Save Gwinnett's Community Libraries

Target:
Gwinnett County Commisioners & Gwinnet County Library Board

To the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners & Gwinnett County Library Board of Trustees:

We, the undersigned citizens of Gwinnett County, GA, hereby wish to make known our outrage with the Gwinnett Library Board's September 22, 2009 decision to move away from the community based library system .

We are adamantly opposed to the decision to move toward a regional / central library system that includes turning the current libraries in Dacula, Snellville and Lilburn into computer labs.

We call on our Gwinnett County Library Board to take the following actions:

1) Restore full library service to all 15 libraries in Gwinnett County, preserving the community based library system.

2) We call for a vote of No Confidence in Nancy Stanbery-Kellam, the Executive Director of Gwinnett Public Library, and we call for her removal as Executive Director for her reckless actions:

1) In her desire to close Dacula's Library. 2) For changing the Gwinnett library system from community to a regional based system without community input. 3) For her disregard for the opinions of the citizens of Gwinnett County.

Should the Gwinnett County Library Board fail to take into account the desires of the people of Gwinnett County, we call on the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners to dissolve the Library Board entirely and replace all current Library Board members.

with nearby schools, and communities, closing any library could be considered nothing more than an attack on the education system through denying students of all levels public access to both books and the internet (which for many educational institutions is almost a requirement to succeed).

I think the libraries are a very important key in our children's success.. My daughters love to go to the library at least twice a week.

I recently relocated within Gwinnett Co.. We chose to stay in Gwinnett for several reasons including the supposed interest of the County Government to make this county the best place to live. This would include great schools, parks and recreation facilities, roads, shopping and of course libraries. I have two small children who are just beginning to read a write. My oldest was so excited when we got our new library, she loves books. Dacula library has given us great opportunity to implement books and the importance of reading into our childrens lives. My family and I are extremely disappointed in the proposed decision to close this or any library. We strongly urge our community and government leaders to listen to the people who put them in office - KEEP OUR LIBRARIES OPEN! Closing libraries is closing opportunities and is not progressive to the positive growth of this county, state or country.

Please think of the people of Dacula - especially the children. Why should they suffer and possibly not be exposed to the joys of reading because a handful of people aren't thinking of the Dacula residents' best interests??

The Dacula library is important to our community. It is a place for students to study and congregate after school. It is a better place for them to be than the mall, which used to be the only free, public indoor place to go. I spent many hours in the library with my daughter when she was a student at Dacula High. Please do not close the library.

My family uses the Lilburn branch which is one of the libraries slated to become a computer lab. This will in no way serve the needs of a senior family member who has no computer skills and is a regular visitor to the library to borrow books to read.

look these libraries are a great convenience to many people closing them is down right foolish alot of people would be getting into all kinds of bad things if it werent for books reading like many things are good things that expand the mind so please don't turn the libraries into just computer labs

My family has been using Gwinnett's library system for many years. This is a weekly activity for me, my wife, my two children and my father in law. The library and parks are something my family and many of our friend's families cherish and appreciate having in our community. We STRONGLY request that you rethink your decision to close the Dacula branch as it has been such a benefit and joy to have in all of our lives. Thank you - Turner Jenkins

All the libraries are way overstaffed. Shift one or two staff from each of the existing libraries and open Hamilton Mill without closing ANY library. To let a multimillion dollar facility sit idle because the Administration can't solve a very simple staffing problem is ABSURD.

Dear Sirs: Our family waited for years for the arrival of the new and convenient location of the Dacula Library. I would hope that you would take all measures necessary to preserve what is already established. I've said for years that the Gwinnett Co. Libraries and parks are two of the few tax expenditures that are remotely reasonable & compensatory.

My family and I love Dacula library, it's close by. Thats a plus for my mom who had a stroke and can't go very far from the house. I will NOT go to the library they are saying will take over the load. I can not go that far, I love books but that is just way to far.

The library offers so many avenues of educational benefits for the people of Dacula. Please leave the opportunities there to be discovered by all the young people who need it.

Please do not tear down the libraries. High schoolers and middle schoolers go there after school. When they need to munch on something they use the snack machine. They just hang out there for fun. When they dont have a place to go they come there with their friends. Don't do this think again.

Keep all the libraries open! Let's reduce hours so everyone can use their local libraries.

Please listen to the public outcry, board members! Gwinnett is a large county and we should make public libraries accessible to as many members of the public (who, by the way, fund the library) as possible. It's completely feasible to tighten our belts and reduce hours during these difficult economic times. Let us all have EQUAL access to all library services! A computer lab is not a library. A library is "a place set apart to contain books, periodicals, and other material for reading, viewing, listening, study, or reference, as a room, set of rooms, or building where books may be read or borrowed". That's what we have, and that's what we want to keep. I must say I am very heartened by the public response to this issue - it's nice to know that so many appreciate our libraries and the value of books. Go Gwinnett residents!

I have been going to the library since I begun to walk. The library gives me a chance to travel to many different places. Please do not destroy our local library.

I go into the Buford Library very regularly and it is always full. It would be a great disservice to this community to close the Sugar Hill/Buford library. Many people depend on it for school, work, internet, and recreation. Please consider keeping it open.

I am a student at Gainseville State college and I need a library close by to study in peace and quiet and check out books so I don't have to drive all the way to Gainseville. Please leave the community library where it is!

Dear Board Members, How dare you make a decision to close a BRAND NEW LIBRARY without our say in this matter. My daughter graduated from Dacula High and we have used this branch numerous times over the years. I continue to use it as it is close to my home and it is convenient to me. We could have the last say in this matter come election time: after all you are where you are because you were elected. Failure to be elected next time could remove you from your jobs !! Dont close this branch: it is so good for our community and the schools that surround it !!!

To Whom It May Concern; I have used the Buford library for 28 years, and have always found it to be very busy. I have used the library for all six of my children, the oldest being 26. The Buford library has always been of great service to me and I do not want to see it closed. As is with all of the libraries that are being closed, I believe that it is a disservice to our community to close these important places down! Someone needs to do something, whether it be change the hours or something else, it doesn't matter, they just need to be kept open.
