Verdant Kodagu at the mercy of smugglers, poachers.

Target:
Karnataka State Government & Indian Central Government
Sponsored by:

The State government's unique transfer policy has made Kodagu district's pristine forests highly vulnerable to the threat from timber smugglers and poachers. Thanks to the State govt's unique transfer policy of five sincere forest officers.

Global warming/wild life/ environment/forests are not just a joke to talk and shrug off as most of our politicos are doing.

What's happening? - Tree felling and construction of roads in Pushpagiri wildlife sanctuary in Kodagu district. Pushpagiri wildlife sanctuary is located in the northern part of Kodagu. It is home to rare and endangered birdlife and is designated as one of the important bird areas of the world. The rich Kadamakkal reserve forest is a part of the sanctuary. Pushpagiri is the highest peak in it. Kumaraparvatha is the other peak that lies within.

The sancutuary has been proposed as a World Heritage site. I urge each and everyone to sign this petition in hope to see if this can make some positive change.

Dear Sir,

Climate change is already altering the world's rich natural heritage and threatening countless species, including sea birds, butterflies, sea turtles, wild cats, fish, and scores of trees across the landscape. More destruction of our natural resources like the forests is un-acceptable.

If we don't act now to dramatically reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, thousands of species across the world are doomed.

We urge you to support an economy-wide support in saving our forests and wildlife by taking necessary action to stop the Road being build inside the Pushpagiri wildlife sanctuary in Kodagu district.

I'm not sure why there is a need to explain that nature itself is important; we live in it and we do not go about destroying our own homes do we !!! I hope the government and the people wake up.

it's a shame that the transfer of honest officials has been affected for the profits that are by themselves being made by causing destruction of nature. The State govt should take serious notice of this as its for the first time that it has come into power in the south.

What a sad state that we have to actually 'write' why we think saving forests and wildlife is important!

It is amazing that the Government which is unable to maintain the existing 'so called' National Highways (the condition of the Bangalore - Hassan - Mangalore NH over the Charmadi and Shiradi ghats is pahtetic and un-motorable !)is so keen to build roads within Reserve Forests by breaking the law of the land ! As it is the roads in Coorg get messed up because lots of heavy traffic use the Coorg route (as an alternative to the NH mentioined earlier), and the Coorg roads are not built take these kinds of loads. Why the unholy hurry to build new roads even at the cost of breaking the law while the existing roads are crumbling ? Should not the Government respect its own country's laws ??

Wildlife/Forest go together. We, the people around them, the government selected by us have obligations to protect them, not only by not killing wildlife or deforesting, also by protecting them by outside poachers, timber merchants and granite haulers. We need to protect them for ecological reasons, also for our own future generations. Let them not look these natural creations on the picture. Let us live with them and our children live with them and enjoy living together.

My Grandfather (Late Kumbera Somaiah) who was one of the earliest DFOs of Kodagu and the author of the original working plan for Kodagu, would have been really upset to see this day. Its the apathy of politicians and keepers of the law which is leading to such atrocity. There are some active environmental protection groups in Kodagu which are taking up the fight and must be encouraged to do so.
