City of Rocky Mount Utilities

Rocky Mount Utility Petition (Lower the Rates)

Target:
City of Rocky Mount Utitity Customers
Sponsored by:
The Rocky Mount Utitlites are outrageous and need to be lowered. We do not have a choice to get our power from Progress Energy, so we have to buy our electric from the City of Rocky Mount. I enjoy living in the city, but the electric and gas rates are too high. We the citizens of Rocky Mount want our gas and electric rates lowered and want them to be comparative to Progress Energy. Many residents electric bills are almost more than their mortgage payment each month. (Mine is one of them) If there is a law for Price Gouging, then this matter should be addressed and investigated as such. The City of Rocky Mount has to buy their electricity from NCEMPA (American Public Power Association, American Public Gas Association and Electricities).   I feel if we had a choice, the citizens of Rocky Mount would choose a diffferent provider for our utilities. Now they are talking about another price increase in 2009 after we already had one in 2008. Please reply to this petition. If I can get 1000 people to respond, I will go to the next step, but I am young, energetic, and motivated, so I am willing to try to get our voices heard.  I need everyone to help get our voice heard.  Please sign this petition.  Comment your feelings.  Tell everyone you know that cares about our town's wellness to sign the petition as well.

Here are some very interesting Numbers from one of the recent blogs on the Telegram Page:

Progress Energy,
Nashville electric prices are; 9.67c July-Oct Kwh
8.67c Nov- June Kwh (A decrease)

Rocky Mount- 12.91c Kwh. all year long.

If you need to know more about ElectriCities look at these sites.

and
http://www.electricities.com/index.htm

ElectriCities is a not-for-profit organization that is financed through membership fees and dues, as well as through rate and service revenue and tuition from training programs and workshops. Rocky Mounts annual due is $46,046. It is just interesting to look at this.

If anyone is interested in helping me in your communities please email me at Dink1977@suddenlink.net. I have made copies of the petition so that we can also get written signatures on this matter. I will be starting to get written signatues this weekend. If you are interested in helping me by getting signatures in your development please contact me and I can get a copy to you.

As of February 1, 2009 a 4% increase will take affect on our electric. It is time for a change. Something has to be done.

Our public officials just don't get it. WE NEED INCENTIVES to grow Rocky Mount. Take a look around we are not heading in the right direction. We need better schools (currently our county ranks one of the lowest in amount of spending per child in the state). So why are we not moving forward with the new high school again??? We need to lower utilities. People even outside of our area have heard about the high utilities here. With old run down schools and high utilities what incentives do we give people and industries to move here? When you ask where the jobs are think about this.

I am extremely grateful to find other citizen who are sick and tired of the outrageous amount of money we have to spend in order to stay warm. Winter is quickly approaching and here we go again. It's sad to have to choose to stay warm or eat.

As a REALTOR that services the Rocky Mount city area, I am getting more and more calls from people asking me to help them find housing OUTSIDE the CORM utility district. They pay double the taxes (city & county) and cannot afford double the utility bills, too! I do NOT live in the CORM, but my family does, so this also affects me on a personal level. Maybe when there are no more people left in the city to pay these outrageous bills, something will be done. In the meantime, thanks CORM for sending me the business!

Evidently I am not the only one who feels that our utility rates are beyond OUTRAGEOUS!!! any time I talk to anyone about Rocky Mount Utilities, they tell me that they feel sorry for us, because of the unbelievably high rates. We should have a choice.

My utility bill for July 2009 was $978.15. It is a true shame that 40% of our payments go to pay a debt incurred by ElectriCities years ago. Why can't we have another choice besides this terrible "non-profit" monopoly?

Thank God somebody is trying to get these rates lowered!! Its ridiculous that we're paying so much, and there going to keep jacking up the prices bc we have to pay or lights out!! Now I thought that was called a monopoly, am I wrong?!?!

It is obvious that Progress Energy can provide the same amount of power at a much lower rate to its customers. It looks like it's time for the city of Rocky Mount to step down and let someone who can get the job done take over. ...plain and simple

ElectriCities continues its excessive spending and nothing is being done. And we cannot even get answers because they block us.

It's sad when the local utilites company charges more than a mortgage payment per month. The economy is bad enough as it is and the utilities is ripping people off. My dad has Progress Energy right outside of Rocky Mount and pays about 1/4 my average bill and he has a house 4 times bigger than mine. Somethings gotta give!

