On the morning of January 1st 2012 the citizens of the United States of America awoke to find themselves suddenly living in fear and wonderment. Feeling betrayed by the very people they trusted to represent their interests and to speak on their behalf. The people that swore an oath to protect and uphold the rights guaranteed to us by the Constitution of the United States of America. The people that betrayed that oath by signing into law the National Defense Authorization Act thereby stripping all Americans of their constitutional rights
On the morning of January 18th 2012 I signed a petition to impeach President Obama. That letter went to the White House, Congress, and to the Senators of the State of Colorado. Senator Mark Udall sent me a reply. The letter he sent back to opened with; “As you may know, I am firmly opposed to several provisions in the FY12 NDAA that regulate the detention of terrorism suspects” (Office of Senator Udall) in addition, the letter from his office went on to say “I firmly believe that terrorism presents a serious threat to the United States” (Office of Senator Udall)
Senator Udall then went on to say “our law enforcement, military and intelligence communities have spent more than a decade carefully and collaboratively determining the most effective methods to successfully capture and prosecute terrorists, and I believe these provisions may undermine that work. Moreover, my views on these provisions are shared by the professionals who are actually in charge of waging the battle to keep us safe, including the Secretary of Defense, Director of National Intelligence and the directors of the FBI and CIA.”(Office of Senator Udall) yet in spite of these apparent inhibitions felt by Senator Udall and like so many other elected officials he and fellow colleagues signed the bill rather than have it revised to assure the safety and peace of mind of the American people.
I am sure countless other Americans who as I, signed similar petitions received similar letters from their governing Officials. So I must ask you, is terrorism such a threat that Americans cannot be trusted to live life as they and generations before them have. Can we not be afforded the comfort of knowing when faced with a natural disaster such as hurricane Katrina that we can care for our families our selves rather than herded into FEMA camps as our brothers and sisters in Louisiana and other southern states had to endure? We have been taught by generations before us and indeed by history and even stories in the bible that we should be prepared for such things. Even the animals of the earth store food to survive times of famine. And now by doing this very thing we can be taken from our families and imprisoned or even executed discreetly with those we love never knowing what happened to us.
Our forefathers taught us how to hunt for food and how to preserve that food for later use. Our Constitution guaranties us and indeed stresses the right and need for every man from age 16 to 60 to keep and bear arms to ensure the safety of our people our freedom and god given right to liberty against all that would threaten it be it a foreign or domestic threat. Our constitution also guarantees us the right and the need to form state militias formed and operated by the citizens to uphold those rights. After the NDAA passed anyone involved in those groups and even hunters can be suspected of treason simply by having waterproof ammunition, today all ammunition is waterproof.
I see our troops return home disabled and missing limbs from a war they do not want to fight, they leave their families and all they hold dear to take up a rifle and ship out to strange and foreign lands, they go to defend the country they love and to ensure our great nation is preserved. We all have brothers, sisters, friends and neighbors that have been disabled and lost limbs and fingers in the line of work. Performing the jobs that build the machines that make our industries profitable build tools and machines needed to remain the most powerful nation the world has ever known. After NDAA all these people can be suspect of treason because they sacrificed for their country and their families.
Generations before us taught us to conserve our money, to work hard and save for the things we want and need and to see us through hard times and to see our children get an education and secure their future. I am reminded of a passage from the bible that advocates proper use of money; “In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has.” (Proverbs 21:20, NIV) to our forefathers it was almost thought as a sin to buy on credit; our grandparents might have bought a house on credit. Our parents used credit to purchase a home and maybe a car. Today everything is bought on credit and because of this, banks suffer unpaid debt and our economy has fallen into ruin and yet to go into a store and use cash one is thought a traitorous act.
As I think of our politicians who in spite of strong inhabitations and reservations would still sign a bill that would deprive us the freedoms they swore to protect, knowing that it is wrong. I think of our founding fathers and those that would fight beside them. Rugged Patriots and heroes, those fathers and sons whom, in spite of overwhelming odds and lack of proper equipment, without so much as shoes on their feet, fighting pneumonia and many other ailments would forge frozen rivers at times when all seemed in vain, starving wanting no more than a warm bed and a hot meal still found the fortitude to reach down deep and push forward for a cause they believed in and yet our nation’s leaders cannot find the courage to simply utter the words “this is wrong” and stand their ground to find a just solution.
I look back to my childhood and remember the most sacred words I have ever uttered, words that to this day fill me with pride, love of country, and devout patriotism, words that fill my heart with such emotion that by simply thinking of their meaning and all that have given their last breath and drop blood, mothers who gave their sons and husbands, and the children that never knew their fathers to guaranty me the honor of speaking them, words that people from other countries have died in the attempt to have the privilege to speak and never did, words that our children are forbidden to speak in public, these are those words; I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and, to the republic for which it stands one nation under god inadvisable for liberty and justice for all.
I pledge allegiance to the flag, (not a man). Of the United States of America, and to the republic (not a totalitarian government that would put me under thumb and subjugate me). For which it stands one nation under god, (not the government elected to “serve” us) indivisible (not divided into classes where some have all and others have nothing) for liberty (not fear of persecution) and justice (not unlawful arrest and detainment) for all (not just a select few).
When will we have a government compiled of elected officials who take the oath of office to better their country and not their bank accounts and status of power? When will the voices of the American people be heard? When will we again realize the freedom our forefathers intended us to have? When will the citizens of this country stop moving the line in the sand backwards because they do not have the strength and courage of our founding fathers to stand up for what is right? When will we stop sending jobs overseas just so wealthy business owners can make more profit at the cost of our homes, jobs, and security? When will taxpaying American citizens be able rest assured that when faced with a life threatening emergency the medical needs of their families will be met without the risk of losing all they posses?
I fully understand the need to secure our safety from terrorists and those that would jeopardize our freedom. I also recognize that the greatest threat to that freedom is more likely to come from across our borders not from the citizens of this country, I have never heard an American speak out against this country except in frustration brought upon by the feeling that their voices are not heard and this is simply out of frustration. I believe all Americans are aware that no law will make everyone happy but, I also believe they accept the fact that compromises must be made for the greater good but, that those compromise should not and will not come at the cost of our freedom and rights as American Citizens in any capacity.
I think I can safely speak for the majority of the Citizenry of this country when I say we want the National defense Authorization Act repealed or at least rewritten to exclude military policing of our streets and at the very least, exclude natural born citizens. We do not deserve nor will we tolerate living in fear of persecution based on how we spend, what we store, or what we look like, we ask for nothing more and will accept nothing less than the rights our constitution guarantees to us. We the people will expend all reasonable and legal means to obtain this goal as peacefully as we can but in the end we will obtain our goal by any means necessary. The American people will not be subjugated. And we will have our voices heard or remove the officials whose job and duty is nothing more than to serve and represent the people.
The American people are legally allowed to do or say anything they wish provided that action does not infringe upon the rights or civil liberties of other citizens and adheres to local and constitutional laws of the United States of America and to persecute or question ones loyalty simply based looks, spending habits, food or defensive stores is a treasonous action and will not be tolerated by the American people,
In conclusion I will say I never thought the time would come in which I would feel such urgent need to compose a letter such as this, and never have I imagined that doing so could cost me my freedom and yet, for the good of my Country and my American brothers and sisters, and in the spirit of the great patriot Thomas Paine do I type. God help us!
God Bless America!
Sincerely, Anthony Joseph Nagurski III
