Save Arizona State Parks

Please sign this petition to let the governor and state legislators of Arizona know that you want to keep the State Parks open.

Due to budget cuts, Arizona State Parks officials are proposing to shut down 13 State Parks. Four parks would close on Feb. 22, four on March 29 and five on June 3.

Tonto Natural Bridge near Payson, Red Rock near Sedona, Lost Dutchman near Apache Junction and Tombstone Courthouse in Tombstone are just a few of the parks proposed for closure.

As the officials and legislators consider this drastic measure, it is important they keep in mind how these closures would affect the economies of the towns nearest the parks. For many, the State Parks are a source of much-needed income as visitors to the parks will often stop to shop and eat in those towns on their way to or from the parks. Local economies will be hurt, more jobs will be lost if these parks are closed.

Our State Parks not only support local economies with dollars from local citizens, they are a draw to the state from visitors around the world. People visit and move to Arizona in part because of our unique topography and climate, to experience something that cannot be found anywhere else in this country. These parks are important to the statewide economy because they bring money to our state from visitors who spend their winters and vacations here.

Having access to our beautiful State Parks also makes Arizona attractive to businesses looking to locate to Arizona. They know that their employees are happier when they have access to the outdoors, especially given the length of time during the year we are able to visit these parks. A state so dependent upon their State Parks will send a negative message to local businesses and businesses considering locating here should those parks be closed.

And finally, these parks provide a place of respite to everyone: rich, poor, young, old, families, and individuals. Having access to these parks provides a place to leave behind the worries of life, even if only for a few hours. In times like these, when so many have lost their jobs, their homes, and in some cases, their families, the State Parks provide much-needed moral support to our citizens.

It has come to our attention that, due to budget cuts, there is a proposal to close 13 State Parks in Arizona.

Before agreeing to these proposals, please consider the value of the signatures found in this petition and the points listed below for keeping the parks open.

As you know, these closures will affect the economies of the towns nearest the parks.

The parks bring money to the state by bringing visitors here where they will sleep in our hotels, buy our souvenirs and eat in our restaurants, taking with them wonderful memories of a place so unique and welcoming that they return time and again with others who have heard about our parks. The parks are a cornerstone to our economy and without them we lose out on opportunities for job creation and income.

If that weren't enough, having access to our beautiful State Parks also makes Arizona attractive to businesses looking to locate to Arizona. They know that their employees are happier when they have access to the outdoors, especially given the length of time during the year we are able to visit these parks. A state so dependent upon their State Parks to draw in visitors and companies will send a negative message to local businesses and businesses considering locating here should those parks be closed.

In many ways, the parks are all we have when there is nothing else.

So please reconsider the proposal to shut down the parks and seek other ways of cutting the budget.

Thank you for your time.
