Reform The System, Restore Our Families

We the undersigned, the families of this community, feel that the Social Rehabilitation Services of Kansas needs an overhaul. We understand that this agency was set up to protect our children from neglect & abuse. It has been instrumental in keeping lots of children safe from danger over the years. But somehow along the way the system has failed us. No longer are our children's best interest being met. Hundreds of children are being ripped from their homes every year and being placed into SRS custody, some without any allegations of abuse or neglect and are placed into foster homes in which they are receiving mediocre, and substandard care, developing behavioral issues (magically cured by medicines instead of discipline) and having problems adjusting socially due to being shifted from home to home. All while good parents are being treated like hardened criminals being required to take classes and testing for concerns unrelated to their history.

We ask that stiffer monitoring be placed on Foster homes, all court orders required by parents also be required of Foster parents, and allegations of abuse in the homes be taken seriously. We ask that penalties be enforced on Foster parents who falsify documents or claims against parents to further their own agendas, including making behavioral claims about the children that do not exist to get more pay, and telling the children negative things about their parents that will affect how they feel about going home or themselves.

We ask that the shortcomings of this system be able to be made public by opening the records and no longer allowing misconduct to continue under the shield of confidentiality. We ask that workers be held accountable for violating their own procedures regarding reporting, investigations, & visitations. We ask that workers be held accountable for any false information reported during the investigation proceedings. We ask that relatives be given the opportunity to care for our children BEFORE being placed into SRS custody, and that the time limit the children are allowed to be in custody be reduced.

We the community believe that it is in the best interest of a child to be with their natural family. We understand that in some cases children need to be protected and want to ensure that this determination is made accurately and thoroughly and that these children will be placed in homes in which they will receive better care than in the previous situation.
We as a community want what's best for our children. We want healthy, happy children who will grow up to be successful, productive members of society as adults. Our children are our future, and we are willing to stand up for them.

We humbly, and respectfully ask that you support us in getting reform in the SRS system to more effectively service the needs of our children.

Thank you for taking the time to hear our concerns.
