Save Our Aquifer is trying to prevent two sewage wastewater Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) wells in Brevard County Florida. The first one is in Rockledge, Florida and the second is at the Canaveral Port Authority, just north of Cocoa Beach.

The City

Save our Aquifer

Target:
Cites of Rockledge and Port Canaveral
Sponsored by:
Save Our Aquifer, situated at Rockledge, Florida, is organized to protect the Floridan aquifer system and Underground Sources of Drinking Water (USDW), promote awareness, educate the public, elected officials and agency staff, and conduct other such related activities necessary to its mission.
http://saveouraquifer.org

ABOUT: The City of Rockledge plans to seek a cycle testing injection permit from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) to inject 120 -180 million gallons a year of partially treated sewage, 370-470 feet below, directly into the Floridan aquifer under the guise of "Aquifer Storage and Recovery" (ASR). In preparation for this injection permit, the City initiated a ban on all potable water wells within a 1-mile radius of the Rockledge Sewage Treatment Facility located at 1700 Jack Oats Blvd. The ban affects more than 2100 residential homes. The ASR well threatens to contaminate local wells and the Indian River Lagoon, an Estuary of National Significance.

Re: For the record - Major Permit Modification to the Canaveral Port Authority (CPA) Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) wells, DEP Permit No. 05-0200428-001-UIC, DEP Permit# 05-0195980-002-UIC, FDEP Wastewater FL0021571, SJRWMD Injection Well Permit #105846.

I hereby express my opposition to the FDEP cycle testing permits that would allow Canaveral Port Authority to annually inject 150 million gallons of non-potable, partially treated sewage water, from the City of Cape Canaveral Wastewater Treatment Plant, 35 - 60 feet below land surface, entirely within the Underground Source of Drinking Water (USDW). The lithology of the site consists of beach ridges and dunes. The "storage" zone in the region consists of unconsolidated sand, silt, and clay.

I also express opposition to the FDEP cycle testing permit that would allow the City of Rockledge to annually inject 180 million gallons of non-potable, partially treated sewage from their Sewage Wastewater Treatment Plant 370-470 feet below land surface, directly into the Underground Source of Drinking Water (USDW).

If permitted, these ASR wells would forever contaminate the aquifer--the Underground Source of Drinking Water--and cause groundwater changes that would result in direct, indirect and cumulative adverse impacts to people, to marine species in the Indian River lagoon, and to the Atlantic Ocean. Examples of contaminants that would be present in the partially treated sewage water include: antibiotics, birth control and other related pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors; heavy metals, PCBs and other industrial and urban chemicals; known carcinogens and other components that negatively affect humans and other living organisms.

In summary, we oppose injection of partially treated sewage ASR wells in Rockledge and Cape Canaveral due to the following:

* We should not be disposing of partially treated sewage into the Underground Source of Drinking Water

* Endangers adjacent ecosystems because of migrating pollutants

* Not beneficial for the public, but enables the State to justify continued uncontrolled growth

* Uses experimental technology in a gamble to conserve drinking water for future growth

* Eliminates use of a local drinking water resource for the purpose of watering lawns

* Economically risky

Respectfully,

Supporters of Save Our Aquifer in Brevard County Florida and across the globe.

I'm sure you have heard many pros and cons regarding this project. Of all the things we have to do, this is nowhere near the top of the list. Please remember, this is Pandora's Box. If only 1% of your being says something could go wrong, please do not vote for this project.

Are you nuts?!? Bubbles like these engineers are talking about only take place at extreme depths. You're not going to get a well that deep with the current technology. "Pipe dream" sums it up well.

Water is one of our most important and precious natural resources and we need to preserve and protect it in any way that we can.

We actually live very near this area. While we are not directly affected by the ban on water wells, it seems unfortunate that we would voluntarily pollute potable water sources when this is arguably our most valuable resource.

As a native resident of Brevard County I am perturbed at the idea of any local government injecting sewage that hasn't been fully treated into, or anywhere near, the local aquifer system. There are already more than enough problems meeting Florida's long term water requirements without taking such risky moves that could endanger the health of people all over the county.

Isn't it bad enough to try to get by these days, without worrying about our local government sabotaging our health and environment?

This is a very bad idea. The future of our water supply is already questionable.

I own 2 homes in Rockledge and I think this idea of storing treated water in a well is a bad one. Please don't do it!!!!!

Although I do not live in Rockledge, the aquifer will be affected in Melbourne too. Why not save storm water for future use on lawns, or encourage conservation and xeroscaping

I have long been a resident of the Indian River Lagoon, the water quality is already bad, from ordinary pollutants. No more crabs, no clams, few fish, where there used be many. This Lagoon must be saved, not killed with a system we can control and say NO to. Please help this Lagoon don't kill it. Our economy and livelyhood depend on it.

Is Merritt Island next? Pollution, waste, pesticides and nitrogen rich fertilizers all are killing our wildlife and water ways. Obviously exposing us to the same potential fate as well. This injection method will only hasten and exasperate the disaster. Lowes in Rockledge sold near $45,000 in fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides in one weekend. Think about that. It goes beyond injecting sewage into our aquifer, we must stop our bad habits as well.

Pumping partially treated sewage underground into the Florida Aquifer is simply insane. And, given our extremely delicate ecosystem and the structure of the aquifer (which the majority of Palm Bay must depend on for potable water because of our lack of utilities here) makes it very possible that pumping sewage into the ground in Rockledge will poison people in Palm Bay (as well as other areas of the county of course). Please oppose this extraordinarily stupid action.

I thought this was settled in the Florida legislature a few years ago. Why are they STILL trying to poison our drinking water? It needs to be treated to the point where it is safe to release into natural water bodies, not dumped underground and out of mind.

This is a worthy cause, please get your friends and family to sign! Another worthy cause :- The Venus Project is an Organisation that proposes a feasable plan of action for social change; one that works towards a peacful and sustainable global civilization. It outlines to strive toward where human rights are not only paper proclaimations but also a way of life. A world whe Mother Nature and Technology work together, not as two opposing forces. Where Resources and Science are choices over Profit and Power. Please look up the website http://www.thevenusproject.com/ and sign the petition. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/The-future-that-Humanity-Deserves

I think that putting the "treated water" into a well will get into the aquifer. I do not feel that trying to save water in this manner to irrigate lawns in the future is not worth contaminating the water supplies for the future.
