADUATION GOES. GIVE THE OTHER STUDENTS SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO OR NOT TO LOOK FORWARD TO.
