ANYONE WHO SUPPORTS THE LONG LIFE OF RAZA STUDIES IN ALL SCHOOLS

The Appropriations Committee of the Arizona House of Representatives has approved provisions to a "Homeland Security" measure that would essentially destroy the Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (MEChA) and Mexican-American study programs in the state's public schools and universities. The anti-Mexican provisions to SB1108 would withhold funding to schools whose courses "denigrate American values and the teachings of European based civilization." One section of SB1108 would bar public schools, colleges and universities from allowing organizations to operate on campus if it is "based in wHole or part in race-based criteria," a provision Rep. Russell Pearce said is aimed at MEChA.In addition, SB1108 mandates the State Superintendent of Public Instruction to confiscate books and teaching materials that are deemed anti-American.

We the undersigned support Tucson Unified School District's Ethnic
Studies Program and Mexican American/ RAZA Studies Department. We
believe in educational programs that embrace and respect the rich
racial and ethnic diversity of the United States. We are opposed to
the proposed Arizona State Bill AB 1108, and similar legislation,
that would deny the democratic right to learn about different racial
groups and alternative perspectives in American society.

The men and women of the Chicano Movement, and even the Chicanos and Chicanas before them fought long and hard to obtain these very important types of curriculums for our youth. We must fight as hard as we can to see that these racists and hateful people do not take them away!

These classes are nothing more than a way of preparing minorities for a more promising future. I had A Chicano Studies/Social Justice class my senior year of High School, and it definetly made me a more educated, aware and mature person. Not only do you get involve with community projects that could change the racists stereotypes placed on Latinos, but you also learn the real history of our ancestors and culture. They are classes that help enrich minorities, help them see things in different ways, not make them racist against anyone else of color.

I think it is very important that these programs stay in active with the schools, because as a Mexican and a descendant of the indigenous people it is very important that our culture and history does not get erased or forgotten. This is our identity and along the way this culture and history tends to be forgotten with present generations, so this is why we neeed to keep these programs.

I feel the need to back the importance of Raza Studies in all schools. I especially feel it is vital to maintain these opportunities for discussion. An excerpt from the bill say: "Public tax dollars should not be used to promote political, religious, ideological or cultural beliefs or values as truth when such values are in conflict with the values of American citizenship and the teachings of western civilization" However who can declare that these studies conflict with the values of American citizenship when diversity and freedom of though and expression are clearly stated in our first amendment of the Constitution.

Ethnic studies I think that my participation in this project is unbelievable. In my opinion every young adult should have a class where they are thought their history. Instead of learning the same history they were thought since elementary. In my high school we have 4 classes of Mexican American Studies. (MAS1A, MAS1B, MAS2A, MAS2B) These classes teach since the beginning of our history. Well what wasn’t destroyed! I really enjoyed having Ethnic studies in my school. My ethnic studies teacher Mr. Perales opened all of our (students) eyes, by not only teaching us our history but, by informing us how real life is, and that is not all “ PINK”. He also thought us about current problems for example, capitalism, racism, etc. I got involved in SJEP (Social Justice Education Project) because a member form this organization, Grecia Ramirez co tough with Mr. Perales on Monday’s and Tuesday’s. She would explain to us how SJEP works and what they were doing to make a positive difference in the community. For example, they made changes in other High Schools by making them a better place for students. So Mr. Perales wanted to make a positive change in our school, by making it “GREEN”. We conducted research about Sustainability.

Ethnic Studies is a semantic term which simply describes the history of a people and their contributions, like any other history or area studies class. Because the study of Mexican Americans is usually glossed over or eliminated from traditional history books (sometimes for space reasons, other times for political reasons), there is a need for a discipline that dedicates itself to the study of smaller cultural history. Is the study of European, Asian, and other regions or groups, race or ethnicity based? Or how about American Indian Studies? Is that race-based and slotted for elimination? If all race and ethnicity based area studies are eliminated, where in the University would one study the history, anthropology, and contributions of American Indians, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, or African Americans? This bill is a preposterous politically based way of controlling access to information about an important American group, like Mexican Americans, and is very Orwellian in its approach to burying truths.

I was a member of the first students of color admitted after the struggle for Ethnic Studies at SF State in 1969. Without the support of ethnic studies I think that I would not have had the opportunity to recieve and education at an institution for higher learning. It was Ethnic Studies that taught me my history and gave me back the pride and dignity that had been stripped from previous racist educational system. It is outrageous that in the name of homeland security they would strip a peoples history and culture.

SB 1108 is a bluntly racist bill. The greatest thing about this country is all of the rich cultures that are respresented. As a result of Raza Studies, I have gone from the "ghettos" and being apathetic about the world around me to becoming a productive memeber of this society. I am now receiving a master's degree in higher education and thank those that gave me the opportunity to learn about myself and my culture. Without knowledge of my culture, I would never have the confidence to do what I am doing today!
