The School of Biological and Chemical Sciences (SBCS) at Queen Mary, University of London is under grave threat from a massive and poorly-thought-out management restructuring. The proposals risk sacking nearly a third of the School's academic staff, destroying the ethos of the School, collapsing the teaching programme, and undermining research.

We, the undersigned, have no confidence in these proposals. Rather, we believe they will do immense damage to the School.

We urge you to:

• abandon your plans;
  
• pursue instead the alternative proposals being drawn up by the School staff and the University and College Union, which will save academic jobs, boost research output, and safeguard teaching standards at Queen Mary;
• pledge not to undertake future restructurings involving redundancies but instead work with staff in a collegial way to ensure that the College continues to improve but core academic values and the careers of long-serving and loyal staff are not needlessly sacrificed.
