Return the Chagos Islands to the Chagos People

Target:
UK Government & US Military
Sponsored by:
The Chagos Islanders were callously removed from their pacific islands in the 1970's, when a deal between the UK (who owns the islands) & US meant the islands were to become a luxury, US military base. The people were dumped into dire poverty where to this day, they remain.

The removal of the Chagos people from their homeland was an illegal act; international law was ignored as UK government ministers conspired to propagate the myth that the islands inhabitants were a "non-indigenous" workforce. As if to add insult to injury, the people were in the 80's offered a paltry £3,000 compensation. However when they signed for that sum, they unwittingly signed away their rights to return to their homeland.

The majority of the islanders couldn't even read - their signatures are merely thumbprints. Many who caught wind of the scam simply refused to accept the "compensation".

Time after time, court rulings upholding the Chagos islanders rights to return home, have been refused by UK courts; the Chagos people remain embittered and trapped in poverty. It's up to the caring & compassionate amongst us to stand up on their behalf and demand that the UK government grant the islanders their right to return home. For more information see the online video 'Stealing a Nation' presented by John Pilger.

Please accept that the removal of the Chagos islanders from their homeland was a brutal and illegal act, which was founded on lies and disinformation that conspired to deny the people their human rights. We, the undersigned, humbly request that you make amends for this travesty and allow the islanders to return home.

An utter disgrace.

Why is nothing being done about this? How can the people in a position of responsibility able to sleep at night? You betray the trust we place in you to lead our world.

If another country's government had perpetrated such a despicable crime against anyone, let alone its own citizens we would probably have discontinued diplomatic relations with them. The duplicity, deceit, dishonesty and complete absence of humanity is shocking in a government that claims to be a leading light for democracy in the world.

The fact that the crime against the Chagossian people took place long ago is no excuse for not making reparation now. To not do so illustrates that we are essentially living in a lawless society. Were not Nazi war criminals pursued and brought to justice long after the attrocities they had committed had taken place? The lack of political will to see justice done is appalling.

The UK Government needs to do everything it can to enable the Chagos people to return home.
