Refugee Status for gravely ill farm worker

Target:
Citzenship and Immigration Canada
Sponsored by:
We, the undersigned, urge that the Government of Canada support the
Humanitarian and Compassionate application for Mr. Hermelindo Gutierrez
and his family. We are aware of the circumstances of his case. He came to
support his family by working in Canada legally through the Seasonal
Agricultural Worker Program. After many years of working here, he
unexpectedly suffered from kidney failure. Following a long separation,
his wife and three young children came to visit him and his son Sergio
suffered from a head injury while cycling shortly after their arrival.

Hermelindo Gutierrez is relying on regular dialysis treatments to keep him
alive. We are gravely concerned that he will not get the care he needs in
Mexico to sustain his life and allow him to provide for a family and
support a son recovering from a head injury. Hermelindo Gutierrez is a dedicated worker, husband and father; he is well liked and respected by those who know him. He would make an excellent addition to Canadian society. He has already proved his value to our country through his years of work here and his involvement in his local community.

Given the circumstances that brought the family to Canada and the lack of life-sustaining care that will be available to Hermelindo Gutierrez if he is deported to Mexico we, the undersigned, believe that the Gutierrez family should be granted refugee status.  Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.

As humans we owe it to each other to care for each other to the best of our ability and within our capacity. Thousands of migrant workers sustain our economy, enrich our lives, and culture. They do so while living under unfavourable conditions and while being separated from their families due to desperate circumstances. As human beings they should be treated fairly and equitably. They should not be subjected to the harsh realities that many migrants face upon working within Canada. As people who give so much to our land we owe it to them to help them out of their dire situations as we extend compassionate arms. We owe it to them to offer residency within Canada as they already contribute much more than we offer them. Economically speaking, the Canadian government systematically exploits workers as they are demanded and required to contribute to our Employment Insurance system, our pension plans and taxes. In return we treat them differently from our Canadian employees. An example of such unfair treatment is that we offer migrant workers limited health care through such stipulations such as requiring them to reside in Canada for three months before they can access health care. I am ashamed of the way the Canadian government treats people as it pursues profit over humanity, as it implements unfair and harsh restrictions on the livelihoods of migrant workers. Canada needs to overhaul the way it treats migrant workers and needs to immediately change its racist, sexist and inhuman policies and practices. As a Canadian citizen I demand my government, the officials I elect and who claim to represent my voice, to listen and to act as humans for humans and to immediately implement change to this unjust migrant worker system. A good step towards change would be to care for Hermelindo Gutierrez and his family in their time of need.

In light of the strenuous conditions that migrant farm workers are exposed to, we should at the very least grant these men and women the right to stay, when in our country, working under questionable conditions, they become ill.

This has been and should continue to be part of the integral framework of our Canada. Please reach out and help this family. It is an oppertunity to save a life.

It seems to me that there is no reason for delaying a decision. This man has come here legally and earned an honest living. His efforts to support his family and his respect for Canada are honourable characteristics. Let's get on with doing the right thing and help restore much more than the good health of Mr. Gutierrez. Sincerely, Agnes Arce

I would hope that the family will be able to stay and get a chance to become citizens. As Canadians we are so lucky to be born her having all the advantages our society offers. This man was working where many Canadian's feel they are too good to work. It would be a waste to loose such a hard working family.

Canada should be fair to its migrant workers. After Mr. Gutierrez has given us his much-needed labour, we can't just kick him out.

We gain great benefit from immigrant/migrant workers and we must afford them the care and respect required to protect and support - full rights as citizens.
