Reduce Pesticides on the IUB Campus

Target:
IUB students, staff, faculty, and families
Sponsored by:

We the community of Indiana University Bloomington demand pesticides only be used on campus when their necessity is proven and documented, and where there is no other best practice available. We believe more public and transparent coordination of the Athletic  Department, Residential Halls, the Department of Facilities, the Physical Plant, and Indiana  Memorial Union is required for a thorough accounting of pesticide use on the IUB campus.  Furthermore, we  request that these entities document that they have someone on staff trained in Integrated Pest Management by  the criteria set out by the Integrated Pest Management Institute of America.  These actions are vital to our public health and a sustainable campus.

Many people drop out of school because of the very health issues pesticides cause, neurotoxic in the least; cancer can be caused in 3 ways; the chemicals cause acidosis, endocrine disruption and their synergistic composition of which they are made from well known carcinenig compounds. At a local highschool with a very high drop out rate someone requested the labels and MSDS of all the toxic chemicals used on campus. She was told there are too many and given a list of 37 used regularly throughout, the entire year.

Let's be on the cutting edge of this issue and show some leadership. IU should set an example for the Bloomington community, the state of Indiana and Academic institutions. Thanks!

Although I live in southern IN, I am also affected by IU's pesticide use; water flows this way, and it's hard to stop breathing the air, you know? Many alternatives to pesticides are available; I haven't used a pesticide in my 54 years on this wonderful earth, and my gardens and yards have been beautiful---and healthy, for me and my family and my pets, as well as for the myriad other living organisms in the soil, on the earth, and in the air. Please stop. Thank you.

This is an important first step to take towards creating a more sustainable campus. With so many alternatives to pesticides available, there is really no excuse to continue using them.

In my opinion, we as a society are at a turning point in the way we relate to the natural world. We can keep hurting ourselves by polluting the very ground we walk on, or behave more intelligently. Cutting back on the use of unsustainable, highly toxic chemicals the true safety implications of which no one really knows is a good place to start.

We can't afford not to do everything within our power to stop polluting our planet. This is a tangible step we can take to that end, so let's do it! It's important and it is feasible.

I think this is a smart, progressive and necessary initiative. This is a chance to learn something!!!

These actions are essential to IU's "good citizenship" with the community of Bloomington, Indiana, which has suffered greatly from pollution in the past.

So many physical and non-chemical weed and pest controls are now available.
