Pellew Island

Save Jamaica's Pellew Island

Target:
Minister of Health and the Environment

Also known as Monkey Island, Pellew Island is one of Jamaica%u2019s small, near-shore islands.  Located just off the San San coast near Port Antonio, Pellew Island is an important part of Jamaica%u2019s natural heritage and an iconic image of our northeastern coast.  Originally part of Cold Harbour Estates, it was purchased in 1953 by Baron Heinrich Thyssen as a Valentine%u2019s gift for his fiancée, and has been privately owned ever since.

The island sits at one end of a coral reef, which protects the San San Bay.  It is surrounded by healthy sea grass beds and wonderful swimming areas.  Jamaicans and visitors alike visit the island by boat, laze on the small beach, snorkel at the nearby reef and generally enjoy the gorgeous setting.

The current owner plans to construct four villas on the island.  This is likely to result in significant environmental impact, both during the construction phase and afterwards, as well as the loss of access to the beach.

If you are concerned about this development, which will irretrievably alter one of Jamaica%u2019s most beautiful views, as well as pose risks to the marine environment, please sign our %u201CSave Pellew Island%u201D petition, asking the Minister of Health and the Environment to use Jamaican law to ensure Pellew Island remains in its natural state

The opposite holds true in our case. Our environmental habitat is threatened with destruction by eminent domain for BP OIL COMPANY aka SINCLAIR OIL taxpayer funded vehicular bridge and road. The far reaching uses of eminent domain are mindnumbing. I signed your petition. Please sign our petition: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/petition/780121972

Please don't destroy Monkey Island. Its one of the places I always heard about and meant to visit when I was younger living in Jamaica. I am hoping we will still have this treasure for my children to enjoy in the future!

Monkey Island has none in residence, at least not yet anyway! the natural beauty of San San Bay will be forever destroyed by a few ignorant "Apes".

Too many rich have bought up the shores of JA leaving little shoreline for it's citizens. Also, the preservation of the island's natural resources should be paramount.

This is not what Portie needs - its a beautiful get away spot in Jamaica - the most beautiful actually - and I feel its because it has not be over turned by a jammed packed hot tourist spot - but instead a secluded wander you are happy to come upon and keep a secret. I think adding 4 villas is too much, and takes away from a possible tour experience from the Blue lagoon as a short boat ride. leave it as is! Are there no laws in place to stop this! Its a landmark in a public domain.

We have to nurture nature for our own good.

Can the Government do something to prevent these people from building whatever it is they want to build? I think the word should be out there, things such as these should be highlighted in some form so that more Jamaicans can take a stand against these people who want to build even on the flippin corals...'they need help'

When are we going to realise that it doesn't take long to destroy beautiful beaches and their islands? The degradation WILL occur in our lifetime. Just look at Negril!

With each passing year, we see more and more of Jamaica's beautiful landscape disappear, falling victim to another developer's greed. Do we really HAVE to build on every square inch of earth? If the current owner feels the need for the piece of land to "earn its keep", then he/she should never have bought it. Wouldn't it be great if all of us who sign this petition and anyone else who could afford to, could put our dollars together to buy it back for the Jamaican government? Then it would again belong to "one people".

The whole world already knows that we are in trouble from an ecological/environmental point of view. It is up to governments to heed the call of the general populace and do everything to save what is left of our environment. Let Jamaica show the world that we can do what is necessary to protect our environment in the LONG term. Tourism is essential to Jamaica's economy and everything should be done to save the natural beauty that Jamaica is so famous for, or we will lose that industry as well.
