Let's Fight Global Warming Together

Reverse Global Warming With Biochar

Target:
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
Sponsored by:

Dear Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

Trees and Plants suck up CO2 as they grow, but then release it as they die and rot. However, we can prevent 50% of the CO2 being released when they die by turning the plants into biochar, which is fine grained carbon which can be buried in the ground where it remains safe for thousands of years. Pre Columbian Amazonian Indians have kept CO2 safe for over 2,500 years, which is a length of time that we must talk about when safely storing CO2. Biochar is a soil improver and cuts down on the need for fertilizers, reduces methane and nitrous oxides from the ground, filters out pollutants, and retains water. Quickly degrading rainforest soils caused by slash and burn farming can be kept fertile by the use of biochar. Crops are more abundant, grow faster, and longer.

What we have to do, with this plan, is to put a charge on all goods and services equal to the amount of money it will take to make enough biochar to neutralise the CO2 emissions of the goods. This money would have to go to a central fund to pay for neutralisation of the CO2 produced. Provided that the trees and plants are harvested sustainably and the biochar is buried in the areas of participating countries where the soil is the poorest, the quality improvement of the soil will increase the amount of food produced, and thus increase the wealth of the poorest.

The world’s soils hold more organic carbon than that held by the atmosphere and oceans combined and we would like you to inform all governments and political parties that Global Warming is reversible in this simple and cheap way.

it seems so simple and straight forward. My concern is that in a 3 month period only 52 people signed this petition. Copenhaguen meeting is only 6 month ahead.... millions of signatures on such a promizing issue should be raised ....

In addition to the benefits of Biochar. Creating bio char produces a combustible gas that can be used to power combustion engines. During the second World War many vehicles in Europe were powered by "producer gas" or syngas. This same fuel could be used to run generators today. Many of the areas in Africa that would benefit the most from the agricultural benefits of biochar would also benefit from the use of a small local power generator.

most of the worlds soil is dead through use of pesticides /herbisides we kill the very organisms that supply our food with its food,,,we need to stop and think , with oil based fertilises feeding the majority of crops because we have killed the organisms that would naturally fertilise the crop and with peak oil prices inevitable we face MASS FAMINE........... WE NEED YOU TO INVEST IN SOIL in research to the beneficial organisms to the workings of the eco systems and to how many nutrients are missing from our diet because of the present faming tchniques....it can not wait. it can not be smothered in red tape you need to act NOW... we need to appreciate that we need eco systems not just oil and machines ..... we are at a time in history where you mr banki - moon will be a marker in history of our planet..... there is so much information out here i only hope you are well advised by those who are not in this for financial gain, but by those who have given there lifes work to the earth ,please look at permaculture at soils and there natural eco systems and at the food we now have and all its affects on health /on rd miles and on our depleting water systems .. please be the change .... be a great leader mr ki-moon

I think this is an amazing idea! I live in Central Illinois, which is a heavy farming area. I have seen huge amounts of acreage destroyed by an incorrect mixture of chemical fertilizer, and if we had other means of boosting the soil, these type of accidents could be prevented.

Hi Andi, I feel we must make bio-char and give it to the farmers and gardners. You think we can come to-gether and start some thing on these lines? Talking and teaching is okay; 99% of the people will listen to you and forget after some time! If immidiate supply is ready; at list 20% of our listners will impliment it. Contact me by e-mail (I am in process of shifting from postal address given here)

Please listen to the Biochar message. It might give us a bit more time to stop global warming by locking up carbon in the soil.

Biochar holds a lot of promise but we must be careful about how we implement it. We don't want a repeat of the corn ethanol fiasco or cutting down rainforests to plant oil palms or soy crops for biodiesel, with a 25+ year turn around to realize a carbon gain. Crops grown simply to sequester carbon cannot contribute to food shortages or displace other carbon sinks. Let's embrace this technology carefully and thoughtfully until we have a thorough understanding of how it works. Dan Tefft TreeBanker

Give us this chance to help heal this beautiful world. Biochar technology is a key element ,in the foundation of the new sustainable infrastructure we need, to make that possible.
