Save Clemson Sustainable Agriculture

Save Clemson Sustainable Agriculture

Target:
The Clemson University Community

The Clemson University Student Organic Farm is a USDA certified organic farm located on the University campus.  The farm encompasses 15 acres of agricultural land used for sustainable agriculture research, education and outreach programs and is one of the few USDA certified organic farms located on a university campus.  Its centralized location on campus gives it great potential for community involvement. Organic produce from the farm is available to the campus and local communities through the CSA (Campus Supported Agriculture) program to subscribed members, as well as at a Farmer's Market located at the Farm. The Farm provides university students the opportunity to get real-world experience working on a model diversified organic farming operation, and in a variety of other areas related to sustainability.

Since its inception in 2001 the Student Organic Farm has been self-supported through a combination of grants and market revenues. However a critical source of grant support was recently and unexpectedly withdrawn. This means that without additional support, all of the Farm operations, all associated research and education projects, and the market programs will be terminated.

We need to act NOW to ensure continued existence of the Student Organic Farm!  In recognition of the Farm's value to the Clemson community please show your support for this proposal to address the fundamental needs for continued farm operations.

These needs include:

-Retention of the Student Organic Farm in its entirety at the current location.

- Annual University funds to hire a full-time Farm Manager.

- Funding for needed infrastructure such as a storage facility and passive solar greenhouse.

- Community-based sustainable initiatives on the Clemson University Campus.

We appreciate your support!

Loosing the CU organic farm would have a negative impact on students, as well as, the community.

Let's keep Clemson's organic farm! It's a valuable educational resource and there are plenty of ways to increase revenue - perhaps a Community Supported Agriculture model would work.

Save the farm... it takes time for a farm to become certified organic. It will just be a waste if the progress that has been made is abandoned!

To all extents financially possible, this organic farm should be preserved. It embodies the future of the earth in its sustainability. While we are considering the posibility of global warming and its effects, which are heightened by the use of fertilizers and pesticides from the corporate industries which have led us to this impass, we should not then gut an effort to lead us to a way out of global warming. We started as an ag school and should continue to improve techniques and knowledge about SAFE food production

This farm is so important to the learning process of the ag students at the school and a unique way for Clemson to connect to the community on and off campus.

Please let the student organic farm continue to operate. The work they do is very important and they bring in profit from their sales of what they grow.

With the direction that our nation is heading, closing the Student Organic Farm would reflect rather negatively on Clemson as a Top 20 University. Being able to boast on something such as a student run organic farm is not only something that sets us apart from other universities, but also helps us support local business as well increase our commitment to healthier sustainability.

One of the best things about living in Clemson is the fantastic access to organic foods and products. Please don't take that away.

Clemson's history as an agricultural school, means that it should also lead in the organic field. Organic food demand is on the rise and it would be a great idea to get in and take advantage of that demand.

I have bought products from the farm. I was glad to support the system. The food was good and we need this kind of program in our educational system. The students need to know how to farm this way and the public needs to know the option exists.
