The world is currently witnessing a rapid awakening in terms of the way us humans are choosing to be in relationship with our environment. We are fast realising that if we continue on this obvious path of global destruction we will create a life of struggle for our own personal, imminent future as well as for the generations to come..
For me one of the tragedies of our time has been our mindless increase in our consumerism of plastic, almost as though we live in a throw-away society. Of course there is no away...
Plastic is vital in so many ways but there remain increasingly more ways in which we can begin to minimise our supposed 'need' for this material. My most obvious choice comes in the form of the PLASTIC SHOPPING BAG.
Through your active petitioning against the allowance /distribution of these bags in our many retail stores around South Africa, I do believe we will create a powerful voice which will be heard by our government and ensure that they do the right thing and ban the bag here in our beautiful country. Others have done it before us. SA can, and must, follow suit!
We the undersigned urge the environmental decision makers of South Africa to take heed of the many voices in our rainbow nation that have spoken up in support of the
total banning of the plastic shopping bag.The degradation to the environment that people have caused, and continue to cause, throught their ignorant disposal of plastic bags is well documented. We believe that a total banning of the plastic shopping bag in all major retail stores and the encouragement of alternatives will go a VERY long way to addressing
many of the environmental issues we face as a nation. Our environment is our heritage, we must do whatever it takes to uphold that with integrity.
