Charter schools are public schools that provide options to parents and students. They are chartered by the state board of education to serve any student in the state. District public schools serve the vast majority of students, but even in the best schools there will be students whose needs are not met. Charter schools provide a free and public opportunity for all of these children. They are a symbiotic complement to the powerful work that district public schools are already doing.
Currently, charter schools do not receive funding that is sustainable. I call upon all citizens who care about the health of our public education system and therefore our economy, history, culture and our kids to sign this petition and call their legislators to ask them to support House Bill 1639. The New Hampshire Public Charter School Association supports this bill which would provide permanent, sustainable funding to charter schools, without negatively impacting district public schools. The Education Committee of the House will hear this bill on January 29th so your call now is critical. If this bill or other funding is not passed this year, seven out of the ten charter schools will close. This will, effectively, be the end of charter schools as a viable education reform effort. We are a society of citizens engaged for the common good and now is your opportunity to engage.
Sincerely,
Bill Wilmot Head of School Seacoast Charter School

We petition the NH legislature to support charter schools to create a permanent, sustainable funding solution for charter schools for next year.
We signed the "Save New Hampshire Public Charter Schools" petition!

I strongly believe that the education options should exist in New Hampshire and that Charter Schools are a great way to help fit the needs of all children. I completely support all measures that need to be taken to ensure the survival of charter schools in NH.

My family does not currently live in NH, but my two nieces are entering the school system there. I believe that school should be a well rounded experience for children; one that builds character as well as basic skills.

I watch my children trying to provide the best education they can afford for their children. The public school system is in such need of revision and repair and our congressmen and congresswomen don't seem to appreciate the severity of reprocussions from the neglect. The continuous cutting of enrichment programs to challenge the minds of our brightest students, and music, arts and sports programs which stimulate different areas of the brain as well as encouraging children with talents to develope and refine those talents is a tragedy. If charter schools can fill the gaps, then they should be supported. Until someone has the courage and determination to push natioinal reforms for our public schools, parents are left with futility of procuring the best quality of comprehensive education within the family budget.

As a parent, like all parents, I want what is best for my children. This means having choices in education. A choice in good quality education should not be reserved for only those who are wealthy and can afford private school. All children and their families deserve a financially viable choice.

We currently are living in the UK for a year. We have been homeschooling our 10 yr old daughter since 2006 when we were sent to Singapore for 6 months. Not every child learns in the cookie cutter way the public schools are geared towards. While public school worked fine for me growing up- it is not something I see working for many children. Charter schools are paving the way to create opportunities for these children.

I am an Occupational Therapist working in the Franklin School District, preceeded by working for 18 yrs. in Laconia School Dist. I know kids learn differently and some need totally different and special approaches and fewer students in a class - and charter schools can do that. They also depend on more parent involvement and that is always a good thing. On a personal level, I watch my grandaughter, Molly DuBois, thriving at the Seacoast Charter School and she can't wait to have her little sister, Samantha, join her next year. It is VERY IMPORTANT TO SEE THAT THEY ARE FUNDED ADEQUATELY.

As a pediatrician, I have first-hand experience counseling families about their children's educational direction. I truly believe that diversity in educational approach and programming is essential to meeting the educational needs of our population. I strongly support this bill, because it will provide much needed stability to the nascent chartered public school approach in our state.

Our daughter was previously in a Waldorf school (gr. K-8), then switched to the public high school where she held high honors. She would come home every night complaining of how bored she was in her high school, how she had 90 minuet classes, but as it took 45 min. for the kids to settle down, she didn't feel she was learning as much as she could. Now that she's at ASD, she feels she's learning alot. She's excited to get up in the morning and go to school again! This from a 14 year old. We need to keep this, and other charter schools open for the kids that really want to learn. It would be great to see the funding put into the charter school that goes into the public schools. Isn't the goal the same? We need to educate our children so that when it's their turn to run our world, they can do so in a way that improves it for the future, not just a quick fix for today. My daughter was in danger of failing, and possibly dropping out of the traditional high school. She instead attended Great Bay E-learning Charter School. As part of her program she was able to take dual enrollment classes at the community college, where she did very well and increased her confidence. The small school environment and flexible scheduling made all the difference for her. In January she graduated early and began her college education in earnest at a four year institution!

Charter schools are new to my family. I have always appreciated the role of schools in NH and feel charter schools only strengthen the opportunities for New Hampshire's students. It allows choice for those children who don't learn in the cookie cutter environment. As adults have different skills, so do our children. I have two children who are completely different. This choice is a benefit to children who excel in tradtional settings as well as those who excel in the charter school environment. I thank those who have open minds to accomodate both.

I fully support giving families an alternative choice for their children's education. Charter schools provide families with this alternative. We need to increase this funding in NH to give the schools enough resources to educate our children.
