RUAHINES THREATENED: Stop the destruction!

RUAHINES THREATENED: Stop the destruction!

Target:
TrustPower, Inc.
Sponsored by:

RIGHT NOW, plans are underway that will devastate and permanently change the Ruahines ranges, including the Waitahora, Puketoi, and Tararua ranges. These plans will ravage the exceptional beauty of these untouched mountains, so much so that the blow to this pristine wilderness and loss of habitat for many native species of birds and animals will alter these peaks forever.

What are these plans?

Wind power. Wind power, which, on first glance, seems innocuous enough. But, as we speak, major changes are being made regarding the wording to the Policy on Environmental Heritage, of the Tararua District Council, from its current protective status to that which lets companies such as Genesis Energy, Trustpower, Meridian Energy, and Mighty River Power to forever and irreversibly alter the landscape of these ranges. As we speak, a policy that comes up for review once every ten years is literally being put up for debate to the citizens of New Zealand less than a month before it is to be closed for objection. We must act, and we must act quickly.

The Threats and Consequences of Wind Farming
Trustpower, Inc., maintains that wind farms contribute to the economic well being of the district and pushes to recognize the economic benefits of wind farms and the development and maintenance of generation facilities. But Trustpower does not recognize or address the four ranges and the protection of the skyline. Nor does Trustpower speak to the following facts:

- Entire species of birds are threatened, due to the (70 meter) blades of the wind towers.

- Probable erosion into creeks and springs would likely destroy fish and other aquatic life abiding in these waters.

- Plant species are in danger, due to the consequent widespread human presence, herbicides, manufacturing of roads, building sites and power lines, and windmill tower stands.

- Herbicides threaten all forms of wildlife, which would be used to keep roads, power lines, buildings, and tower surrounds free of re-growth, tree saplings, and other plant life.

- The introduction of non-native species that would inevitably be present on the wheels of the earth-moving machinery and other vehicles coming into this pristine environment from the outside world. This would introduce potentially invasive species of plants not native to the area, causing severe ecosystem damage and wiping out whole species of plants.

- The noise pollution from windmill blades, which would force wildlife to flee the area. Loss of habitat is one of the biggest destroyers of wildlife, not to mention that species of animals would move from their territories into other territories where both groups would have to compete for food and shelter.

- As of today we know of no environmental impact studies that have been done in this area in regards to the introduction of large scale wind farming in these mountains.

- The destruction of a pristine wilderness area is a stab to the heart of the earth, for people now, and for future generations. It is a part of the natural heritage of New Zealand, and, like a protected forest, or a work of art in a museum, we must work to preserve it. There are very few places on earth that remain as serene and wild. If policies such as this pass, soon there will be none left.

Solar Power as an Alternative
Solar power as an alternative source not only provides 50-75% of hot water, but also offers an inexpensive, hospitable, and beneficial form of power. The use of solar power as an alternative must be looked into further, in order to discern what is best in this particular region. The time frame that the companies have given to override the policies we are facing leaves little to no time for debate in this area.

No one knows how efficient the wind towers might be, and how many are needed to provide the necessary power to sustain the area. No one knows how much money consumers would ultimately have to spend, all the while gazing at a ruined landscape.

Please take a moment and read the petition below. And then sign. The Ruahine ranges are in your hands. Do the right thing, and save them from certain destruction.

Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in where nature may heal and cheer and give strength to the body and soul...

I take offense to Trustpowers assumption that the people of New Zealand want wind power to proliferate on the Ruahines ranges. The existing policy must be stringently maintained and continue in perpetuity to uphold the environmental protection of this mountain range. The untouched beauty of these mountains is our heritage and our childrens heritage.

I say yes to continued research and exploration of substitute sources of energy, such as solar power, as viable and financially feasible alternatives.

I say no to the invariable destruction of these ranges, and no to Trustpower and the other wind companies, which propose to charge blindly ahead in changing existing policies in order to line their pockets. The Ruahines ranges are worth much more than a quick glance. Once devastated, they are irreplaceable. They are, indeed, priceless.

