Haven Acres Cat Sanctuary was established in 2003 by three individuals driven by a strong desire to help the many stray, feral, and unwanted cats in Alachua County. The sanctuary is located in High Springs, Florida, which is about 20 minutes outside of Gainesville, Florida. Since its inception, no cat that has needed help has been turned away.
Cats that live at the sanctuary are kept on a healthy diet (Science Diet) and are provided with safe, secure housing. Along with being spayed/neutered they are also provided with any other medical attention needed. Many of the cats are adoptable and wait for a forever home to come get them. Cats that are less adoptable due to age, temperament, or color have a safe, loving home at the sanctuary for the rest of their lives.
Final hearing, please help -
Friends,
We have a date for the final hearing to determine if we will again receive a special exception permit to continue operating Haven Acres Cat Sanctuary in Alachua County. Please mark your calendars and if there is any way for you to attend, PLEASE DO. The date is Tuesday, May 12, 2009, time is 5:00 PM. The hearing will be held in the Jack Durance Auditorium of the Alachua County Admin Building, located at 12 SE 1st St in Gainesville.
We will have bright yellow tags saying something like " We support Haven Acres" on the table outside the auditorium. Please wear them to show the county commissioners whose side you are on. It is very important that we have as many people there as possible. You can also email the County Commissioners at: bocc@alachuacounty.us
If you would also like to provide written comments to the Staff of Department of Growth Management, you can send them to 10 SW 2nd Ave, Gainesville Florida 32601-6294. We the undersigned, petition to stop the closure of Haven Acres Cat Sanctuary currently located in High Springs Florida. We hear everyday of the animals running the streets abandoned, starving, and dying. But through the efforts of a small group of caring individuals a safe haven had been created for them. We sincerely ask for a chance for the haven to keep helping these cats have a home; we ask for them to have a second chance at life. These animals did not ask to be brought into this world to be abandoned and unloved. All they want is a safe place and a family to belong with. And for those unlucky enough not to find a home else where, know that at least here they can live out their lives. Please do not take away one of the few places they can call home.
Hello, I just wanted to thank everyone for their support. I am hoping that this petition help make a difference to those cats. As you all know, the final hearing was today, Tuesday May 12. After hours of deliberation and after hearing many testimonials and thoughts, the County Commissioners of Alachua had decided to extend the hearing to June 9, 2009. The staff of the county must put together the proper wording of the application to present to the board for voting. They will outline the rules and address what needs to be done by the petioners, Steve and Pennie Lefkowitz, to the sanctuary in order for a special exception is to be granted. It is not yet a final victory for the cats, but it sounds as if they now have a true fighting chance to survive. I will keep everyone updated as I get news. Again thank you everyone for your support.
