RHD

Target:
Samoans in and outside Samoa
I am not supporting the RHD change. I am really against it.
But, I have a question to your newspaper. Is the media coverage of all Samoan newspaper, radio news, and television reaching out to all parts of Upolu, Savai%u2019i, Apolima, Manono and American Samoa?
I believe that communications of any kind should be reached and be understood by every single Samoan on the island and abroad. I also feel that the communications should both be in Samoan and the English Language.
Our Samoan language is very important to the majority of our Samoan parents, grandparents, great-grandparents the elderly, and especially the non-English speaking Samoans.
Each Samoan has the right to stand up and have a say to this RHD change issue. This change is affecting everyone and every generation in future. This change has already painfully touched most Samoans then, now and years to come.
It is not so much about the change. It is how the Prime Minister and His Cabinet passed it into law without giving the people of Samoa a say. Communication is very important here and the Prime Minister has failed to do that. He doesn%u2019t give a damn about Samoa as a country. He only cares about himself and his reputation. Not from the majority of the Samoan people but of a select few whom the Prime Minister is trying to impress.
The Prime Minister was voted for and elected by the majority of the Samoans.
Maybe it is time for a change of power.I feel that the Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa%u2019ilele Malielegaoi should resign or step down. This is not the kind of Prime Minister that I would want to lead Samoa and its people.
A Prime Minister must be fair, nonbiased and must listen to what people want.

A little common sense goes a long way. This proposal to switch obviously lacks it. From what I can see and read, the country is practically begging for the PM to reconsider but these cries are going by unheard. Unfortunately, ignorance is not always bliss and I just pray that the lives of our innocent people in Samoa who are against this move, will be preserved and sustained if the government decides to proceed with this ridiculous concept. God only knows what is going to happen now!!!

I believe The Government is doing more than the right thing about introducing the changes in Samoa of new laws about RHD. I strongly support The Government with their decision to change from LHD to RHD. The People of Samoa need to understand that they will benefit from better infrastructure, which will also create more employment opportunities for People in Samoa in the near future. I believe The Prime Minister in Samoa is doing what is best for People of Samoa and understands better about the changes which they are trying to introduce in Samoa. People of Samoa need to trust and support their Government and believe in people who represent Samoa! Rome was not build in one day! These changes will also bring better economical growth with great opportunities in Samoa and will prove to be the correct and wise decision made by The Prime Minister in Samoa today!

I am totally against the RHD switch. Arguments from the PM and some from Australia are that the switch will prove beneficial for us in the long run, it will be cheaper, it won't take long for people to adapt and so on with all this other rubbish. I have been living in New Zealand for 3 years now and sometimes still mistake the cars to be coming from the other side of the road and more than once, avoiding a fatal accident by just. It's not that I'm a bit loose in the head or anything, but it's just that I'm accustomed to just the opposite. So what I'm trying to say is, if I can't fully adapt to the RHD within the past 3 years, how can the PM expect the people of Samoa to adapt in 3 (or so) days.HA!..and you all thought I had a few loose screws. I mean do you, Mr. PM, really want to gamble with the lives of the people that you are meant to serve? Or is giving them a quick death part of the service? This is not a threat, but we have seen coup's and rebellions within our Pacific island neighbors. I worry that something like this may happen in ours. Democracy means governed by the people for the people. Not 'by the PM; for the PM'. Democracy. A word we take for granted is now losing its meaning. I guess its the new way of spelling communism.

I DO NOT SUPPORT THE RHD SWITCH, i feel it is a TOTAL waste of Samoan Hard earned money. the estimation for the cost of the switch lies in the BILLIONS, itll cripple our economy. our wages are ridiculous and people are struggling to make ends meet as it is, govt says "famillys overseas give ur relatives here in samoa a car." for what? more bills?? the cost of maintaining your car (as a result of ware and tare due to our poor roads or just because your car is old and needs work done to it every once in a while)and petrol is too expensive.if Samoa really wants RHD vehicles from overseas, fine let them come through, my problem with that is for our safty. However changing the road sides is what i am STRONGLY against. there is no reason why we should do that, we've been fine driving on the left side since cars were introduced in Samoa. to me its just such a stupid idea, if the switch does occur the majority of us will be driving on the wrong side of the roads for the next 10years minimum. with the cost of living increasing plus donations to churches and faalavelaves, and the cost of our LHD vehicles decreasing combined with the very low wages we get, who can afford a nice RHD vehicle with the same quality or better as what they've got rite now? my point is Samoans dont NEED to switch to the other side of the road, if you want to use transportation as a an issue Samoa should take public transportation more seriously, funnel some money into that. Farmers? the government should help them get their buisness succesful because thats how most people in the village with no jobs can make a good living. it seams like all we have for them are workshops, people dictating this and that but doing nothing to REALLY help them. reminds me of the saying "all words, no action". As for govt's point that family from overseas will help send cars to reletives here in Samoa, i feel sorry for them, they already send hundreds to their familly here in Samoa ( which is obvious mainly during christmas by the loooonnnggg lines at the money transfer offices and by the release of the remittances estimation by govt earlier this year) , now they are expected to spend hundreds ontop of that to pay for cars, shipping and duty? how can they move foward if we at home keep pulling them back?