These mountain ranges, wilderness and semi wilderness areas need to be preserved for our children and to nourish our souls. Buffer zones are also very important when planning. Wildlife is also another consideration, along with soil and water values. We have to stop taking these values for granted and realise that the wonder and uniqueness of what we have is in danger of being lost forever. I whole heartedly urge the Tararua District Council to plan wisely to not only preserve our heritage, but to improve it in terms of restoration ecology

I agree that some diversification of power supply is needed but already we have a massive eyesore in the Manawatu Gorge and to give the same treatment to the beautiful Ruahine Ranges would be very sad indeed.

As we are caretakers of the land for the next generation,I do not wish to see the area visually polluted by windmills. Future generations deserve to have the opportunity to enjoy it also. While realising we need more sustainable energy this is NOT the solution!

New Zealand has some of the last wild and beautiful places left on earth. We should never let go of these places! Ruahines are one of such places, and I commit to make an effort to get as much people as I can to sign this important petition.

I can't believe that power companies can be so backward.(Well, I can, really!) Windmills??? Think dams, think solar, think steam bore, think nuclear!!! Anything but windmills!! They produce a miniscule amount of our total power production. One windmill is a novelty, two are moderately interesting, any more are a scabious blight on our landscape and visual proof of the venality of big business. It is not PROGRESS or best practice when enforcement of one company's greed is visited upon a resistant population. The families of the early settlers who have kept the Waitahora Valley pristine and the dream alive for all of us to enjoy deserve better.

The Puketoi Ranges are an outstanding natural feature and must therefore be protected and preserved. The proposed project will result in permanent changes to the landscape and skyline, through construction of roads and installation and operation of wind turbines. The surrounding environment, including land, waterways, cultural heritage, indigenous species, lifestyles, existing businesses and roading will be impacted to an extent that breaches the Resource Management Act. The Puketoi Ranges are important to tangata whenua (local iwi and hapu). Maori values and concerns have not been adequately catered for in the resource consent application. No cultural study has been conducted prior to the application being made. The amenity value of the area affected will be destroyed which breaches the Resource Management Act. The local community will be subject to ongoing visual (including shadow flicker), noise, vibration and the subsequent health effects. In some cases the turbines are within a distance of residences that has been considered unacceptable by other NZ Councils and overseas countries. The local and wider community will be affected by the transmission of power from the wind power site. While up to 110kV lines are permitted activity under the council plans, there is a significant enough possibility that 220kV lines will be used (referred to in Part B, section 4 of the application) to require the inclusion of thorough transmission options analysis and plans in the resource consent application. The wider Dannevirke community will receive very little in benefits from the project. The small amount of revenue on offer to Dannevirke locals for the very short term construction period does little to offset the permanent desecration of our district. I seek the following decision from the consent authority: That Contact Energy Limited’s entire resource consent application is declined.

The health issues emerging from older wind farms in Britain, Europe and Australia are very concerning. We should not allow the big business energy companies to destroy our environment and our health for the sake of earning carbon credits from the government. There are other safe alternatives to producing power without allowing this to happen. Surely the novelty of having these enormous turbines blotting our beautiful landscape has worn off by now. It must stop.

I feel the proposed wind farm will forever be a burden to the community. The health and lifestyle of our clean green country is under a watchful eye world wide. Carbon credits are hardly worth the ruination of our beloved country side when there a more sustainable alternatives.

The Government of this country does not have the right, even if it has the power, to ignore the effects that it's ideas and policies have on the population, the environment, and / or the flora and fauna of any area, just so they can yet again "clip the ticket" and collect even more Tax, albeit under the guise of "Private Companies", when in fact they are, on the whole, nothing but Tax Payer funded, State Owned (in reality Tax Payer owned) Government Departments, whose principal reason for being is obviously to collect as much Revenue as possible for the Government.

We live in a beautiful and unique valley for both farming and its natural beauty which will be destroyed by the 150 metre tall windmills which will be only 1.6 km away from our boundary. One farmer's financial gain will be the loss of a whole district's way of life not to mention, business disruption.
