Save Piping Plover Habitat at Whitefish Point

Dear Secretary of Interior,

We the undersigned respectfully request that you please intervene to protect Whitefish Point.  The Whitefish Point Unit of the Seney National Wildlife Refuge is a designated Globally Important Bird Area.  Whitefish Point is a primary nesting area for endangered Piping Plovers in the Great Lakes region.  For the first time in more than two decades, Piping Plovers successfully fledged chicks at Whitefish Point in the years 2009 and 2010 but only because intense measures were used to protect them.

The Whitefish Point Light Station is the site of the oldest active on light on Lake Superior and it is on the National Register of Historic Places.  The overuse, commercialization, and ongoing development plans of the patent holder of the light station property has threatened the unique ecology and history of Whitefish Point.  Please take action to preserve Whitefish Point for future generations by transferring the light station property to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.