The impact of the utilities has been awful. I pay as much for my rent as I do for my utilities. I relocated from NY and I had thought they were bad!! As a nurse I am seeing more and more hospital admissions of people who are paying their utilities instead of their needed medications.People WILL die because of these choices...who will take accountability for that?

I have lived in Rocky Mount the majority of my live. I'm at the point of if I was able to moving out of the city limits of Rocky Mount I would. It's a sad day when your utility bill is more than your mortgage.

I am pleased that someone is addressing this issue of the highest rates for electricity that I have ever paid in my 67 YEARS. I have live in Wilmington, Raleigh, Nags Head, and Virginia Beach, Va. and our Rocky Mount utilities are just unreasonable. I have often heard that the city of Rocky Mount could not pay their bills if it were not for the utility bills from its customers. Could this be true?

I work in Wilson, NC I made the choice to live in Rocky Mount. I could've decided to live in Nashville,Greenville, Raliegh, or Wilson, but I picked Rocky Mount because I love Nash County. So please decide to decrease the utilities.

The Rocky Mount utilities are just mind blowing. To the point I can not even put it into words. I feel that the city council could care less about the struggle the citizens are going through. They tried to make it seem like they care by giving these little town meetings and still nothing is done. I feel like it is a waste of your time and breath until the citizen take action they are going to keep playing the cat and mouse game with the citizen of Rocky Mount.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN, I TOO, FEEL THE UTILITY BILL IS OUTRAGEOUSLY HIGH. IT IS ALMOST THE PRICE OF MY MORTGAGE PAYMENT. RECENTLY I WAS TURNED OFF (WINTER MONTHS) FOR NOT PAYING THE FULL AMOUNT. MY BILLS HAVE BEEN 418.00 DEC 429.OO JAN 448.00 FEB. I COULD ONLY AFFORD TO PAY 300.00 EACH MONTH AND WAS STILL DISCONNECTED. WHEN I SPEAK TO MY FAMILY IN OTHER STATES NONE OF THEM HAVE BILLS THAT OVERPRICED. PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS ISSUE. IT IS NOT FAIR TO THE PEOPLE OF ROCKY MOUNT SINCERLY KIZZIE BROMELL

If this does not work, there's power in numbers, let's get together and boycott the Rocky Mount utilities. We don't have to worry about utilities if we don't use it.

I am a single mother of four, not on social service trying to make a way. I brought my home three years ago and now with these enormous electric bills, I may have to go into forclosure because my light bill is higher than my mortgage. My average bill is $300.00 and now it was raised to $574.00, its outrages. We voted the city council in with all those phoney campaigns for change, I didn't know change was going to be this expensive.

My utility bill went from $449.00 to $703.00. Why should we have to be punished because the city did not read our meters during Christmas and when it was obviously TOO COLD for them to be out? These people ride around in brand new trucks all day long that we are paying for. Do you ever see a truck stopped somewhere and the folks actually working? Most of the time they don't even enter your yard to read the meter they hold up some kind of gizmo that supposedly reads it from the street. We are being raped on a monthly basis by the City on Demise.

I have already mailed my letter to the city council, the utility department, senators, governor, and some representatives, plus the Telegram. I was the one who stated that we shouldn't pay our bills for a couple months and see what the city does. They can't shut the whole city down without consequences on their part. I still say we all get together and do that. Also in my letter I sent my bill for the council to pay it because apparently they have the money since they approved an increase. Oh and why don't they take the so-called money they put aside to "help" customers and put it towards this so-called debt they keep talking about? It's not like they actually use it to help customers because you can only sign up at a certain time. That doesn't help me right now. This bill is higher than my car payment and more than half of what my mortgage is. I am outraged and I refuse to pay my bill. Actually, not really refuse because when you don't have the money to pay it, then I guess it's not really refusing it's more like, I CAN'T PAY IT!

My last bill was over a thousand dollars, we keep the heat low and program our zones even lower when were not at home. I am thankful, we can pay it (for now), but what about all the other hardworking folks that have to make a decision on what bill they can pay and what bill will just have to be late. With our county's unemployment rate on the rise and our nation's economic downturn, I employ our county officials to lower our electric rates, not raise them.
