This is a gut-wrenching photo of an alligator that was shot and killed. PLEASE help us save their habitat!!

Save Alligator Bayou

Target:
Governor Bobby Jindal, Ascension Parish President Tommy Martinez, the Ascension Parish Council,  Iberville Parish President Mitch Ourso add the Iberville Parish Council
I call on Iberville Parish President Mitch Ourso and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal to close the floodgate at Alligator Bayou and allow the water to reach 4-foot levels to reverse the ecological disaster that is now underway.

With the understanding that water levels in this fragile environment need to be maintained at a low 3.8 to 4.2 feet, I call on the parishes of Ascension and Iberville to dredge Alligator Bayou and Frog Bayou and to install a larger, more efficient floodgate that will properly evacuate floodwaters.

I am concerned about the devastation of the bayou ecosystem and the loss of its fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals. The alligators are being killed.  For the sake of the swamp and the people who appreciate its function and value, I implore you to take immediate action to save Alligator Bayou.

I am also concerned that the lack of proper water controls will result in disastrous flooding that could overtop hazardous waste pits and backwash into the basin to cause irreparable harm to life and property. For this reason, I urge you to dredge Alligator Bayou and Frog Bayou and to install a larger, more efficient floodgate.

Please listen to the people, save the animals and their ecosystem, and take immediate action to restore water levels to 3.8- to 4-foot levels - NOW!

I absolutely loved the faces of my grandchildren when I went with them on the alligator bayou tour. They learnded so much and I did also. It is a shame that they are even thinking of closing the waterway to the tours

This has been an incredible part of Louisiana culture. My nephews have memories of numerous trips that they hope to re visit with their own children. I, too, had hoped to share this experience with my own grandsons and am saddened that it is not possible.

It is very disheartening to see the animals that have died at Alligator Bayou due to this decision! We understand that tough decisions have to be made but the animals are suffering. A more thought through decision needs to be put into action immediately!

I hope someday soon to spend much more time in Louisiana. Preserving the natural habitat of long time inhabitants is very important to making the state the wonderful place I believe it is.

I was born in Louisiana, so therefore I am a native. There are several attractions in Louisiana, mainly the casinos'. I am now a parent and we all know that children cannot enjoy the casinos',but they do however, enjoy nature and sight-seeing. Taking away what Louisiana is really known for is not right. Not only will you destroy wildlife you are taking away the people's way of life and how they live.I guess a politican has never been raised by the swap, so who are you to judge what should be done with the ecosystem or our way of life. The people of the swamp live by the swap for food, this is culture. Something you should not take away.Tours for families that is what life is about, not your high class casinos'. Quality time with family is why people travel to your state to see the sites, hunting, and fishing.Isn't that why they call Louisiana The Sportsman Paradise? It will no longer be that if you take our swaps away...Thank-you.

A few years ago I visited Alligator Bayou as a field trip with my third grade class. It was by far one of the most memorable and educational field trips any of us had ever experienced. Our government should be ashamed of themselves for killing off our wildlife and Louisiana's heritage for their own selfish WANTS. Please rethink the destruction you are needlessly causing!

If you know me you know I am what they call a Damn Yankee.. Because I stayed. I am in Love with Louisiana because of its Heritage, Landscape, and love of the people. The two gentlemen that own Alligator Bayou Bar have been in business for quite a while.. in a place where most of us would have run the other way. But for our State to just cut them out, and distroy there business makes me want to cry. I can not imagine the loss of wildlife that has occured due to the drainage. Bring Back Alligator Bayou because it is the right thing to do.

I toured this amazing Alligator and wildlife refuge in May of 2008. I am shocked and saddened to learn that it is now completely destroyed because a greedy corporation lobbied the Louisiana government to have the land drained, the wildlife destroyed and the refuge left in tatters. One would think that after all Louisiana has been through with natural disasters affecting the state in the last few years, that wildlife sites, such as Alligator Bayou, would be safeguarded to protect the indigneous wildlife and promote the much needed tourism in the state. I pray that the the Louisiana government reverses this terrible decision. Wishing you all the best!
