Save Adoptable & Treatable Animals in Lane Co., Oregon

Target:
Lane County Board of Commissioners & City of Eugene Mayor & Council

A true Save Adoptable & Treatable Animals (No-Kill) shelter can actually cost less to operate than a "catch and kill" shelter, due to broad community involvement and other factors. For a complete overview see  http://www.nokilladvocacycenter.org/.

There is a better way to run Lane County Animal Services (LCAS) by the continued and immediate implementation of the Save Adoptable and Treatable Animals Task Force (SAATA Task Force) recommendations, adopted by the Lane County Board of Commissioners.  http://www.lanecounty.org/Animals/documents/SAATF.pdf

THEREFORE:  We the people of Lane County, (and the world) strongly urge the Lane County Board of Commissioners (BCC) and the City of Eugene Mayor & Council to fund LCAS with appropriate funding, full staffing and full implementation of the Save Adoptable and Treatable Animals Task force report, based on Nathan Winograd's No-Kill Solution, and to replace current management with a SAATA (No-Kill) Director.

We further strongly urge full transparency, with complete staff and department accountability; and first and formost that all animals, volunteers, staff and community residents are treated humanely and respectfully.

Animals are not disposable. They all deserve to live and have a chance to find happy homes.

Iam in eugene every day and I own a red nose female pitbull dog and she is so quiet and loveable I just love her so much.I am currently using her as my theropy dog because I have problems waliking up and down stairs due to knee surgery that I had 9 months ago and I just didn't heal right.

If only more people would put time and donations into shelters, there would be no such need for euthanization. Let's make a stand for the fabulous furry live of our beloved companions!

I have been shocked anew each time I've dealt with Lane County Animal Services at how many animals they destroy. There have appeared to be NO OPTIONS when I have spoken with the supervising staff. Even when I took in a PG stray mom and asked they take the kittens, and I'd keep the mom -- they refused, instead killing mom and babies both. I believe healthy animals should be SAVED and given a SECOND CHANCE -- not destroying the animals because the people have been negligent and cruel!!!

Can't imagine life without my three rescued, adopted kitties. They are the sweetest and their love is unconditional. They each have their own personalities and the companionship is wonderful. I lead a very full life and my cats play a major part in it... I look forward to spending time with them daily.

This is a serious matter in which needs immediate help. There are so many animals that need homes and affection just like the pets whom are already so fortunate enough to have. We can pull together and make it possible for animals to not be put to death just because there is no room for them in a shelter. We need it to be possible for every last adoptable animal to have a chance to be loved by someone.

I think it is cruel to kill animals. What are we going to kill our foster kids just because there is something wrong with them or we cannot find a home fast enough???

A no-kill solution for Lane County makes economic as well as ethical sense. Domesticated animals depend on people for their safety and health, just as we depend on them for companionship. Domestic animals are not wild animals: They do not exist in a self-balancing natural system. We must be responsible to their needs as much as possible--not just when it's convenient for us. And because a no-kill shelter can actually cost less to operate than a "catch and kill" shelter, we should absolutely move in this direction. I strongly urge the Lane County Board of Commissioners and the City of Eugene Mayor & Council to give LCAS the resources it needs to become a no-kill shelter.