for your information, i 100% support the RHD switch for this would enable us to assist our developing families in the village in terms of transportation by providing them with economical fuel usage vehicles, having support RHD drive thus makes us completely support the RHD switch, as RHD drive and RHS switch logically go together but saying to bring in RHD cars but against the SWITCH is totally OFF BEAM, another excellent reason i support RHD is having our people familiarize with RHD driving so when they come oveseas they will no longer depend on us especially people who are working for driving instead they will all be masters; and to conclude i STRONGLY, HIGHLY AND FULLY SUPPORT AND RECOMMEND RHD VEHICLES with RHS(SWTICH).....

I wonder why in this world more than 100 countries, only a few countries such as Japan, Australia, New Zealand, UK, South Africa, Tonga, Fuji, they are RHD countries, all of them put together less than 5%, other 95% countries they are LHD, and also our Samoa, we have more than 17,000 vehicles they are LHD, around 2,000 RHD, why we need switch from LHD to RHD? why? How much Japanese give the dirty money to PM? why we do not follow these big countries, such as USA, Canada, France, Germeny, China, they are LHD, most countries in Europe, America, they are LHD, we are keeping on LHD, we can get more support from other countries, and our people we have more choices for our vehicles, we can keep moving ahead to our good life. WE DO NOT NEED THIS RHD!

I DO NOT SUPPORT THIS RHD SWITCH....there is going to be more cars in samoa and the cost of petrol will also rise...so how can the people of samoa expect to fill up there cars???call our loved one in nz or australia to send us money to fill up our cars... oh i forgot more cars to come in samoa more money for the government the reason poor samoan people will have to pay more at the customs so that they can realease there cars .... have a good day samoa

Well, its either hes after the duty taxes, or the taxes on petrol (increase in petrol consumptions) as the cost of petrol is gone off the roof. But i dont think families in NZ or Australia can afford another car for Samoa as the costs of cars in those two countries are much more expensive than those from the US, and our Samoans in NZ and Australia are struggling as well.

Maybe we can get the Head of State to put an end to this outrage. It's sad that elected politicians refuse to take advice from the people who voted them into office.

I totally disagree with this RHD issue. Obviously, the PM may have lost his common sense in which God gave him to lead our country with honest, respect, righteous, faithfully, justly etc... The people of Samoa didn't elect you to become a dictator, also let me remind you one more time, if the majority of Samoan is against this RHD thing then keep in your tiny little mind that their is a consequence. Where is your conscious at, why not consider the cry of the elders, matais, business people, and be a fair leader. Halt the misleading of your own people to something you yourself is gaining from. How can you????? Don't we all know since we were little kids that "SAMOA IS FOUNDED IN GOD", unfortunately you may have forgotten that all of a sudden. The conspiracy act needs to be stop before it's too late. It was so wrong for the people of Samoa to elect you as our leader. God Bless my beloved country of Samoa, just keep in mind that God is a miracle God.

I've posted so many comments in the editorial and the anti-rhd site about this issue and my mind hasnt change. Im still against it and I hope other Samoans abroad will show support against the anti-rhd. I dont have a problem with the rhd- vehicles but changing the side of the road to travel is nonsense.

What is interesting is that the PM is making his economic policy based on car buying behavior of Samoan overseas. I know the PM is a smart economic planner, but I did not know he also holds psychic power. What is scary is the nonchalant statements by the PM using his anecdotal experience to support such a massive change in our country. This is the type of attitude, misguided ambition and arrogance of power that will create unrest in our country (eg. HRPP own former MPs -Leafa and Toi to murder one of its own

