SAVE EMAN EL OBEDI -- VICTIM OF RAPE BY GADDAFI MILITIA

Eman is a courageous Libyan woman who broke the formidable walls of shame and fear, to speak publicly to reporters about being a rape victim, in a conservative environment where rape is a taboo subject. She risked not only her reputation but also her own life, to demand justice and the protection of her human rights. The Gaddafi media have already mobilized to assassinate Eman's character through smears and further publicized violations of her legal rights. And in the regime's known pattern of operating, Eman faces further torture, bodily harm and worse to come.

Your signing this petition is urgently needed for saving Eman and thereby empowering all Libyan civilians threatened by a tyrant who has openly declared war against them.

Mr. President, Mr. Vice President, Madam Secretary of State, Members of Congress, Human Rights Organizations:

Today we appeal to you on humanitarian grounds to send a clear and unmistakable message to Col. Muammar Gaddafi and his militia to release Eman El Obedi immediately and without any conditions.

Eman's story and desperate cry for help was carried on all the major news media.(1) Eman reported that she was raped and abused repeatedly by members of the Gaddafi Brigades. As she bravely told her story, the international media and the world witnessed how she was brutally silenced and abducted by security forces. This kind of state terrorism against the citizens has been characteristic of Gaddafi's 42-year reign in Libya. Eman's bravery gives a voice to the many civilians suffering in Libya now, but unheard from, and this horrific episode demonstrates painfully clearly the necessity and justification of intervention by the United States and the international coalition forces.

We appeal to you to help this courageous woman who has now entered the abyss of Gaddafi's prisons, in which thousands of Libyans have been tortured or killed in cold blood. Please help Eman before it is too late. We urge you to recognize her bravery publicly by calling for her immediate, unconditional release and safe passage out of Tripoli to her chosen safe destination.

Your voice is urgently needed for saving Eman and thereby empowering all Libyan civilians threatened by a tyrant who has openly declared war against them.
