SAVE OUR BREAST CANCER SURGERY WARD

LEEDS TEACHING HOSPITALS TRUST ARE AIMING TO CLOSE THIS WARD DOWN LATER THIS YEAR.  OVER 1 MILLION POUNDS WAS SPENT ON THIS UNIT WHICH WAS ONLY OFFICIALLY OPENED BY RONAN KEATING IN 2009 AT A LARGE UNVEILING CEREMONY.

THOUSANDS OF POUNDS HAVE BEEN INVESTED IN TRAINING A TEAM OF DEDICATED STAFF TO NURSE AND TREAT BREAST CANCER PATIENTS, WHO NEED SPECIAL CARE.  BREAST CANCER IS A TERRIBLE DISEASE; NOT ONLY DO PATIENTS NEED TO UNDERGO TRAUMATIC SURGERY SUCH AS MASTECTOMY  LEAVING THEM FEELING VERY EMOTIONALLY INSECURE, THEY ALSO HAVE TO FACE A HOST OF TREATMENT REGIMES SUCH AS CHEMOTHERAPY, RADIOTHERAPY, ENDOCRINE TREATMENT ALONG WITH YEARS OF UNCERTAINTY.  STAFF IN WARD 75 ARE TRAINED TO HELP WOMEN FACE THESE PROBLEMS.  THEY ARE TRAINED TO ENCOURAGE PATIENTS FOLLOWING SURGERY.

MANY YEARS OF FUNDRAISING HAS BEEN UNDERTAKEN BY MANY WOMEN - MOST WHO HAVE HAD BREAST CANCER THEMSELVES.  PLEASE DO NOT SIT BACK AND LET THIS BE A STATISTIC OF OUR GOVERNMENT'S MAKING.
We the undersigned wish to pledge our support for the Breast Cancer Surgery Unit at Leeds General Infirmary.  The Unit  has been in operation for many years however only recently officially opened in 2009 at a cost of over 1 million pounds.  The Breast Unit has a team of dedicated staff and doctors who are specialised in helping ladies overcome the trauma of breast surgery and the future treatment regimes that ensues following surgery.  We believe that it is a big mistake to close down Leeds' only dedicated breast surgery unit.  We feel that the time and devotion expended by staff and volunteer fund raisers over the years should not be dismissed.

This Unit has helped 1,000's of women.  Please listen to our plea.

Yours faithfully
