On July 17, 2008 Al Gore challenged America to produce 100% of our electricity from energy sources with zero carbon emissions - and to do so within 10 years.

Together sun-drenched Santa Monica can switch to using 100% clean electricity from the sun and other renewable sources by 2018 while saving on energy costs.

Urge Santa Monica to achieve 100% clean electricity by 2018.

We the undersigned urge Santa Monica to set a goal of 100% clean electricity by 2018 in order to reduce our community's greenhouse gas emissions and exposure to the rising costs of burning fossil fuels into the atmosphere.

Almost half of the electricity used in the United States still comes from coal, which of all our sources of electricity is the dirtiest - and America's single biggest source of global warming emissions.

Depending on coal to generate our electricity does not make sense for our health, our environment, or our economy.

Fortunately, in Santa Monica we have an abundance of clean energy from the Sun on our own roofs and parking lots. With existing state and federal rebates and incentives, solar electricity can result in immediate savings on energy costs.

We must act now to cap global warming emissions and require utilities to generate increasing amounts of clean, renewable energy.
