Save Tackapusha Museum

As we all know too well, politicians are looking for places to cut spending as a result of the ongoing financial crisis. Most recently, they are looking to cut spending on Long Island museums by closing them. The first museum they are planning to close is one in many of our backyards, Tackapusha preserve. I remember going to this museum as a child with my Grandmother and I know, recently, our friend Mike Morgan has been doing extensive work with the park to help fix it up and get it running again. The solution is simple, our representatives want to cut spending and close this museum because they feel that it is no longer making any money – which could so easily not be the case. This park simply needs exposure. Posters in the public libraries reminding parents it is a very cheap option ($2 for adults and $1 for children under the age of 4) for a Saturday afternoon. There is also a great educational opportunity in the form of a school trip for the many elementary schools in Massapequa, Seaford and many of the surrounding towns.

Finally, our politicians tell us that they plan to cut museums not making enough revenue, but where will the closing of museums and parks stop? Who’s to say that they won’t close the Eisenhower Park swimming pool, or the Marjorie Post ice skating rink next? We cannot let our representatives destroy the vague remainder of culture long island has, when I am certain there are many other places that have excess funds during these times.

We the undersigned, are writing to express our disapproval with the counties’ proposal to close Tackapusha preserve’s museum. It is a great place for families and though perhaps it has not been making enough money recently, we must also remember that the simple solution to this is exposure – if no one knows about this wonderful museum, no one is going to go. It is important to keep such a museum open because in today’s world, we need to be educating our youth on the environment and our wildlife. Closing such a museum would only be an indication at the counties’ disrespect of important issues in the environment and otherwise. In closing this museum we are hurting the education opportunities of our youth and hurting the town by giving it one less place for families to go on a Saturday afternoon.