The Prime Minister in Samoa has lost his mind. Obviously someone (or some country) is lining his pockets with money & giving him gifts to bribe him in to making such a foolish & ridiculous decision as changing the roads in Samoa. There's more important iss use in Samoa to be fighting over & spending money on other than the side of the road you drive on. How about Mr Prime Minister instead of throwing money away to such a worthless cause that will in NO way be beneficial to Samoa & it's people you concerntrate on the important things in life for your people. Education for kids. I've been to Samoa many times & I am saddened to see the children who walk around downtown Apia peddling goods like coconuts etc trying to make money where they can to help their families with money so they can eat. Why don't you build government run schools that provide FREE education & make it mandatory for children to attend. Help give the next generation to come an opportunity for a good future. Help families in Samoa who are struggling & need some help. Provide medical care & health services to our people who can't afford to pay. Mr Prime Minister there's so much more you could be doing with all that money you are going to throw away if you do in fact go ahead with your RHD changes. Hope you will do what's right.

Invest on our childrens education, things that have values, they are our future. They become doctors, lawyers, teachers, business owners, engineers, computer programer etc. Theres so many little ones out there selling ili, ula, sei, ato.etc, outside hotels, restaurants, stores at night, when they suppose to be home with there families doing afiafi (lotu) doing home work, update their skills. what do those second hand cars bring but more expenses to the families. that $1.8 billion (Dec/21/2007 page 2)bottom left can be used in many things, open more business for people to work, need more technical institute, get more medicine and more and better equipment for the hospital, fix and expand the road, put on drainage and sewage. Build more senior citizen home, program like low income families, changes are good, but not that dangerous and critical change. work from what we already have in hand. There's a saying "Eazy said than done" What the PM wants to do is not a one night thing, Ia faamanuia tele Le Atua isi o tatou atunuu pele, Vaivase Tuimalealiifano Maualaivao Long Beach California, USA

The road code should not be changed. If government comes up with such an unreasonable and irrational scheme, we should not allow this to happen only because they were voted in. The abuse of power from the PM and Co has been a long time coming.

I disagree with the RHD proposal becoz it is not right/fair and the reasons given for it by the PM are very weak and stupid. Samoans living in NZ & Australia are already struggling financially. So how can they afford to hire-purchase another vehicle for families in Samoa. Many families in Samoa who don't own cars don't have anybody who's licensed to drive a car. Does this mean they'll learn how to drive using the new car ? Of the PM's notion that village people need cars to go to the plantation, i tell you that's another fallacy. Once village people get their so-called new cars, they'll head straight for Apia but not to the plantation. Thus causing a lot of traffic jams etc. The PM's reasons are so unconvincing and not well researched you get the feeling something more sinister is behind this sudden and inconsiderate push to change from LHD to RHD. What pisses me off is the very people who voted HRPP into power are the ones now complaining. HRPP has corrupted the whole constitution of the country and it's about time Samoans back home wake up and change the government. The PM or HRPP does not own the country. Even if PM decides to go ahead with this change, if the majority of the people continue to drive on the side as it is now, the govt can't do anything.

First of all Samoans outside of Samoa should be outraged that these pompous politicians feel it is our duty to supply the country with vehicles. Second of all is Samoa the only country not feeling the effects of Global Warming? Why are we going to import old cars that will release more carbon monoxide into the ozone??? We for sure will be one of the first to sink below sea level. Australia, don't say that we don't understand the issue. The issue here is that the government is bullying Samoans around to appease their hunger for power. Actions like this will always keep us catergorized as a third world country. Our greatest import is remittances from overseas Samoans who are left to feel guilty for the poor folks in Samoa! It would be nice if the government supported the creation of new jobs and businesses so the people of Samoa could be self reliant. Maybe, if the focus was on exports it would create jobs and they wouldn't come up with absurd ideas! Well, God bless Samoa! All in all, most of us want whats best for Samoa and I hope our people don't back down because that is what the PM is expecting! Merry Christmas!

I strongly support the goverment move to change..for the long term it will benefit Samoa and TIME will prove to these people who just signed off their names on this so called "stupid petition" foolishly and blindly march on something they don't even fully understand...yeah its good to exercise your democratic rights but its more important to understand the issue before having your name in this petition ...

It is just so sad to have our politicians not standing up against this law as it is obviously is unacceptable by more than 33,000 people here in Samoa. I have already signed in the petition that was presented to parliament on Monday 17th December and was also proud to be a part of the march. I would like to feel safe in this country as it should always be. SAFETY FIRST, SAMOA FIRST!!!

IN full 100% against the RHD and supported what you have done according to your website! PM is just trying to impressed the Japanese and they are doing to Samoa. PM is also controlling everything in the Government according to the looks and the things that are going on right now in Samoa. Its kind a too fast in his decisions and too too early for the switch. THANK YOU.
